Huaqiao University

Huaqiao University is a public university with campuses in Quanzhou and Xiamen in Fujian Province, China, and it reports to the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China.华侨大学是一所公立大学，在福建泉州与厦门两地办学，直属中共中央统一战线工作部领导，是中华人民共和国成立后专门为华侨青年创办的综合性大学。

Founded in 1960 to educate young people of Chinese descent from Southeast Asia, it shares with Jinan University in Guangzhou the role of a national institution for students from outside mainland China.该校1960年为培养东南亚华侨青年而创办，与广州的暨南大学同属面向中国大陆以外学生的国立侨校，长期承担华侨华人教育的任务。

The university runs 28 colleges and more than 80 research institutes and teaches both mainland students and students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and 29 other countries and regions.学校设有28个学院和80余个研究机构，同时招收内地学生以及来自香港、澳门、台湾和29个其他国家与地区的学生，形成一校两生的办学格局。

History

After the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, young Chinese from overseas returned to study on the mainland in large numbers, and by 1957 the returned students enrolled in Chinese schools had reached more than 40,000.1949年中华人民共和国成立后，大批华侨青年回国求学，到1957年回国求学的华侨青年已达到四万余人，安置与升学成为当时侨务工作的紧迫问题。
In 1959 the Central Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission drafted a proposal to create a university for these students, signed by Liao Chengzhi and submitted to the State Council for study and approval.1959年，中央华侨事务委员会为解决大量侨生深造的问题起草了创办华侨大学的方案，由廖承志亲自签署后呈送国务院研究批准。
In April 1960 a joint meeting of the commission and the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese weighed Beijing, Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou and Zhangzhou before settling on Quanzhou as the site of the new campus.1960年4月，中央华侨事务委员会召开全体委员会议并与全国侨联常委联席会议，在北京、广州、福州、厦门、泉州、漳州等城市之间反复比较后确定在泉州创办华侨大学。
Xie Baiqiu, then a secretary of the Fuzhou municipal party committee, was placed in charge of preparations, and a preparatory office was opened under the Jinjiang prefectural party committee once the site was fixed.时任福州市委书记处书记谢白秋主持华侨大学筹备工作，校址确定后晋江地委随即成立华侨大学筹备处。
In September 1960 the school enrolled 84 Chinese-language students on borrowed premises at Fuzhou Normal College and 196 preparatory students at the Jimei remedial school in Xiamen.1960年9月，学校借用福州师范学院校舍招收84名中文系学生，同时在厦门集美补习学校招收196名预科生。
Teaching began in October 1960, and on 1 November 1961 the State Council formally approved the institution, which still dates its anniversary to 1 November 1960.学校于1960年10月正式上课，1961年11月1日国务院正式批准办学，校庆日由此定为1960年11月1日并沿用至今。
In 1962 the first teaching building was completed and the school moved to its Quanzhou site, adding departments of politics, physics, medicine, art and tropical and subtropical crops.1962年教学楼建成，学校迁入建设中的泉州本部，并增设政治、物理、医疗、艺术和热带亚热带作物5个系7个专业。
In April 1963 the cornerstone of the Chen Jiageng Memorial Hall was laid in honour of the Jimei philanthropist, and Wei Que was appointed acting president of the university.1963年4月，为纪念集美教育家陈嘉庚而兴建的大礼堂奠基，同年韦悫被任命为华侨大学代理校长。
In 1965 the tropical crops department moved in two groups to the Xinglong overseas Chinese farm on Hainan Island, where students combined study with farm work.1965年8月，热带作物系分两批迁往海南岛兴隆华侨农场办学，师生在农场实行半工半读。
In May 1966 the Cultural Revolution reached the campus, classes were suspended, and the unfinished memorial hall stood idle for more than a decade.1966年5月，文化大革命波及校园，学校停课，未完工的陈嘉庚纪念堂此后十余年一直处于停工状态。
On 17 January 1970 the Fujian Provincial Revolutionary Committee issued a notice abolishing the university, and Fujian Medical University took over the Quanzhou site the same year.1970年1月17日，福建省革命委员会正式发出撤销华侨大学的通知，福建医科大学于同年接管泉州校址。
The library, laboratories and teaching staff were dispersed to other universities and local governments, while a small caretaker office kept the campus until the university was restored.图书、设备与师资被分散到其他高校和地方政府，学校仅留留守处看管校园，直至1978年复办。
On 17 April 1978 the State Council approved the restoration of the university on its original site, and three programmes reopened in September 1978 with civil engineering taught temporarily at Fuzhou University.1978年4月17日，国务院批准在原址复办华侨大学，首批三个专业于当年9月开学，其中土木建筑系暂借福州大学上课。
The university held its reopening ceremony on 23 October 1978 and began preparing a board of directors to raise funds among overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia.1978年10月23日，学校举行复办挂牌仪式，并着手筹建面向东南亚华侨华人社会募资的董事会。
The board of directors was established on 8 January 1980, and in May 1980 Liao Chengzhi was approved to serve concurrently as president of the university.1980年1月8日华侨大学董事会成立，同年5月中央批准廖承志兼任华侨大学校长，学校的侨务色彩由此进一步确定。
On 20 June 1983 the university was designated a national key supported institution, and in October 1983 the Chen Jiageng Memorial Hall was completed and Ye Fei became president.1983年6月20日，学校被确定为国家重点扶植大学，同年10月陈嘉庚纪念堂竣工，叶飞出任华侨大学校长。
A university hospital opened in 1985, the same year the law department was created to train lawyers for Fujian and for overseas Chinese communities abroad.1985年华侨大学校医院正式成立，同年学校创办法律系，为福建和海外华侨华人社会培养法律人才。
In 1988 the university helped to establish Yang'en College in Quanzhou, which became an independent institution in July 1989 and left the Huaqiao system.1988年学校受福建省教委委托协助创办仰恩学院，该学院于1989年7月独立建制，脱离华侨大学。
The Qiaozong Library, the main library of the Quanzhou campus, came into use in November 1990 and still houses the university's principal collection.泉州校区的主图书馆侨总图书馆于1990年11月投入使用，至今仍是学校藏书最为集中的馆舍。
In February 1997 the State Council Overseas Chinese Affairs Office merged the Jimei Chinese School into the university as its Jimei Chinese Language Education Centre.1997年2月，国务院侨务办公室将集美侨校成建制并入华侨大学，成立集美华文教育中心，专门承担华文教育职能。
In 2000 the economics and management departments were consolidated into a business school, and the men's basketball team won its second national university title.2000年，工商管理、旅游、管理信息与国际经济等系合并成立经济管理学院，校男篮则夺得第二个中国大学生篮球联赛总冠军。
Construction of the Xiamen campus started in 2004, when the university also created separate schools of business, tourism, civil engineering, architecture and humanities.厦门校区于2004年动工，同年学校拆分组建商学院、旅游学院、土木工程学院、建筑学院和人文与公共管理学院。

Academics

The university is organised into 28 colleges and more than 80 research institutes, covering science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, law, literature, philosophy, history, agriculture, education and art.学校设有28个学院和80余个研究机构，学科覆盖理、工、医、经、管、法、文、哲、史、农、教育和艺术12大门类。

The Chinese Language and Culture College in Jimei descends from the Jimei school for returned overseas Chinese that Tan Kah Kee founded in 1953 at the request of the State Council.位于集美的华文学院前身为陈嘉庚1953年受国务院委托创办的集美华侨学生补习学校，主要招收华侨学生与华裔青年。

Campus

The Quanzhou campus, the registered seat of the university, covers 740,000 square metres with 550,000 square metres of floor space.泉州校区是学校的注册地，占地74万平方米，校舍建筑面积55万平方米。

The Chen Jiageng Memorial Hall, completed in October 1983, is the ceremonial centre of the Quanzhou campus and hosts the university's major assemblies.1983年10月落成的陈嘉庚纪念堂是泉州校区的礼仪中心，学校重大集会与庆典均在此举行。

Student life

Students are divided into mainland students and overseas students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and foreign countries, a system the university calls one campus with two student bodies.学生分为境内生与境外生两类，前者指中国大陆学生，后者包括港澳台学生和外国学生，学校称之为一校两生。

Notable people

Liao Chengzhi, a vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, served as president of the university from 1980 until his death in 1983.廖承志曾任全国人民代表大会常务委员会副委员长，1980年起兼任华侨大学校长，直至1983年逝世。
Ye Fei, a general of the People's Liberation Army and former governor of Fujian, became president in October 1983.叶飞是中国人民解放军上将，曾任福建省省长，1983年10月出任华侨大学校长。
Wei Que, an educationist who had worked in the national education administration, was acting president during the campus expansion of 1963.韦悫是曾在国家教育行政部门任职的教育家，1963年校园扩张期间担任华侨大学代理校长。
Xie Baiqiu, a secretary of the Fuzhou municipal party committee, organised the founding preparations of 1960 and the first enrolment.谢白秋时任福州市委书记处书记，主持了1960年的建校筹备与首次招生。
