International Journal of Biometeorology
International Journal of Biometeorology (commonly abbreviated as ''Int. J. Biometeorol.') is the official journal of the International Society of Biometeorology, published by Springer. Founded in 1957 as the International Journal of Bioclimatology and Biometeorology, it publishes research on the relationships between the atmospheric environment and living organisms, with a 2025 impact factor of 3.International Journal of Biometeorology(常用缩写 Int. J. Biometeorol.) [1]
Scope
- Scope: the journal is the flagship publication of the International Society of Biometeorology and thematically reflects the society's core research interests. It publishes original research papers, reviews and short communications on studies of the relationships between the atmospheric environment and living organisms.
- Range of the subject: living organisms extend from single-cell organisms to plants and animals, humans included. The atmospheric environment includes climatic and meteorological conditions in both natural and artificial surroundings, as well as electromagnetic radiation and chemical and biological pollutants.
- Theory and application alike: the journal embraces both theoretical and applied research, extending to practical aspects such as living conditions, health and disease.
- Historical and climate-change analysis: the official scope states explicitly that historical analysis and analysis related to climate change fall within what the journal accepts.
- Standards for what is accepted: the editors encourage papers that explore novel methods with results that significantly advance the body of biometeorological knowledge, as well as those that use such knowledge to improve the resilience of human and natural systems. They explicitly discourage manuscripts that merely replicate existing methods, test hypotheses already well addressed in the literature, or produce results of primarily local interest.
- Indexing and metrics: the journal is indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded, in Scopus and in MEDLINE, with a 2025 impact factor of 3, a five-year impact factor of 3.7, and a median of twenty days from submission to first decision. [2]
History
- 1957: the journal was founded as the International Journal of Bioclimatology and Biometeorology, the first issue of the first volume appearing in that year.1957年: 期刊创刊,创刊时的刊名为 International Journal of Bioclimatology and Biometeorology,卷首期即已出版。
- Change of title: the title was later shortened to International Journal of Biometeorology, dropping the bioclimatology element. The journal's identification records carry both the earlier number 0367-8253 and the current 0020-7128.
- Status as the society journal: the journal's tie to the International Society of Biometeorology has been close from the beginning. The publisher's own pages describe it as published for that society, with copyright held by it, and the society itself provides an international forum for interdisciplinary collaboration among meteorologists, health professionals, biologists, climatologists and ecologists.
- Change in the copyright line: the copyright line has at times read Springer Science+Business Media and now reads the International Society of Biometeorology, without any change to Springer as the publisher of the journal.
- Frequency: the journal appeared bimonthly in earlier years, with several sources recording six issues a year, and the pace of publication has since been adjusted.
- Recent years: the impact factor has settled around 3, standing at 3 in 2025 with a five-year figure of 3.7, and the publisher reports annual downloads of over one million.
- Themed collections: the journal organises themed collections. The most recent derives from the 24th International Congress of Biometeorology and accepts invited submissions only. [3]
Editors
- Editors-in-chief: the journal has four editors-in-chief, based in the United States, Spain and Australia. Alison Donnelly is at the Department of Geography, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Angela Lees is at the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences, Animal Science Group, University of Queensland Gatton. Scott C. Sheridan is at the Department of Geography, Kent State University. Pablo Fernández de Arróyabe Hernáez is at the Department of Geography, Urban Planning and Territorial Planning, University of Cantabria in Santander, Spain. The four are spread across two continents and three countries, with backgrounds ranging from geography to animal science, a composition that suits a journal serving meteorological, health and ecological readerships alike.
- Society and editorial office: as the society's flagship title, the editors-in-chief are appointed jointly by the society and the publisher. Editorial judgement is consequently subject both to the society's disciplinary agenda and to the publisher's editorial standards.
- Submission and author satisfaction: manuscripts are lodged through the publisher's online submission system. As an international journal it welcomes research papers from anywhere, provided they are of interest to an international audience. The publisher's author survey reports that one hundred percent of respondents would publish in the journal again. [4]
