Interface Focus
Interface Focus is an interdisciplinary journal published by the Royal Society, issued bimonthly and online only since 2019. It works by theme issue, each number gathering a full issue around a topic crossing the interface of the physical, biological and social sciences under a guest editorial team, and is the newest member of the society's interface family of journals.《界面聚焦》(Interface Focus)是皇家学会(The Royal Society)出版的跨学科学术期刊,双月刊发行,自二〇一九年起仅出网络版。
Scope
Interface Focus takes an unusual stance among the society's journals: it does not accept unsolicited stand-alone papers, all of its content being invited, and each issue is a self-contained interdisciplinary theme. The directions in which themes have run include:Interface Focus
- Biophysics and bioengineering: biophysics, biomechanics, biomaterials, bioengineering and tissue engineering.
- Biocomputation and complexity: biocomputation, biocomplexity, bioinformatics and systems biology.
- Chemistry and nanoscience interfaces: chemical biology, bionanoscience and medical physics.
- Theoretical and synthetic biology: theoretical biology and synthetic biology, understanding living systems through modelling and engineering design.
Each issue typically combines new research, reviews and opinion pieces, introduced by the guest editors, with the author line-up settled between the journal and the guest team. Long subscription-based with a hybrid open-access option, the journal moved to open access from January 2026 under the society's Subscribe to Open scheme, carrying no article processing charge for that year. [1]
History
- Supplement period (2008-2010): the journal began life as a supplement to the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, published alongside it for three years, preparing both content and an author community for independence. [2]
- Independent journal (2011): it became an independent journal in January 2011, described in the society's catalogue as launched as an independent journal in the first editorial appeared online in December 2010, which accounts for the official page's alternative phrasing of a 2010 launch.[3]
- Print ceased (2019): after volume nine the journal stopped its print edition and moved to online-only publication, in step with the society's wider move to digital. [2]
- Subscribe to Open (2026): the society announced that eight of its subscription journals, this one included, would be supported as open access from 2026 under the Subscribe to Open scheme, with no article processing charge in the launch year, reverting to hybrid should annual support fall short. [1]
- Metric standing: the 2025 impact factor is 4.0, placing the journal in the first quartile of biology and zone three of biology in the Chinese Academy of Sciences ranking. [4]
Editors
The journal is run by a single editor-in-chief, with no co-editors or deputy editors, supported by an international editorial board of ten and two professional publishing editors本刊实行单一主编制,不设共同主编与副编辑,配十人国际编委会与两名专职出版编辑;创刊编辑为牛津大学的丹尼斯·诺布尔。 the founding editor was Denis Noble of the University of Oxford. The society publishes neither an acceptance rate nor a review duration for the title.[5]
- Russell Foster (editor-in-chief, January 2018 to December 2027): professor of circadian neuroscience at the University of Oxford and director of the Sir Jules Thorn Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute, known for the discovery of a third class of photoreceptor in the eye beyond rods and cones, with the society's official biography confirming his editorship of the journal. [5]
- Denis Noble (founding editor): professor in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at the University of Oxford and a foundational figure in systems biology, whose computational models of cardiac electrophysiology are early classics of biological modelling. [3]
- Editorial board: the ten board members sit in the United Kingdom, the United States, China, France, Australia and Israel, covering chemistry, biophysics, engineering and cell biology, a size proportionate to the commissioning needs of the theme-issue model. [6]
