Journal of Quantitative Criminology
Journal of Quantitative Criminology (commonly abbreviated as ''J. Quant. Criminol.') is a peer-reviewed criminology journal published by Springer. It was founded in 1985, its inaugural issue appearing in March 1985, by James Alan Fox of Northeastern University, who served as founding editor. Its current co-editors-in-chief are P. Jeffrey Brantingham and George Mohler, it appears four times a year, and its 2025 impact factor is 2.7.Journal of Quantitative Criminology(常用缩写 J. Quant. Criminol.) [1]
Scope
- Disciplinary boundary: The journal applies quantitative techniques to substantive, methodological and evaluative concerns within criminology. The disciplines it draws on extend well beyond criminology itself to statistics, sociology, geography, political science, economics and engineering. *
- Content types: It publishes original research, brief methodological critiques and papers exploring new directions for study, and it focuses on the application of quantitative techniques at all complexity levels, so that a paper answering an important question with a plain method may be as welcome as one using a recondite technique. *
- Intellectual orientation: The editors frame progress in quantitative criminology around three ideas, namely importation of statistical approaches pioneered in other fields, introspection on how criminological data and contexts affect the use of those approaches, and innovation in methods built for criminological problems rather than imported wholesale. *
- Audience and methodological preference: The readership is the quantitative community of criminology at large. The editors are equally interested in papers that make a substantive contribution to criminology while using quantitative techniques, whether through new analytic techniques or the assessment of existing methodological tools, and they explicitly invite submissions from economists, psychologists and public health researchers. *
- Review practice and international participation: The journal handles roughly 200 manuscripts a year, screens them in house first and desk-rejects those with little prospect of eventual publication, while encouraging submissions from outside the United States so that crime and justice problems can be seen comparatively. It is published as a hybrid title with an open access option.
History
- 1983: The proposal to launch the journal was put to nearly one hundred leading criminologists in a survey, and the majority opinion was that the new publication would never get off the ground.1983 年: 创刊动议最初以问卷形式征询近百位主要犯罪学学者,得到的普遍判断是这份新刊不会存续下去。*
- March 1985: The inaugural issue appeared with James Alan Fox as founding editor. Its opening statement argued for a needed forum bringing together empirical and methodological advances made in a number of scholarly traditions, and the first volume carried papers by operations researchers, economists and sociologists.1985 年 3 月: 首卷首期出版,由 James Alan Fox 任创刊主编,卷首社言主张为散布于多个学术传统中的实证与方法论进展提供一个汇聚的论坛,首卷作者来自运筹学、经济学与社会学。*
- Early years: Fox served as founding editor for about seven years, after which the editorship passed in turn to John H. Laub, Michael Maltz, David McDowall, James P. Lynch and Alex R. Piquero. *
- Publisher changes: The original publisher was Plenum, which later morphed into Kluwer and then into Springer. The publisher's ability to typeset mathematical formulae and complex tables cleanly was one of the selling points the journal used to attract authors in its early years. *
- Recent figures: The journal appears four times a year, with a 2025 impact factor of 2.7 and a five-year impact factor of 4.6, a median time from submission to first decision of 11 days, and downloads of about 343,000 in 2025. *
Editors
- Co-editors-in-chief: The current co-editors-in-chief are P. Jeffrey Brantingham of the University of California, Los Angeles and George Mohler of Boston University, whose work is known respectively for spatial criminology and predictive modelling of crime. *
- Previous editors: Before them John H. MacDonald and Greg Ridgeway served as co-editors-in-chief, both of the University of Pennsylvania, and together published the editors' note setting out the journal's intellectual agenda.
