Kaohsiung Medical University

Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU) is a private medical university located in Sanmin District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan, China, founded in 1954 as Kaohsiung Medical College and elevated to university status in 1999.高雄醫學大學（KMU）是位於中國台灣高雄市三民區的一所私立醫學大學，1954年以前身「高雄醫學院」之名創校，1999年升格為大學。

It is the oldest private medical school in the region and runs MD, master's and doctoral programmes across eight academic colleges, from medicine and dentistry to pharmacy and nursing.它是該區域歷史最悠久的私立醫學院校，設有八個學院，涵蓋醫學、牙醫、藥學、護理等領域的學士、碩士與博士課程。

History

• Pharmacologist Tu Tsung-ming, the first ethnic Chinese to earn a doctorate of medicine, founded the institution as Kaohsiung Medical College in 1954, the first private medical college in Taiwan.藥理學家杜聰明是首位獲醫學博士學位的華人，他於1954年創辦高雄醫學大學的前身高雄醫學院，是台灣第一所私立醫學院。

• Its board of trustees was organized on July 21, Tu was appointed dean on October 3 and the college formally opened on October 16, 1954.董事會於7月21日組成，杜聰明於10月3日被聘為院長，學校於1954年10月16日正式開校。

• Former Kaohsiung mayor Chen Chi-chuan donated more than eleven jia of land and became the first chairman of the board, while physicians Ho Li-tung and Chiu Hsien-tien were among the joint founders.曾任高雄市市長的陳啟川捐贈超過十一甲土地並出任首任董事長，醫師何禮門、邱賢添等亦為創校合辦者。

• The first medical class enrolled 61 students, and in its early years the college became known for research in tropical medicine and snake-venom proteins.首屆醫學系錄取61名學生，創校初期以熱帶醫學與蛇毒蛋白研究著稱。

• In 1957 the college expanded beyond medicine by founding a pharmacy department and a dental school.1957年，學院在醫學之外增設藥學部門與牙醫學科，擴大辦學範疇。

• The affiliated teaching hospital opened on June 16, 1957, with its outpatient department at first occupying rented premises on Liuhe 2nd Road.附設醫院於1957年6月16日正式成立，初期的門診部借設於六合二路的租用房舍。

• In 1958 the college created the four-year Mountain Physician Medical Training Program, enrolling two cohorts of 30 Indigenous high-school graduates in 1958 and 1959 with public funding so that they would return to practise in Indigenous communities.1958年設立四年制山地醫師醫學專修科，以公費招收1958與1959兩屆各30名原住民高中畢業生，培訓其返回原鄉執業。

• Tu Tsung-ming remained dean until September 1966, completing a twelve-year tenure at the head of the young college.杜聰明執掌校務至1966年9月，歷任院長達十二年之久。

• A three-year associate nursing programme was established in 1968 and succeeded by a four-year School of Nursing in 1975.1968年創立三年制護理專科學程，1975年由四年制護理學系取代。

• Construction of the hospital's first purpose-built medical building began in June 1968 and its first phase opened in June 1970.附設醫院首棟自建醫療大樓於1968年6月動工，一期於1970年6月啟用。

• When the hospital complex was completed in 1970 it was named Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital in memory of Chen Chung-ho, father of founding board chairman Chen Chi-chuan.醫療大樓於1970年完工後命名為中和紀念醫院，以紀念首任董事長陳啟川之父陳中和。

• During the deanship of Hsieh Hsien-chen from 1973 to 1991 the college grew from four academic departments to twelve and established six master's and three doctoral programmes.謝顯臣於1973年至1991年任院長期間，學院由四學系擴增至十二學系，並設立六個碩士班與三個博士班。

• In 2016 the alumni Chen Tung-jung and Chang Jian-guo alleged that the Chen family had turned the university into a private holding, with members across three generations serving as successive board directors.2016年校友陳東榮與張建國指控陳氏家族把學校變為私產，三代成員歷任歷屆董事。
