Insect Systematics & Evolution
Insect Systematics & Evolution (ISE) is a subscription research journal in systematic entomology, published by Brill of Leiden and devoted to the classification, diversity and evolutionary history of living and fossil insects.《昆虫系统学与进化》(简称 ISE)是一本订阅制的系统昆虫学学术期刊,由莱顿的 Brill 出版,主题涵盖现生与化石昆虫的分类,多样性以及演化历史。
Its roots lie in the Scandinavian periodical Entomologica Scandinavica, which was rechristened at the turn of the 21st century while the volume sequence was carried over unchanged.
The 2025 Journal Citation Reports give the title a Journal Impact Factor of 1.9, a five-year value of 1.4 and a JCI of 0.66, and the journal is indexed in SCIE as well as in Scopus.2025 年《期刊引证报告》给出的影响因子为 1.9,五年值 1.4,JCI 指标 0.66,该刊被 SCIE 与 Scopus 收录。
Scope
- The declared field of the journal is original research on all aspects of systematic entomology, including the evolutionary history of extant and extinct insects and of their close relatives.
- Priority within that field is given to taxonomic revisions and to phylogenetic studies built on morphological evidence together with molecular evidence.
- Reviews and syntheses are explicitly invited, on the condition that they can hold the interest of a broad community of systematic entomologists rather than a single specialist circle.
- Papers that describe a single species, that compile a regional checklist, or that reconstruct phylogeny from few taxa or from one molecular marker alone are generally not accepted.
- Generic and family-level revisions dominate the content, and such papers regularly introduce new genera, new species groups and formal nomenclatural acts.
- Ordinal coverage is broad, with Coleoptera, Hemiptera and Diptera represented in nearly every recent volume.
- Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera form another large stream, including work on crambid moths, nymphalid butterflies, parasitoid wasps and ants.
- Smaller orders are not excluded, and Orthoptera, Neuroptera, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Thysanoptera and Dermaptera all appear in volumes of the past decade.
- Six-legged animals beyond Insecta in the narrow sense fall inside the scope, as shown by contributions on springtails in the family Entomobryidae.
- The boundary is drawn by the systematic question rather than by ordinal membership, and a few contributions address spider lineages that serve as outgroups or comparators.
- Fossil insects belong to the journal, with mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber specimens used to extend beetle lineages back into the Mesozoic.
- Molecular practice spans sequencing of standard gene markers, complete mitochondrial genomes and DNA barcoding, usually scored against a morphological dataset.
- Geometric morphometrics, larval and pupal anatomy and re-examination of type specimens are recurring methodological threads across the volumes.
- Biogeographic and phylogeographic interpretation accompanies many revisions, drawing on material from the Neotropical region, Australia, China, the Palearctic and the eastern Himalaya.
- Identification aids such as illustrated keys to ant subfamilies and genera are published when they serve working systematists.
History
- The predecessor Entomologica Scandinavica began in 1970 as a Scandinavian entomological periodical, and its volumes are registered today under the ISSNs of the successor title.
- That series reached volume 29 in 1998, and the successor title took up the sequence at volume 30, the volume citation databases date to 1999.
- Dropping the regional adjective from the title went with an opening of the content to world fauna, so submissions from the Neotropics and Australasia now share the pages with northern material.
- Volume-year correspondence remained regular afterwards, with volume 40 in 2009, volume 46 in 2015 and volume 56 in 2025, and a new volume opening each calendar year.
- Issue counts per volume run to four in most years and to five in several recent ones, while citation databases describe the frequency as quarterly.
- An editorial published in volume 40 marked 2009 as the year the forty-year-old periodical passed to Brill and first appeared online. [1]
- The imprint now sits with Brill in Leiden, and Crossref metadata records the publisher as Walter de Gruyter GmbH (Brill), reflecting the incorporation of Brill into the de Gruyter group.
- The identifiers registered for the present title are 1399-560X in print and 1876-312X in electronic form, and article DOIs sit under the Brill prefix 10.1163, which also covers the deposited backfile.
- Citation databases still note Denmark as the country of publication with an editorial address at Apollo Books in Stenstrup, the base that held the journal before Brill.
- The journal remains a subscription title, is absent from the Directory of Open Access Journals and recorded in OpenAlex as not open access, while JCR measured a gold open access share of 6.12 per cent for 2025.
- Reported impact factors moved from 1.304 in 2022 to 1.3 in 2023 and 1.4 in 2024 before reaching 1.9 in 2025, with the five-year figure at 1.4.
- In the 2025 edition of JCR the title stands 33rd of 110 journals in ENTOMOLOGY, a Q2 position, and 40th of 54 in EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY, a Q3 position.2025 年 JCR 中,该刊在 ENTOMOLOGY 类目列 110 种之第 33,属 Q2,在 EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY 列 54 种之第 40,属 Q3。
- Output stays small, with 19 articles counted for 2025 against 468 citations received in the same year, an immediacy factor of 0.5 and a cited half-life of 11.9 years.
- Scopus indexes the journal under the subject groups Insect Science and Ecology, Evolution, Behavior and Systematics, the latter of which hosts its CiteScore series.
Editors
- The editor-in-chief is Hojun Song, an orthopterist who joined the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University in 2025 after years on the faculty of Texas A&M University.主编为 Hojun Song,专业方向是直翅目系统学,2025 年自 Texas A&M University 转往 Arizona State University 的生命科学学院。
- His own research documents diversity and evolutionary relationships among grasshoppers, katydids and crickets, and it uses swarming locusts to probe phenotypic plasticity.
- Manuscripts reach the editorial office through the Editorial Manager submission system operated for the journal, and no paper-based route is offered.
- The published scope statement works as a desk-screening rule, because the material the editors decline is named there in advance.
- Reviewers are sought among specialists in the order under discussion, and the editors issue decisions on the strength of the reports they receive.
- Publication language is English, and papers carry abundant figures, with type specimens and habitus photographs shown next to the descriptive text.
- Comment, reply and erratum items have a place in the journal, so a systematic conclusion published in one volume can be challenged in a later one.
- Front matter and back matter are deposited as separate records for each volume, so the volume opens and closes with material that belongs to no single article.
- Because the editors favour synthesis, a review is expected to address a readership wider than the specialist group it summarises.
- Editorial continuity with the predecessor title is preserved in the identifier records, which route every volume from 1970 onwards to the same journal entry.
