Journal of Clinical Neuroscience
Journal of Clinical Neuroscience is the monthly peer-reviewed journal of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, founded in Melbourne in 1994 and now published by Elsevier for clinicians who treat disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system.
Scope
- The remit is the clinical care of patients with disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system, written by neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists, neuropathologists and orthopaedic spine surgeons.
- Psychiatry, otolaryngology and purely laboratory work sit outside that remit unless the link to clinical neuroscience is explicit, a boundary the journal states without hedging.
- Cerebrovascular disease takes a large share, covering ischaemic stroke and thrombolysis, aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage, arteriovenous malformations, carotid stenosis and endovascular thrombectomy.
- Neuro-oncology papers deal with glioma grading and resection, meningioma, skull base tumours, pituitary lesions and brain metastases, and with the cognitive cost of treatment.
- Epilepsy enters both as a diagnostic problem, through video-EEG and imaging work-up, and as a surgical one, through temporal and extratemporal resections and their seizure outcomes.
- Spinal disorders are handled by neurosurgeons and orthopaedic spine surgeons alike, from degenerative disc disease and spondylolisthesis to deformity, trauma and instrumentation.
- Functional work includes deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease and tremor, spinal cord stimulation for pain, and the programming difficulties that follow implantation.
- Trauma and neurocritical care are regular fare, running from traumatic brain injury and intracranial pressure management to decompressive craniectomy and outcome prediction.
- Peripheral nerve and neuromuscular disease receive steady attention, covering entrapment neuropathies, nerve repair, myasthenia gravis and the electrophysiology that separates them.
- Infection, inflammation and demyelination arrive through meningitis, brain abscess, multiple sclerosis and the neurosurgical complications that follow immunosuppression.
- Paediatric practice covers hydrocephalus, craniosynostosis, spina bifida and childhood tumours, together with the transfer of such patients into adult services.
- Imaging, neurophysiology and neuropathology are treated as parts of a clinical decision rather than separate sciences, so papers tend to end with what the finding changed at the bedside.
- The stated readership runs wider than physicians, taking in advanced practice providers, nurses and students, which shapes how much background an accepted paper has to supply.
History
- The first volume appeared in 1994 under the Churchill Livingstone imprint in Melbourne, its subtitle naming the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia as the body it served.
- Volume 1, number 1 opened with a message from the society's president, Gavin Fabinyi, followed by an editorial from Andrew Kaye, who later served as editor-in-chief and is now listed as emeritus editor.
- That opening issue set the pattern, with seizure outcomes after temporal lobectomy, a frameless stereotactic wand, intra-arterial papaverine for vasospasm and a six-case skull base chordoma series.
- A review of cerebral vasospasm by Christopher Dorsch and Trevor King ran in three instalments across the first volume, a long educational format the journal has kept ever since.
- Frequency grew in steps, with four issues in 1994, six by 1999, eight in 2005 and twelve by 2008, while the volume number still advanced one per year.
- Volume 6 carried six numbers in 1999, the arrangement the National Library of Medicine still records, though the journal had moved beyond it long before that record was last revised.
- The imprint shifted from Melbourne to Edinburgh by 2000, the year the title entered MEDLINE at volume 7, number 1, with PubMed and Index Medicus dated to the same issue.
- Churchill Livingstone went through the medical publishing consolidation of the late 1990s, passing into Harcourt and then to Reed Elsevier, and the journal now carries the Elsevier name.
- Volume numbering records the change of scale, one volume a year from 1994 to 2015 when volume 22 closed the run, then twelve volumes annually from volume 23 in January 2016.
- Since 2016 each month has been a volume of its own with continuous article numbering, so a citation now runs by volume and article number rather than by page range.
- The sequence reached volume 119 in 2024, and volumes 143 to 154 cover 2026, a pace of twelve volumes a year that has now held for a decade.
- Four bodies stand behind the title, the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, the Australian and New Zealand Society for Neuropathology, the Taiwan Neurosurgical Society and the Asian Australasian Society of Neurological Surgeons.
- Indexing settled in Science Citation Index Expanded across two Journal Citation Reports categories, clinical neurology and neurosciences, and the 2025 ranking places the journal 201st of 296 in the first.
- The impact factor has stayed near 2 for five years, at 1.961 in 2021, 2.116 in 2022, then 1.9, 1.8 and 1.9, with a five-year figure of 1.9 for 2025.
- Total citations approach 12,400 with a cited half-life of 7.5 years, and roughly 470 items appear each year, most of them clinical research rather than reviews.
- Access stays subscription based with a hybrid open-access option, and gold open access accounts for about a tenth of recent output.
Editors
- Charles Y. Liu, a professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, holds the editor-in-chief position.
- A 2016 editorial of his described the title as a forum where the clinical neurosciences could speak to one another, which matches the range of subjects it accepts. [1]
- Neurosurgery has a designated editor of its own, Kate Drummond of Parkville, Melbourne, so the largest single stream of submissions has a specialist reader.
- Drummond also wrote, with Gail Rosseau, the 2021 introduction to a Women's History Month collection on the history of women in neurosurgery. [2]
- Editorial responsibilities follow clinical discipline, and the masthead lists a neurosurgery editor next to the editor-in-chief.
- Manuscripts arrive through Elsevier's Editorial Manager site, and the guide for authors lists original research, case series, reports and correspondence as the accepted forms.
- Correspondence is printed as a matter of course, which keeps published papers open to challenge in the same pages where they appeared.
- The editor-in-chief works from California while the neurosurgery editor works from Melbourne, a split that suits the journal's claim to authors and readers practising around the world.
- Signed commentary on professional questions also appears, such as Leon Lai's 2024 piece asking whether training in open cerebrovascular surgery needs to be rethought. [3]
