Nagasaki University
Nagasaki University, written in Japanese as 長崎大学 and romanised as Nagasaki daigaku with the short form Chōdai, is a national university of Japan whose main Bunkyo Campus lies in the Bunkyo-machi quarter of Nagasaki city, the historic capital of Nagasaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu.
It was created in 1949 by merging six predecessor institutions, above all Nagasaki Medical College, whose origin in a Tokugawa medical training institute of November 1857 makes it one of the very oldest roots of Western-style, rather than herbal, medicine anywhere in Japan.
Its School of Medicine, Institute of Tropical Medicine and Atomic Bomb Disease Institute give it a global profile in medicine, tropical and infectious-disease research and radiation biology, since its medical college stood only a few hundred metres from the 1945 atomic-bomb hypocenter.
