Scope
The journal's editorial stance takes advancement of dermatological practice as the measure of fit, requiring that research directly change the understanding of how skin disease is diagnosed, treated or prevented rather than merely observe it from the discipline's periphery. As a member of the American Medical Association's journal family it shares a unified editorial and submission platform with that family's other specialty titles, while its scope stays strictly within skin and its appendages.
- Cutaneous oncology: early recognition, staging and systemic therapy of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer.

The journal is indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded and carries a 2025 impact factor of 10.9, among the highest of any dermatology title.
History
- Founding (1882): the journal descends from the Journal of Cutaneous and Venereal Diseases, founded in 1882, and an official editorial accordingly describes more than a century of continuous publication. The year 1920 marks the American Medical Association's takeover and renaming of the title, not its founding. [1]
- Title succession (1882–2013): the Journal of Cutaneous and Venereal Diseases ran from 1882 to 1886, followed by the Journal of Cutaneous and Genito-Urinary Diseases from 1887 to 1902, The Journal of Cutaneous Diseases, Including Syphilis from 1903 to 1919, and the Archives of Dermatology and Syphilology from 1920 to 1954. The word for syphilology was dropped in 1955, the title became the Archives of Dermatology from 1960 to 2012, and the present name has been used since 2013. [2]
- Joining the AMA (1920): the American Medical Association became the journal's publisher in 1920 and renamed it the Archives of Dermatology and Syphilology, a node often mistaken for a founding year. The title carried a society abbreviation prefix from 1955 to 1960 before reverting to the unprefixed name in 1960. [1]
- Publication format: the journal is monthly, with twelve print and online issues a year and all articles appearing online first. The online edition is refreshed every Wednesday, so a monthly print rhythm runs in parallel with a weekly online one. [3]
- Official acceptance rate: the publisher states an acceptance rate of 8 per cent, with a median of 3 days to first decision and 34 days to a decision with review. The former includes editorial screening and is pulled down heavily by manuscripts rejected without external review. [3]
- Metric trend: the impact factor rose from 8.107 in 2017 to 11.816 in 2021 and has since held between 10.9 and 11.5, standing at 10.9 in 2025, consistent with its rank among dermatology titles. [4]
- Reach: the journal records more than 11.6 million article views and downloads a year, about 63 per cent of submissions coming from outside the United States, and a social media following of over 124,000. [3]
Editors
The journal operates under a single editor who heads the editorial office within the American Medical Association's journal family, with manuscripts submitted through the society's unified author system. The society publishes no editorial process detail beyond the acceptance rate and decision times, and the composition of the editorial office is taken from the masthead.
- Kanade Shinkai (current editor): professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco, her name and institution appearing consistently in the editorial information block of the official author page and in the masthead. [3]
- Frequency and editorial structure: the journal runs a monthly print schedule alongside weekly online updates, with the editorial office working inside the society's journal system so that its process and submission platform match the association's other specialty titles. [3]
- Acceptance and speed: the official 8 per cent acceptance rate and the three-day median to first decision are the principal published evidence for understanding the journal's selection threshold. The two are measured differently, the first being an overall acceptance proportion and the second including editorial screening. [3]
- Standing in the field: among the largest dermatology journals by output and citations, its clinical research is cited directly in dermatological guidelines, and it accounted for close to half of the highest-cited dermatology papers in the 2025 citation tally. [3]
- Historical continuity: more than a century of continuous publication makes the journal the longest-running vehicle in dermatology, and its centenary editorial is itself treated as an important document in the history of the discipline. [1]
