Jinan University

Jinan University (JNU), known in Chinese as Jida, is a national public comprehensive university in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, whose main campus stands on Huangpu Avenue West in the Tianhe District.暨南大学（简称暨大，JNU）是中国广东省广州市的国立公办综合性大学，校本部位于天河区黄埔大道西。

Founded in 1906 in Nanjing as Jinan Academy, it is the first university in China founded by the government for students from overseas Chinese communities and the first Chinese university to enrol foreign students.学校 1906 年创办于南京，初名暨南学堂，是中国政府创办的第一所华侨高等学府，也是中国第一所招收外国留学生的高校。

It is jointly built by the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China, the Ministry of Education and the Guangdong Provincial Government, and in the 2027 QS World University Rankings it is placed 483rd.学校由中共中央统一战线工作部、教育部与广东省人民政府共建；在 2027 年 QS 世界大学排名中位列第 483。

History

• In 1906 Duanfang, the Viceroy of Liangjiang, memorialised the Guangxu Emperor to let Chinese from Southeast Asia, Hawaii and San Francisco study in Nanjing, and Jinan Academy was founded south of Gulou in the Xuejiaxiang quarter.1906 年，两江总督端方上奏光绪皇帝，请求允许南洋群岛及檀香山、旧金山等处的侨民回南京读书；暨南学堂随后在今南京鼓楼以南的薛家巷创设。

• The name Jinan comes from the Classic of History, whose phrase reaching southward expresses the intention to spread Chinese learning to the overseas communities of the south.“暨南”二字出自《尚书·禹贡》，“朔南暨，声教讫于四海”一句表达了把中华文教传播至南方海外的意愿。

• Zheng Hongnian was appointed the first head of the academy, and on 23 March 1907 the first batch of 21 overseas Chinese students arrived from Java, followed by a second group of ten.郑洪年出任第一任堂长；1907 年 3 月 23 日，第一批 21 名爪哇侨生到校，随后又有第二批 10 名学生抵达。

• Enrolment grew from 167 students in 1909 to 240 in 1911, but the Xinhai Revolution of October 1911 forced the academy to close as students were evacuated to Shanghai.学堂在校生由 1909 年的 167 人增至 1911 年的 240 人；1911 年 10 月辛亥革命爆发，学堂把学生送往上海避难，办学随之中断。

• In November 1917 the Beiyang government's Ministry of Education approved the restoration of the school and appointed Huang Yanpei, head of Jiangsu's education department, to organise it.1917 年 11 月，北洋政府教育部批准恢复暨南学堂，并委派江苏教育司司长黄炎培负责筹办。

• In 1918 the school reopened at its Nanjing site as the National Jinan School, with Huang Yanpei and Zhao Zhengping leading the restoration and an opening ceremony held on 9 September.1918 年暨南学堂在原校址复学并改名为国立暨南学校，由黄炎培与赵正平主持复校事宜，同年 9 月 9 日举行开学典礼。

• In 1923 the male division moved to new premises at Zhenru in Shanghai while the female division stayed in Nanjing, and a National Jinan Commercial College was opened in the same year.1923 年男生部迁往上海真如新校舍，女生部仍留南京；同年独立开设国立暨南商科大学。

• In 1927 the Nanjing female division was merged into Shanghai and the institution was reorganised as the National Jinan University, with Zheng Hongnian as president from June of that year.1927 年南京女生部并入上海，学校改组为国立暨南大学，郑洪年自同年 6 月起任校长。

• Under Zheng the commercial programme became a business school and arts, science, social science and art colleges were added, making Jinan the only overseas Chinese university of republican China.在郑洪年主持下，商科改为商学院，并增设农学院、文哲学院、自然科学院、社会科学院与艺术院，使暨南成为民国时期唯一的华侨大学。

• After the January 28 Incident of 1932 the students of Jinan took an active part in the national salvation movement and drew wide public attention in Nanjing and Shanghai.1932 年一·二八事变后，暨南师生积极参与救亡图存运动，在南京与上海引起社会广泛关注。

• Zheng Hongnian was sent to Southeast Asia in January 1934, Shen Pengfei acted as president and then He Bingsong took charge from July 1935.1934 年 1 月郑洪年奉命赴南洋，校长一职先由沈鹏飞代理，1935 年 7 月起由何炳松继任。

• At the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, nine Jinan students competed for China in athletics, basketball and football, the country's first full Olympic team.1936 年柏林奥运会上，9 名暨南学生代表中国参加田径、篮球与足球比赛，那是中国首次组团参加奥运会。

• From 1937 the war forced the university to move into the Shanghai foreign concessions and then, from 1941, to Jianyang in Fujian, where it remained until 1946.自 1937 年起学校因战事辗转上海租界，1941 年起迁往福建建阳办学，直至 1946 年。

• After the Japanese surrender Jinan returned to Shanghai in 1946, and in June 1949 the Shanghai Military Control Commission formally took over the university.抗战胜利后学校于 1946 年迁回上海；1949 年 6 月上海市军事管制委员会正式接管暨南大学。

• In August 1949 its arts, law and commerce faculties were merged into Fudan University and its science faculties into Jiaotong University, while the name Jinan was retained for a possible future revival.1949 年 8 月，暨南大学文、法、商三院各系并入复旦大学，理学院各系并入交通大学，校名暂予保留以备将来复校。

• In 1958 the university was re-established in Guangzhou, with Tao Zhu as president, a donation of one million yuan from the Hong Kong businessman Wang Kuan-cheng and 1,304 students enrolled in the first year.1958 年学校在广州复办，陶铸出任校长，香港人士王宽诚捐资 100 万元，首年招生 1,304 人。

• Chen Xujing became president in January 1963, and the university adjusted its departments towards a comprehensive pattern oriented to South China, Southeast Asia, the subtropics and the sea.1963 年 1 月陈序经继任校长，学校按“面向华南、面向东南亚、面向亚热带、面向海洋”的方向调整系科专业。

• During the Cultural Revolution the university closed again in 1970 and reopened only in 1978, when Ye Jianying, then chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, supported its revival.文革期间学校于 1970 年再度停办，直到 1978 年才复办，时任全国人大常委会委员长叶剑英对复校给予了大力支持。

• The main Shipai campus stands at 601 Huangpu Avenue West in the Tianhe District of Guangzhou, next to South China Normal University, between Zhongshan Avenue and Huangpu Avenue.石牌主校区位于广州市天河区黄埔大道西 601 号，与华南师范大学相邻，北临中山大道、南接黄埔大道。

• The university runs five campuses in China, at Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, plus the Japan campus in Tokyo that opened in 2021.学校在广州、深圳、珠海三地设有五个校区，并于 2021 年在东京设立日本学院。

Student life

• The university motto is Zhongxin Dujing, meaning loyalty, faithfulness, sincerity and respect, taken from a passage of the Analects in which Confucius answers his student Zizhang.学校校训为“忠信笃敬”，出自《论语·卫灵公》中孔子回答学生子张“言忠信，行笃敬”的一段话。

• The motto was used in the Nanjing period and restored on 2 September 1994 by president Zhou Yaoming, having lapsed during the moves and closures of the mid twentieth century.这一校训在南京建校时期即已使用，二十世纪中叶的迁徙与停办期间一度中断；1994 年 9 月 2 日由校长周耀明宣布恢复。

• The Jinan spirit is summarised as loyalty and sincerity, the unity of knowledge and action, unremitting self-improvement and harmony in diversity.暨南精神概括为“忠信笃敬、知行合一、自强不息、和而不同”。

• The university emblem forms the letters JNU into the shape of a Chinese sailing boat, a symbol of spreading Chinese culture, with the year 1906 beneath the boat and the university name inscribed by Ye Jianying.校徽以字母“JNU”构成一艘中国式帆船，寓意把中华文化传播四海；船下“1906”表示建校年份，校名为叶剑英题写。

• The university song, the Jinan University Song, has lyrics by Long Yin and music by Xiang Xiyuan, and the university has had six different songs during its history.现行《暨南大学校歌》由龙吟作词、相西源作曲；学校历史上先后共有六首校歌。

• The anniversary day is 16 November each year, and the university celebrated its centenary in November 2006 and its 120th anniversary in 2026.学校校庆日为每年 11 月 16 日，2006 年 11 月举行百年庆典，2026 年迎来建校 120 周年。

• Su Bingtian, a Jinan graduate and later a teacher there, ran 9.83 seconds in the 100 metres semi-final at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, becoming the first Chinese athlete to reach an Olympic men's 100 metres final.暨南大学毕业生、后在校任教的苏炳添，2021 年东京奥运会男子 100 米半决赛跑出 9.83 秒，成为首位闯入奥运男子百米决赛的中国人。

• Su was appointed dean of the university's School of Physical Education in April 2025, and the university's debate team beat Peking University in the final of the 10th International Chinese Debate Invitation Championship in 2023.2025 年 4 月苏炳添出任学校体育学院院长；2023 年学校辩论队在第十届国际华语辩论邀请赛决赛中击败北京大学夺冠。

• The alumni association was founded on 25 December 1992, and by 2025 it had 146 alumni organisations on five continents, including offices in Hong Kong and Macau.校友总会成立于 1992 年 12 月 25 日，至 2025 年在五大洲共有 146 个校友组织，并在香港与澳门设立办事处。

Notable people

• Duanfang, the Viceroy of Liangjiang, proposed the creation of an overseas Chinese school in 1906 and is honoured as the founder of Jinan University.两江总督端方于 1906 年上奏创办华侨学堂，被誉为暨南大学的创办人。

• Zheng Hongnian was the first head of Jinan Academy in 1907 and later served as president of National Jinan University from 1927 to 1934, expanding it into five colleges.郑洪年于 1907 年出任暨南学堂第一任堂长，1927 至 1934 年又任国立暨南大学校长，将学校扩展为五个学院。
