Journal of Biomedical Optics
Journal of Biomedical Optics is a monthly Gold Open Access journal published by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, founded in 1996 with its editorial office in Bellingham, Washington. It reports optical systems and techniques that improve health care and biomedical research, and its 2025 impact factor is 3.3 with a CiteScore of 5.9.(Journal of Biomedical Optics)是国际光学与光子学学会(SPIE)出版的金色开放获取月刊,1996 年创办,编辑部设于美国华盛顿州贝灵厄姆。
Scope
- The journal covers fundamentally new devices or algorithms for optical imaging and sensing, drawing on photoacoustics, optical spectroscopy, near-infrared spectroscopy, microscopy, optical coherence tomography, fluorescence, phosphorescence, elastography, hyperspectral methods and other uniquely optical properties.
- It seeks a deeper understanding of light-tissue interaction reached through theoretical transport models such as Monte Carlo, diffusion and electromagnetic approaches, and through physical tissue-simulating phantoms.
- Computational advances in optical image and signal processing and image reconstruction are in scope, including machine learning and artificial intelligence methods that improve detection or performance value.
- Novel medical optical systems tested in animal or human studies or clinical trials are welcome, among them mobile, remote, wearable and implantable technologies.
- Hybrid imaging and interventional systems combining optics with ultrasound, x-rays, magnetic resonance, molecular sensing or electromagnetics also fall within scope, as do photonics, nanophotonics, plasmonics, biosensors, optical reporters and optogenetics with direct biomedical relevance.
History
- The journal was founded in 1996 by SPIE, which launched it with four quarterly issues and placed its editorial office at the society's headquarters in Bellingham, Washington.
- Joseph R. Lakowicz of the University of Maryland School of Medicine served as founding editor-in-chief from 1996 to 1999, followed by Bruce J. Tromberg of the Beckman Laser Institute. (University of Maryland School of Medicine)的 Joseph R. Lakowicz(1996–1999),其后由(Beckman Laser Institute)的 Bruce J. Tromberg 接任。
- Lihong V. Wang became editor-in-chief in 2009, and in January 2011 the journal doubled its frequency from bimonthly to monthly publication to keep pace with submissions.2009 年 Lihong V. Wang 出任主编;2011 年 1 月该刊出版频次翻倍,由双月刊改为月刊,以应对日益增长的投稿量。
- It became fully Gold Open Access in January 2019 under a CC BY 4.0 licence, and it now publishes article-at-a-time with twelve monthly issues a year.
