Molecular Omics
Molecular Omics is a peer-reviewed journal for research that applies genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics to chemical and biological problems, with an emphasis on mechanistic insight into biological processes.《分子组学》是一份同行评审期刊,刊登以基因组学,转录组学,蛋白质组学,代谢组学等手段解答化学与生物学问题的研究,重心放在对生物过程的机制性解释上。
Launched in 2018 by the Royal Society of Chemistry as the successor to Molecular BioSystems, it moved to Oxford University Press in January 2026 without changing its title or electronic ISSN.
Scope
- The stated remit is wide, since any scientific work built on the application of an omics technology falls inside it, and combinations of several omics platforms are actively encouraged.
- Mechanistic work forms one pillar, covering studies that use omics data to explain how a drug acts, or why a genotype produces a phenotype such as drought tolerance in crops.
- Clinical translation is the second strand, and omics studies aimed at diagnosis receive a hearing when the findings carry independent validation, including candidate biomarkers and new drug targets for development.
- A third strand looks inside the cell, taking in subcellular localisation of proteins, post-translational modifications, and imaging techniques that resolve molecular composition at a scale finer than bulk tissue analysis allows.
- Methodological papers are equally welcome, whether they present spectroscopic or chromatographic techniques, chip-based and array formats, or new ways of classifying and analysing large datasets.
- Genomics and transcriptomics supply much of the sequence-level evidence, from variant discovery to expression profiling across tissues, treatments and developmental stages, and both are treated as core inputs.
- Proteomics and metabolomics contribute the mass-spectrometry side of the field, where quantification of peptides and small molecules carries the argument about what a cell actually does at a given moment.
- Specialised branches such as glycomics and lipidomics are named explicitly in the aims, which keeps carbohydrate and lipid profiling inside the main scope rather than at its edge.
- Innovative bioinformatics is treated as part of the science rather than a service add-on, and papers that build analysis pipelines or statistical models for omics data are reviewed on their own merits.
- Multi-omics integration sits at the centre of the project, since the journal asks for work that joins several platforms to answer a question no single dataset could settle on its own.
- The editors set a high bar for significance, and results that could be predicted routinely from earlier work, or that matter only to specialists in a narrow corner of the field, are turned away.
- Because the readership spans chemistry, biology and computation, a paper is expected to explain its biological question and its computational choices in language the neighbouring discipline can follow.
- Reviews and shorter communications sit alongside full research papers, giving authors room either to summarise a fast-moving area or to report a result that needs rapid circulation among specialists.
History
- The title has a lineage, since the Royal Society of Chemistry launched Molecular BioSystems in 2005 as a forum for chemical biology and systems-level thinking about biological molecules.
- Thirteen volumes appeared under that name, and the 2018 relaunch as Molecular Omics began at volume 14, so the numbering runs unbroken across the change of title.
- Volume 14 carried six issues through 2018, a bimonthly rhythm the journal kept for its first four volumes, up to volume 17 in 2021, when issues still appeared two months apart.
- Indexing followed quickly, with MEDLINE and PubMed covering the journal from volume 14, issue 1, which gave the new title a place in biomedical searching from its first year.
- The relaunch tracked a shift in the field itself, because sequencing and mass spectrometry had made large-scale measurement routine in chemistry departments, and a journal devoted to that work made sense.
- From 2022 the schedule changed, with volume 18 running to ten issues, and volumes 19 and 20 in 2023 and 2024 following the same ten-issue pattern year after year.2022 年起刊期变了,第 18 卷扩到 10 期,2023 年的第 19 卷与 2024 年的第 20 卷延续了这一节奏。
- In 2025 that expansion was reversed, and volume 21 returned to six issues, the count volume 22 has carried into 2026 under the new publisher so far.2025 年这次扩版被收回,第 21 卷回到 6 期,2026 年第 22 卷在新出版方手里仍按这个数目出刊。
- Ownership of the imprint moved in 2026, and the National Library of Medicine now records the publisher as Oxford University Press, with Oxford as the place of publication from that year.
- The Royal Society of Chemistry announced the transfer for January 2026 and kept the journal's own page live, pointing readers from there to its new home at the university press.
- No renaming came with the move, and the electronic ISSN stayed as it was, so citations, links and repository records of papers already published under the old imprint survived intact.
- The impact factor has slid since the mid-2020s, from 4.212 for 2022 and 3.0 for 2023 to 2.4 in both 2024 and 2025, with a five-year figure of 3.0.
- By the 2025 Journal Citation Reports the journal had accumulated 1,131 citations and published 37 articles that year, a small output that keeps the title selective rather than volume-driven.
- Access has stayed hybrid, since most papers sit behind a subscription while authors who pay an article processing charge can make theirs open, and about 27 percent of 2025 content did so.
- The same reports place the journal in the third quartile of biochemistry and molecular biology, ranked 244th of 328 titles in that category on the Journal Impact Factor.2025 年的期刊引证报告把该刊放在生化与分子生物学类别的第三四分位,影响因子排名为该类 328 种期刊中的第 244 位。
- Beyond the biomedical indexes, Scopus and the Web of Science core collection both list the title, which widens the pool of departments willing to count its papers as output.
Editors
- Robert Moritz of the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle holds the editor-in-chief post, and his own work centres on mass-spectrometry proteomics and targeted protein measurement in complex samples.
- He builds assays that let a laboratory measure a specific protein across many samples, an interest that matches the journal's taste for methods whose usefulness has been demonstrated in practice.
- Day-to-day handling is shared with associate editors, each covering a slice of the field, and with an international editorial board whose members referee papers and advise on policy.
- Every submission is read by an editor before review, and papers outside the remit, or too preliminary to survive refereeing, are returned quickly to save authors time.
- At least two independent referees normally assess each paper, their identities are withheld from authors, and the reports reach the author in full alongside the editor's decision letter.
- Revisions stay with the same editor, who judges whether the referees' points have been met, and an author who disagrees with the outcome can appeal the decision in writing.
- Review articles are often discussed with the editorial office before writing begins, which keeps commissioned coverage from overlapping with material already in press or under review elsewhere.
- Ethics and data policies follow the publisher's framework, so authorship contributions must be stated, competing interests declared, and omics datasets deposited in public repositories wherever a suitable one exists.
- Corrections and retractions carry a DOI of their own and are linked to the original paper, so the published record stays readable years after a claim has been revised.
- Board members come from universities and research institutes across several continents, a spread that helps the editors find referees outside an author's own circle and language community.
- Correspondence with the journal runs through the publisher's submission system, and the editorial office answers scope queries before a manuscript is formally submitted, which saves a full round of review.
- Statistical reporting gets attention at review, and papers that rely on machine learning are expected to describe training data, validation and the risk of overfitting in terms a biologist can judge.
- One editor signs each decision, and where referees disagree that editor weighs the arguments instead of counting votes, which keeps borderline methodological papers from failing by default.
