Journal of Aerospace Information Systems
Journal of Aerospace Information Systems is a monthly journal of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, published from Reston, Virginia, and given to computing, information, networks and communication as they are used in aircraft, spacecraft and the airspace system. It opened in 2004 as the Journal of Aerospace Computing, Information, and Communication and took its present name in 2013 without breaking the volume sequence. Its 2025 Journal Impact Factor is 1.9, which places it Q2 at 27 of 59 in ENGINEERING, AEROSPACE.《航空航天信息系统杂志》是美国航空航天学会的月刊,在弗吉尼亚州雷斯顿出版,主题为计算、信息、网络与通信在飞机、航天器与空域系统中的运用。
Scope
- The stated aim is to disseminate original archival papers that report new theoretical developments, novel applications and case studies in aerospace computing, information, and networks and communication systems, provided the work addresses problems specific to aerospace.
- A boundary clause keeps it from becoming a general signal-processing or communications outlet, since work on signal processing, electromagnetics, antenna theory and the basic hardware of network transmission falls outside the remit.
- Avionics and airborne software carry the heaviest traffic, with papers on flight-critical code, partitioned and time-triggered architectures, integrated modular avionics and the data buses that connect line-replaceable units.
- Verification and validation of embedded systems receive sustained attention, from model checking and theorem proving to coverage analysis, hardware-in-the-loop testing and the runtime monitors that guard adaptive software in flight.
- Certification is treated as an engineering subject in its own right, with work on DO-178C and its supplements for tools, models and object code, on DO-254 for airborne electronic hardware, and on the assurance cases that regulators now expect to see.
- Guidance, navigation and control enter through their information side, including sensor fusion, fault detection and isolation, navigation integrity and receiver autonomous integrity monitoring, relative navigation and the estimation filters that hold a trajectory estimate together.
- Flight management and trajectory work covers four-dimensional trajectory optimisation, required navigation performance, onboard replanning after an upset and the coupling between a flight management computer and ground automation.
- Air traffic management is approached as an information problem, with trajectory-based operations, system-wide information management, ground delay programmes, arrival metering and the queueing models used to schedule departures into a constrained airspace.
- Communication, navigation and surveillance links draw papers on ADS-B and its integrity, controller-pilot datalink, satellite and air-ground networking, spectrum pressure and the surveillance coverage that remote towers depend upon.
- Unmanned aircraft bring autonomy and human-automation interaction together, with detect-and-avoid logic, ground control station design, authority transitions between operator and vehicle, and the traffic services that separate small drones from manned flights.
- Machine learning and data analytics are treated as aerospace instruments rather than as general methods, so a paper must show what the learned model does for a mission, a fleet or an airspace that conventional analysis could not deliver.
- System health management gathers diagnostics and prognostics, structural and component health monitoring, fault accommodation and the maintenance records that let an operator act on a predicted failure before it grounds an aircraft.
- Spacecraft appear through their information systems, among them mission operations software, telemetry processing, onboard autonomy for science targets, delay-tolerant networking and the ground segment that turns a downlink into a usable product.
- Systems engineering principles, safety and mission assurance sit inside the scope as well, so hazard analysis, requirements traceability and assurance arguments for complex programmes find a home here.
- Formats run from full archival papers and Technical Notes to review articles, and the journal also prints reviews of books, conferences and social media as well as pieces on new models of aerospace education.
History
- The title opened in 2004 as the Journal of Aerospace Computing, Information, and Communication, a launch that gave AIAA a dedicated outlet for software, data and network research alongside its older airframe and propulsion journals.
- Monthly publication was the pattern from the start, and the fourth volume already reached issue 12 in 2007, so no quarterly or bimonthly phase appears anywhere in the record.
- In 2013 the journal was renamed Journal of Aerospace Information Systems and given the ISSN pair 1940-3151 and 2327-3097, a change that widened the brief from the communication channel to the information systems built on top of it.2013 年刊物改用现名,并启用 1940-3151 与 2327-3097 这对新刊号,范围也从通信渠道本身扩到建立在通信之上的信息系统。
- AIAA's own journal list dates the title to 2004 and prints the earlier name in brackets, which makes the two names one journal with one archive rather than a predecessor and a successor.AIAA
- Volume numbers run straight through the rename. The old ISSN record stops at volume 9 for 2012, and the new record's earliest deposit is volume 13 for February 2016, which puts volume 10 in 2013.
- Volumes 10 to 12 are thin in Crossref, since few items from 2013 to 2015 carry the new number, and the visible run thickens again at volume 13, a gap in the metadata rather than in the printing.
- Publication has stayed with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics from the first issue, and the editorial office sits at the society's headquarters in Reston, Virginia.
- Twelve issues a year have held through the recent volumes, with volumes 20 and 21 each carrying issues 1 to 12 and the 2025 volume closing at number 12.
- Access is subscription based with an open access option, and the 2025 Journal Citation Reports put the gold share of its output at 1.25 per cent, a figure that fits a society journal with a small open access budget.
- Clarivate indexes the journal in Science Citation Index Expanded under a single category, engineering and aerospace, where the 2025 percentile is 55.1 and the rank is 27 of 59.Clarivate
- Impact factors have moved unevenly. The 2021 figure was 1.185, 2022 brought 1.444, 2023 fell to 1.3, 2024 reached 1.5 and 2025 closed at 1.9, with a five-year value of 2.2 and a JCI of 0.53.
- Output is modest for an aerospace title, about 77 papers in the 2025 count, with 1256 citations to the whole run and a cited half-life of 4.8 years, both signs of a fast-moving literature.
- Several volumes open with a signed year-end review from the editor, a practice visible from the 2017 review in volume 15 through the 2025 review in volume 23, and those pieces read as a running account of what the journal has been accepting.
- The 2026 volume is the twenty-third, and the whole archive from 2004 can be reached through Aerospace Research Central under the old and the new title alike.2026 年出到第 23 卷,2004 年以来的全部存档在 Aerospace Research Central 上可以按新旧两个刊名调取。
Editors
- Ella Atkins is editor-in-chief. A professor of aerospace engineering, she gives Virginia Tech as her affiliation on the 2022 year-end review and spent many years before that at the University of Michigan.
- Her own research runs on autonomous fault-tolerant flight management and unmanned aircraft, a background that matches the journal's steady pull towards autonomy, traffic integration and onboard decision making.
- She has used the editor's pages for programmatic statements, among them a 2018 editorial on shepherding what it called a new era of integrated aerospace information systems.
- Associate editors are appointed by technical area, and the roster shifts as fields move. Peng Wei, an AIAA Associate Fellow working on air traffic management and aircraft autonomy, is one of the current associate editors.
- An associate editor owns the file, chooses reviewers and writes the recommendation, while the editor-in-chief takes the final decision and answers for the journal's standards.
- Review is single anonymised. Reviewers are not named to authors, while author names and affiliations travel with the manuscript, which keeps specialists in a small field willing to report plainly.
- AIAA's ethical standards bind the whole chain, and the editor-in-chief is charged with maintaining them for review and acceptance, including the handling of suspected duplicate submission.AIAA
- Manuscripts arrive through Aerospace Research Central in English only, and there is no pre-submission enquiry step, so a first decision follows the external reports rather than an editorial screening letter.
- Technical Notes give short results a route into print, and the editors judge them on whether the increment is genuinely new rather than on length alone.
- Special issues are common. A 2016 collection on intelligent systems for space exploration filled an issue of volume 13, and guest editors are named alongside the regular editors on such occasions.
- The board is drawn mostly from United States universities and laboratories, with members from Europe and Asia added as the traffic management and autonomy communities have grown.
