Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental Health
Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental Health is a quarterly journal on the mental health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people, founded in 1989 as the Journal of Gay & Lesbian Psychotherapy, published by Taylor & Francis under this title from 2008 to 2025 and now issued as The Journal of LGBTQ+ Mental Health. It carries clinical, empirical and policy work, and its 2025 Journal Impact Factor is 1.9, JCR Psychiatry Q3 (187/293) within the Emerging Sources Citation Index.《男女同性恋心理健康杂志》是一份关注女同、男同、双性恋、跨性别与酷儿群体精神卫生的季刊,1989 年以《Journal of Gay & Lesbian Psychotherapy》之名创刊,2008 至 2025 年由 Taylor & Francis 以现名出版,现以《The Journal of LGBTQ+ Mental Health》之名延续。
Scope
- Sexuality and gender are treated as ordinary clinical variables here, so a paper may open on a single case and close on questions of staffing, training or law without passing through a diagnostic argument first.
- Minority stress remains the organising idea, and studies trace how stigma, concealment and expected rejection turn into depression, anxiety and heavy drinking across decades of exposure.
- Coming out is examined as a process rather than an event, with work on disclosure to family, to employers and to clinicians, and on what follows when a disclosure is met badly.
- Assessment and care for transgender and gender diverse adults form a substantial strand, including the psychological evaluation that precedes hormone treatment and the letters clinicians are asked to write for it.
- Young people enter through schools, bullying, family rejection and the first contact with child mental health services, where a single response can settle whether the family comes back at all.
- HIV and AIDS remain in scope long after effective treatment arrived, chiefly as a source of bereavement, survivor guilt and the mental health of people who are ageing with the virus.
- Substance use is handled beside mood and anxiety rather than in a separate specialty, since drinking and drug use often carry the same social meaning that the presenting problem does.
- Suicide and self-harm research appears regularly, and papers weigh risk against the protection that community, chosen family and a clinician who does not pathologise the patient can supply.
- Older lesbian, gay and bisexual adults, and their entry into residential care, raise questions about disclosure to staff, visitation rights and the isolation that follows a partner's death.
- Couple and family work sits inside the clinical remit, with papers on parenting, adoption, donor conception and the division of roles in relationships that the law recognised only recently.
- Religion and spirituality come up where they collide with sexuality, and the harm done by conversion practices is examined together with the bans that several jurisdictions have enacted.
- Cultural competence is treated as a trainable skill, and papers describe curricula, supervision and the gaps left when a clinic serves a population it has never thought to ask about.
- Policy and law belong here as well, and the mental health consequences of marriage equality, service rules and insurance design are handled as research questions with measurable outcomes.
- Method matters as much as topic, and papers discuss community-based recruitment, small samples and the difficulty of comparing sexual minority groups across countries with different legal climates.
History
- The title began in 1989 as the Journal of Gay & Lesbian Psychotherapy, issued from New York by Haworth Medical Press at a moment when the AIDS epidemic had made the mental health of gay men a clinical emergency.
- Haworth built its list from narrow professional journals, and a title addressed to therapists working with lesbian and gay patients fitted that model, since general psychiatric journals carried little of the material.
- The earlier journal carried the ISSNs 0891-7140 in print and 1540-7128 online, its first volume appeared in 1989, and volume 11 closed the run under that name.
- Early volumes did not always reach four issues, and the Crossref record for the old ISSNs has years in the 1990s with nothing registered at all, 1992 among them.
- In 2008 the title changed and a new pair of ISSNs was registered, 1935-9705 for print and 1935-9713 for the online edition, while the volume count ran on without a break.2008 年刊物改用现名并登记新刊号,印刷版为 1935-9705,网络版为 1935-9713,卷号则一路承续未断。
- Volume 12 therefore opened in 2008 and volume 29 carries the issues of 2025, so any volume can be dated by counting back one year at a time from the present title.
- The run under this name ended with volume 29, and from volume 30 the journal appears as The Journal of LGBTQ+ Mental Health under new ISSNs, 3067-8935 for print and 3067-8943 for the online edition, with the volume count carried over.
- The new name widened the remit from psychotherapy to mental health at large, admitting psychiatry, nursing, public health and policy work that the old title would have excluded on its face.
- Publication moved with the title, from Haworth in New York to Taylor & Francis, whose imprint for the journal is recorded in Philadelphia, and the issues now appear on the publisher's online platform.
- Four issues a year have been the pattern since the 2008 rename, and the 2025 volume closed at number four, which agrees with the quarterly frequency recorded by the National Library of Medicine.
- Indexing took the usual route for a specialist title, with entry into the Emerging Sources Citation Index rather than the Science Citation Index Expanded, and PubMed listing a selection of its articles only.
- The Journal Impact Factor stood at 1.9 for 2023, rose to 2.3 for 2024 and fell back to 1.9 for 2025, against a five-year figure of 2.9 in the latest year.
- Output is small even by the standards of a specialty journal, at about eleven articles on the 2025 count, and the citation total near 1,080 carries a cited half-life of 7.6 years.
- Open access has stayed marginal, with gold open access at about four per cent of output, so most papers remain inside the subscription that libraries buy from the publisher.
- The Crossref record holds close to a thousand DOIs under the current title, and the great majority are backfile items registered retrospectively for volumes published before 2008.
Editors
- Editorial responsibility rests with an editor-in-chief, who works with an editorial board whose names and affiliations the publisher lists on the journal's own pages and revises as appointments change.
- The Association of Gay & Lesbian Psychiatrists is named on the cover as the professional body the journal serves, and the National Library of Medicine carries that sponsorship in its catalogue note.
- That board is drawn from clinical practice and academic research, and the roster on the publisher's site is the one to consult, since printed issues lag behind the appointments.
- Submissions arrive through the publisher's online system, and the instructions for authors set out the article types, the reference style and the declarations each paper must carry.
- Papers are first appraised by the editor, and those found suitable go to independent referees, whose reports return to the editor before a decision is drafted and sent to the author.
- Referees are asked to weigh method and clinical usefulness together, since a paper that cannot be used in a consulting room is of limited value to a readership made up largely of practitioners.
- Given the remit, reviewers commonly press authors on sampling, on how participants were recruited and on whether a study can speak for anyone beyond the group it surveyed.
- Case material and practice accounts go through review with the same care as empirical papers, though the criteria differ, and authors are expected to say what was learned rather than what was done.
- Themed issues are organised from time to time with guest editors, usually gathered around one direction that the field has left unattended, and the call is issued through the publisher's site.
- Ethics follow the publisher's code and the Committee on Publication Ethics, and corrections, expressions of concern and retractions are handled through the publisher's procedures rather than by the editor alone.
- Decisions on individual papers are made by the journal, and the publisher states that editorial independence is guaranteed, which counts for much in a field where a finding can turn political overnight.
- Authors keep copyright under the publisher's standard agreement or may pay for open access, and that choice is settled at acceptance rather than at the point of submission.
