Lancaster University, officially The University of Lancaster, is a collegiate public research university in Lancaster, Lancashire, England, established by royal charter in 1964 as one of the plate glass universities created in that decade.兰卡斯特大学（Lancaster University，正式名称 The University of Lancaster）是一所位于英格兰兰开夏郡兰卡斯特市的学院制公立研究型大学，1964 年依据皇家特许状设立，是 1960 年代创办的“平板玻璃大学”之一。

History

Between 1958 and 1961 seven new plate glass universities were announced, including Lancaster, and the choice of Lancaster as the site of the fourth new university was announced on 23 November 1961.1958 年至 1961 年间，英国宣布创办七所新的“平板玻璃大学”，兰卡斯特名列其中；1961 年 11 月 23 日，官方宣布选址兰卡斯特兴建第四所新大学。

Academics

The university is organised into four faculties, divided into departments that are sometimes named schools, with each faculty led by an Executive Dean and each department by a Head of Department or School.学校下设四个学部，学部之下设系，有些系称为学院；每个学部由一位执行院长领导，每个系则由系主任或院长负责。

Campus

The purpose-built campus occupies Bailrigg, a 360-acre site donated by Lancaster City Council in 1963 about three miles south of the city centre, with the buildings on a hilltop and landscaped parkland on the lower slopes.专门规划的校区位于拜尔里格，这片 360 英亩的用地由兰卡斯特市议会于 1963 年捐赠，距市中心约三英里；建筑群坐落于山顶，较低的山坡则是园林化绿地。

Student life

Lancaster University Students' Union is the representative body of students at the university, and unusually there is no main union building, the union instead being organised through the eight college Junior Common Rooms, each with its own social venues and meeting spaces.兰卡斯特大学学生会是该校学生的代表机构；与多数大学不同，这里没有主学生会大楼，学生会改由八所学院的初级公共休息室组织运作，各学院都拥有自己的社交场所与会议空间。
