Management of Biological Invasions
Management of Biological Invasions is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal devoted to applied research on alien species and their management in fresh waters, seas and terrestrial habitats, published in Helsinki by the Regional Euro-Asian Biological Invasions Centre since 2010 and issued four times a year, with a 2025 Journal Impact Factor of 1.9.《生物入侵管理》是一份开放获取的同行评议期刊,专注外来物种及其治理的应用研究,涵盖淡水,海洋与陆地各类生境,2010 年创刊,每年出版四期,稿件来自世界各地。
Scope
- The aims statement calls the management of invasions a crisis science, and the journal sets out to supply insight into the problems, to document new methods of detection, measurement and analysis, and to record workable solutions.
- Bridging the gap between research and the use of science in decision-making, regulation and management is named as the central purpose, a framing that has held since the first volume.
- Advances in the management of aquatic and terrestrial invasive alien species form the first listed area, taking in control programmes, restoration after removal and the practical lessons of long-running campaigns.
- Early detection and monitoring, including environmental DNA surveys, receive explicit mention, reflecting a shift towards methods that find species before populations become conspicuous and costly to remove.
- Work on policy and regulation is welcomed, with papers that compare national legal instruments, trace how rules are enforced at borders, or weigh international commitments against domestic practice.
- Control and eradication are treated as one theme that runs from mechanical removal and chemical treatment to classical and inundative biological control, with post-release monitoring expected in every case.
- The effect of invasions on native assemblages sits alongside conservation policy, so studies of competition, hybridisation and habitat change appear next to assessments of protected areas and threatened species lists.
- Human-mediated pathways and vectors of introduction are examined for both realms, covering horticulture, shipping, aquaculture, the pet trade and the leisure activities that move organisms between catchments.
- Ballast water research and management, together with biofouling on hulls and structures, hold a standing place, since both are governed by international conventions with measurable compliance obligations.
- Bioaccumulation in invasive species is listed as a topic of its own, a reminder that introduced organisms also alter contaminant pathways and can change the exposure of predators and people.
- Early warning, rapid response and horizon scanning are grouped together, a sequence that assumes watch lists, agreed trigger points and standing capacity rather than improvisation after a sighting.
- Socio-economic and cultural impacts, risk perception and behavioural intent bring social science into the pages, with survey work on how gardeners, anglers and boaters judge the risks they carry.
- Ecological risk assessment supplies a methodological spine, with scoring schemes, trait-based screening and predictive models used to rank species before they arrive or spread further.
- Indicators for invasions, information systems and biosecurity frameworks close the list, including databases that pool records across borders and case studies of management in action.
- Education, outreach and citizen science appear as legitimate subjects, and the journal also carries viewpoint papers, technical reports on new management technologies and the proceedings of relevant international meetings.
History
- The journal was established in 2010 by Elías D. Dana, then working at the Estación Experimental de Zonas Áridas in Almería, as an outlet for management-oriented invasion research that older titles covered only in passing.
- Volume 1 carried a single issue in 2010, volume 2 one issue in 2011 and volume 3 two issues in 2012, after which the fourth volume settled the rhythm at four issues a year.
- Publication is handled by the Regional Euro-Asian Biological Invasions Centre, an independent body registered at PL 6, 00981 Helsinki, Finland, which also runs the sister title Aquatic Invasions.
- Articles are registered with Crossref under the prefix 10.3391/mbi, and the e-ISSN 1989-8649 covers the online edition, which is the only edition the journal produces.
- Dana edited the journal from 2010 to 2012, Marnie Campbell then served as co-editor-in-chief from 2013 to 2021, and Sarah Bailey held the same title from 2018 to 2024.(Elías D. Dana)主持编务到 2012 年,(Marnie Campbell)自 2013 年起担任共同主编至 2021 年,(Sarah Bailey)在 2018 年到 2024 年间任同一职务。
- Open access has been the model from the outset, with authors keeping copyright and licensing their work under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0, so no subscription wall has ever stood between readers and the archive.
- The model is financed by author page charges of 75 euros per printed page, with a floor of 1,200 euros for papers shorter than sixteen pages, and the editors state that outside support is sought for students and authors in low-income countries.
- The journal is an official publication of the International Association for Open Knowledge on Invasive Alien Species, known as INVASIVESNET, a body that links invasion scientists, managers and information systems across regions.
- Coverage by Science Citation Index Expanded came with entries in Current Contents, Zoological Record and BIOSIS Previews, and the title is also indexed in Scopus, CAB Abstracts, EBSCO and DOAJ.
- The Journal Impact Factor moved from 2.663 in 2021 to 2.282 in 2022, fell to 1.5 in 2023 and 1.2 in 2024, then recovered to 1.9 in 2025, when the title ranked 39th of 77 in biodiversity conservation.
- Recent volumes publish roughly 57 research items a year, the title has drawn about 1,115 citations in all, and a cited half-life of 6.1 years points to continued use of papers long after publication.
- Special issues carry the proceedings of the International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species and the International Conference on Marine Bioinvasions, with guest editors drawn from the host institutions of those meetings.
- A data policy asks authors to deposit geo-referenced species records in the centre's information system or in EASIN, to lodge sequences in GenBank, and to publish datasets as supplementary files without charge or size limit.
- Between 2025 and 2027 the journal receives partial support from GuardIAS, a Horizon Europe project on invasive alien species in European waters, and volume 17 was running in 2026.2025 年至 2027 年间,刊物获得 GuardIAS 项目的部分资助,这是欧盟地平线计划下针对欧洲水域入侵物种的研究项目,2026 年出到第 17 卷,每年仍为四期。
Editors
- Catherine Jarnevich of the U.S. Geological Survey, based at the Fort Collins Science Center in Colorado, is editor in chief, working with a managing editor and a large board rather than running the title alone.
- Two thematic deputy editors cover marine and coastal waters, Linda Ann Auker of Misericordia University and Katherine Dafforn of the University of New South Wales, so hull, port and estuary submissions reach a specialist desk.
- Calum MacNeil of the Cawthron Institute in New Zealand takes inland waters, and Ana Novoa of the Institute of Botany in the Czech Academy of Sciences takes terrestrial invasions, which keeps the two realms on separate tracks.
- Two further deputies handle conference material, Mattias Johansson of the University of The Bahamas for ICAIS proceedings and Amy E. Fowler of George Mason University for ICMB proceedings.
- About forty associate editors handle individual manuscripts, and their affiliations run from the U.S. Forest Service and Fisheries and Oceans Canada to universities in China, South Africa, Ecuador and the Czech Republic.
- The advisory board keeps former editors close at hand, listing Sarah Bailey, Marnie Campbell and the founder Elías D. Dana alongside Frances E. Lucy and Fred Wells.
- Vadim E. Panov, who works at the centre in Finland, is the managing editor and the address for correspondence, handling the flow of files rather than the scientific verdict.
- Review is double-blind, the manuscript file must be anonymous, author names and addresses go on a separate title page, and the document properties have to be stripped before upload.
- Submissions enter through Editorial Manager, pass a pre-review check, and are then assigned to a handling editor who collects reports and returns them with a decision.
- The editors keep a fixed set of formats, among them research articles, short communications, risk assessments, management in practice notes, technical reports and grant proposals, with guest editorials capped at six printed pages.
- Manuscripts must be in English and must not be under consideration elsewhere, and a publication ethics statement sets out the handling of misconduct, authorship disputes and corrections.
- Authors are expected to place species records and sequence data in public repositories at submission rather than after acceptance, and citizen science datasets count as evidence when the methods are documented.
