Earth Syst. Sci.)
Scope
The journal encourages and supports fundamental and applied research that advances understanding of hydrological systems, of their role in providing water for ecosystems and society, and of the role of the water cycle in the functioning of the Earth system. A multi-disciplinary approach is encouraged that broadens the hydrological perspective and advances hydrological science through integration with cognate sciences and cross-fertilisation across disciplinary boundaries. HESS therefore serves not only the hydrological science community but all earth and life scientists, water engineers and water managers.

The journal operates a two-stage open-access model. Submitted preprints are posted openly on the union's preprint platform for public discussion and peer review, and accepted final papers then appear in the journal. Articles are freely available to all readers on publication, the publisher charges no fees to authors, and all content is released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence.
History
- 1997: the journal was founded. The editorial in volume 1 issue 1 set out the rationale for hydrology as a geoscience standing alongside atmospheric, ocean and solid earth sciences. That positioning was strongly influenced by Opportunities in the Hydrologic Sciences published by the US National Academy Press in 1991, and the journal was expected to become a major forum for the publication and discussion of such research.1997年:期刊创刊,卷首社论给出了把水文学确立为与大气科学、海洋科学和固态地球科学并列的独立地球科学的理由,该定位受到 1991 年美国国家科学院出版社《水科学的机会》一书的直接影响,并期望本刊成为此类研究发表与讨论的主要论坛*
- Founding editor: Erwin Zehe of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology served as Executive Editor from the founding of the journal. Editorial responsibility has rotated many times since then, and he is still listed among the editors in his capacity as a founding Executive Editor.
- Around 2001: the European Geosciences Union began promoting interactive open-access publishing, providing the institutional background for the journal's move from print to the web. Copernicus Publications, the union's commercial publishing house, took on the publication of the journal.2001年前后:欧洲地球科学联盟开始推行交互式开放获取出版,为该刊从纸质走向网络提供了制度背景,哥白尼出版公司作为联盟的商业出版机构承接了刊物的发行*
- 2005: the journal moved from print issues to fully web-based open access and introduced an open discussion style of peer review. Huub Savenije described the change in the editorial of the day as following the successful developments of other communities, in particular high-energy physics, and stressed that the new forum would make participation easier for young scientists.2005年:该刊从纸质期刊转为完全基于网络的开放获取,并引入公开讨论式的同行评审机制,Huub Savenije 在当时的社论中把这一转变称为向高能物理界成功做法的借鉴,并强调新机制有助于年轻学者参与*
- The 2010s: open preprint discussion became a permanent part of the workflow, and collections and opinion features such as HESS Opinions appeared in large numbers. The journal ran on a structure of Executive Editors plus several dozen topical editors, who were free to choose the manuscripts they handled and to give their independent final opinions.2010年代:预印本公开讨论成为常设环节,专刊与观点专栏(如 HESS Opinions)大量出现,编辑团队以执行主编加数十位领域编辑的结构运行,各编辑可自由选择稿件并独立给出最终意见*
- Recent years: preprint discussion has been consolidated into the union's single preprint server. The journal reached volume 30 in 2026, continues to operate as a community-driven not-for-profit publication, and has signed institutional open-access agreements with universities in countries including Sweden and Norway.
Editors
The journal is run collectively by its Executive Editors, four of whom currently share responsibility for its direction. Below them several dozen topical editors indicate their subject areas, such as global hydrology, groundwater hydrology, vadose zone hydrology, ecohydrology, rivers and lakes, water resources management and hydrometeorology. Guest editors look after collections. Editors may choose the manuscripts they wish to handle and give their own independent opinions on them.
- Executive editors: the four current Executive Editors are Theresa Blume of the German Research Centre for Geosciences, Alberto Guadagnini of Politecnico di Milano in Italy, Thom Bogaard of Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and Hilary McMillan of San Diego State University in the United States. Blume has been a topical editor of the journal since 2012 and an Executive Editor since 2017.
