Molecular Imaging and Biology
Molecular Imaging and Biology (commonly abbreviated as ''Mol. Imaging Biol.', previously titled Clinical Positron Imaging) is the official journal of the World Molecular Imaging Society, published in partnership with the European Society for Molecular Imaging and the Federation of Asian Societies for Molecular Imaging. Founded in 1999, it publishes original research that uses molecular imaging to understand biology and medicine, with a 2025 impact factor of 2.5.Molecular Imaging and Biology(常用缩写 Mol. [1]
Scope
- Disciplinary focus: the journal concentrates on the use of molecular imaging to understand biology and medicine, and presents original research on delineating and treating disease through imaging technologies.
- Technical range: it covers radiolabelling and contrast agents, positron emission tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, optical imaging, ultrasound and intraoperative guidance, treating preclinical and first-in-human studies alike.
- Audience: it addresses clinicians and researchers in nuclear medicine, radiology, oncology and biomedical engineering, with the stated aim of placing imaging at the service of precision medicine.
- Article types and speed: alongside research papers and reviews it runs commentaries, guides and collections. The journal reports an average of about thirty days to a first decision and places fifteenth in the Google Scholar H-5 index for nuclear medicine and radiotherapy.
- Open access: the journal is hybrid, offering authors a paid immediate open-access option beyond subscription, and several hundred of its articles are already freely available as open access.
- Society network: alongside the founding society, the European and Asian molecular imaging societies are publishing partners, and papers from their congresses, award selections and meeting coverage are a standing part of the journal.
History
- 1999: the journal was founded, initially centred on clinical positron emission imaging and for a time carried the title Clinical Positron Imaging.1999年: 期刊创刊,早期以临床正离子发射断层成像为重心,刊名一度为 Clinical Positron Imaging。
- Renaming and broadening: after taking its present name the journal extended its remit from the clinic into biology and basic research and became the official publication of the World Molecular Imaging Society, its influence growing as molecular imaging developed out of radiopharmacology.
- Change of editor: Jason S. Lewis took over as editor-in-chief in 2020 and served until 2023, after which H. Charles Manning assumed the post in 2024 and wrote the published account of the handover.
- Present editor: Kimberly A. Kelly of the University of Virginia became editor-in-chief in September 2024, her research record and editorial vision praised at the time by the society's chief executive.
- Editorial reform: at the handover the board was reorganised into tiers such as consulting and senior editors, a mentored review system involving trainees was introduced, and the annual awards for best clinical paper, best preclinical paper and image of the year were continued. [2]
