Journal of Southern Hemisphere Earth Systems Science
Journal of Southern Hemisphere Earth Systems Science is a peer-reviewed journal of environmental and earth-system research that CSIRO Publishing produces for the Australian Bureau of Meteorology in association with the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society.《南半球地球系统科学杂志》是一份同行评议的地球系统与环境研究期刊,由 CSIRO Publishing 替澳大利亚气象局出版,并与 Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society 合作。
Its remit is the mean state, variability and change of the atmosphere, the oceans and the land surface of the Southern Hemisphere, including the cryosphere, treated at scales from regional to hemispheric.
Articles are free to read and carry no publication charge, every paper is given a DOI, and the serial is registered under the electronic ISSN 2206-5865 within the Science Citation Index Expanded.
Scope
- The scope statement is unusually explicit about what the journal accepts, and its organising principle is that a contribution should speak to the southern half of the globe rather than to a single discipline.
- General circulation of the atmosphere and of the oceans forms the core of the list, so studies of the wind and current systems that move heat and moisture around the south are standard material.
- Climate change and climate variability are named separately, and papers may address either the observed record of southern change or the mechanisms that produce it.
- Climate impacts form their own heading in the published list, which opens the journal to work linking physical change to water, ecosystems, hazards and infrastructure.
- Climate modelling is in scope, and so is past change in the climate system, including palaeoclimate variability reconstructed from southern archives such as ice cores, sediments and corals.
- Atmospheric dynamics and synoptic meteorology keep the journal's forecasting lineage visible, with pressure systems, fronts and southern storm tracks long-standing subjects.
- Mesoscale meteorology and severe weather, together with tropical meteorology, cover convective storms, heat waves, drought, and the tropical cyclones that affect northern Australia and the surrounding oceans.
- Observation systems and remote sensing of atmospheric, oceanic and land-surface processes are listed as a field in their own right, which admits instrument, retrieval and product-development papers.
- Weather, climate and ocean prediction appear together with data assimilation applied to those subject areas, a pairing that reflects the operational community the journal serves.
- Atmospheric and oceanic composition and chemistry bring aerosols, trace gases and biogeochemical cycling into the range of admissible topics.
- Physical oceanography is named, along with air-sea interactions and coastal zone processes, so upwelling, boundary currents, sea-level change and shelf dynamics all qualify.
- Hydrology is included explicitly, which makes southern rainfall-runoff, river flow, groundwater and soil-moisture studies admissible without a coupling to atmospheric science.
- Cryosphere-atmosphere and land-surface-atmosphere interactions are listed as separate items, giving Antarctic sea ice and Australian land surface fluxes parallel standing in the scope.
- Space weather completes the published list, with impacts on technology, and ionospheric, magnetospheric and auroral physics, together with space physics generally.
History
- The serial's own history begins in 1952, when volume 1 of Australian Meteorological Magazine appeared as the research publication of the Bureau of Meteorology.
- That title ran annually for 57 volumes, and the National Library of Australia's Trove service holds its papers from 1952 to 2008, the span the Bureau itself gives for the magazine.
- From 2009 the same volume series continued as Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Journal, covering volumes 58 to 65 through 2015 under the ISSN 1836-716X.2009 年起同一卷次序列以 Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Journal 之名延续,2015 年的第 65 卷为止共 58 至 65 卷,使用 ISSN 1836-716X。
- The present title begins with volume 66, published in 2016, and the container title deposited in Crossref changes to Journal of Southern Hemisphere Earth Systems Science from that volume onward.
- Volume numbering never restarted through the two name changes, so the single sequence runs from 1952 to volume 76, the volume in which 2026 material is being issued.
- Identifiers moved with the titles: 0004-9743 for the magazine, 1836-716X for the meteorology and oceanography journal, and 2206-5865 registered for the online serial, with deposits of early renamed issues still citing 1836-716X.
- Ownership stayed with the Bureau throughout, while production changed hands: the Bureau published the journal itself until CSIRO Publishing took over the imprint in 2020.
- From that year the masthead names the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society as an associated body, linking the journal to the professional community that reads AMOJ material.
- Directory of Open Access Journals records the serial's open-access start as 2019, and its listing shows no article-processing charge and no other author charge.
- Coverage in Science Citation Index Expanded spans two categories, with OCEANOGRAPHY ranking the journal 42 of 67 titles and METEOROLOGY & ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES 91 of 114 in the 2025 edition.
- The impact-factor series reported for the current title runs 1.878 in 2022, 2.5 in 2023, 3.3 in 2024 and 1.9 in 2025, and the 2025 release gives a five-year factor of 4.9.
- For 2025 the same report counts 35 citable documents and 543 citations, with a Journal Citation Indicator of 0.65, a cited half-life of 5.2 years and a JIF percentile of 38.1.
- Volume 76 of 2026 carries its third issue, the three-part annual shape the serial now keeps.2026
- Under the earlier title the journal regularly printed the Bureau's Seasonal climate summary southern hemisphere as ordinary numbered articles, a practice visible in deposits through 2015.
- Journal Citation Reports supplies the citation abbreviation J SO HEMISPH EARTH, the short form used in reference lists for the renamed serial.
Editors
- Editorial authority sits with the journal's own structure as published by the producer, a standing editorial board that takes submissions for the Bureau-owned title and works with CSIRO Publishing on production.
- Volume 66 of 2016, the first under the present title, opened with an editorial signed by Sophie Lewis, and a further editorial note from the same hand followed in volume 67.2016 年第 66 卷作为现名首卷,以署名 Sophie Lewis 的社论开篇,第 67 卷又见同一手笔的编辑注。
- Review is single anonymous, the model the producer records for this title, so referees see the authors' names while authors do not see the referees'.
- Its scope statement invites authors to write to the Editor before submitting, asking whether a proposed topic suits the journal, a pre-submission enquiry the Bureau title has kept.
- Editors apply the southern dimension as a test of fit, since the published scope ties every listed subject to the hemisphere rather than to a process studied anywhere.
- Manuscripts are screened for textual overlap before review, a policy the producer documents alongside its editorial structure and open-access statement.
- Because no charge falls on authors, the editorial decision is made independently of publication fees, and accepted papers are released free to read with a DOI assigned at registration.
- Authors transfer copyright to the publisher and the deposited licence terms for the open version are CC BY-NC-ND, permitting reuse for non-commercial ends without adaptation.
- Catalogue records for the title put the interval from submission to publication at about twelve weeks, a figure the journal's modest output of some thirty papers a year makes workable.
- The society named on the masthead draws its members from the Australian and regional meteorology and oceanography community, the same community that supplied the predecessor titles' editorial boards.
- Carrying operational seasonal forecasts among research articles remains a feature of the editorial policy, a habit inherited from a Bureau publication and continued after the change of imprint in 2020.
