Journal of Fish Biology
Journal of Fish Biology is the official journal of the Fisheries Society of the British Isles, published by Wiley, and has appeared without interruption since 1969 as a forum for research on fish in marine, estuarine and fresh water.《鱼类生物学杂志》是英国鱼类学会
It covers all aspects of fish biology, their exploitation and their importance to human society, and its 2025 Journal Impact Factor is 1.9 against a five-year value of 2.2.
Scope
- The aims statement is deliberately wide, claiming all aspects of fish biology along with their exploitation and their importance to human society, and it holds the journal to finfish rather than to aquatic life in general.
- Marine, estuarine and fresh water systems all fall inside that remit, so a paper on a deep-sea gadoid and a paper on a lowland river cyprinid can sit in the same issue.
- Taxonomy and systematics remain a named strength, with new species descriptions, redescriptions and regional faunal surveys appearing in most volumes.
- Morphology, anatomy and development are treated alongside molecular work, and osteology or larval ontogeny papers often carry the descriptive detail that field surveys cannot supply.
- Ecology and distribution form the largest single stream, taking in habitat use, community structure, trophic relations and the shifting ranges that accompany environmental change.
- Behavioural papers range from schooling and social learning to feeding tactics, spawning behaviour and the responses of fish to noise made by human activity.
- Physiology covers respiration, osmoregulation, thermal tolerance, swimming performance and endocrine control, often set against climate warming or hypoxic water.
- Genetics and population studies address stock structure, phylogeography, pedigree reconstruction and the genomic basis of local adaptation in wild and cultured stocks.
- Growth, age determination, maturity schedules and life-history variation are regular fare, since those quantities underlie both stock assessment and conservation planning.
- Disease, immunology and parasitology have a constituency of their own, with papers on pathogen surveys, immune gene expression and host-parasite dynamics in wild and farmed fish.
- Aquaculture is treated as applied fish biology, taking in broodstock management, larval rearing, nutrition, welfare and the genetic improvement of cultured strains.
- Pollution impacts and toxicology enter through work on contaminants, microplastics, acidification and the sublethal endpoints that link exposure to population change.
- Migration and movement ecology lean increasingly on telemetry, otolith chemistry and tagging, and the journal publishes both the methods and the field results they make possible.
- Fisheries science and conservation sit at the applied end, where stock assessment, bycatch questions and the status of exploited species meet the stated interest in human use.
- Article types run from full papers and brief communications to review articles and the special issues that gather the proceedings of the society's annual symposium.
History
- The first volume appeared in 1969 under the imprint of Academic Press in London and New York, published for the Fisheries Society of the British Isles.
