HortScience
HortScience is a peer-reviewed open access journal of the American Society for Horticultural Science, a society that has represented horticultural research in the United States since 1903. It was founded in 1966 and publishes applied and fundamental work on fruit, vegetable, ornamental, turf and landscape crops. The 2025 Journal Impact Factor is 1.9, with the journal ranked 23rd of 45 titles in the horticulture category and a five-year value of 2.1.《园艺科学》是美国园艺学会出版的同行评审开放获取期刊,该学会自 1903 年起就是美国园艺研究的行业组织。
Scope
- The stated goal is plain: to apprise horticultural scientists and others interested in horticulture of scientific and industry developments and of significant research, education or extension findings or methods.
- That remit is deliberately wide, so a single volume mixes greenhouse trials, orchard management, postharvest storage work and reports on classroom or extension practice.
- Plant breeding, genetics and germplasm evaluation take up a large share of the pages, including descriptions of new cultivars and the trial data that support their release.
- Production papers deal with irrigation, mineral nutrition, substrates, planting density, pruning and the design of protected cultivation for field and greenhouse growers.
- Postharvest physiology and handling run from harvest maturity and cooling through storage atmosphere, shelf life and quality loss along the supply chain.
- Environmental stress physiology, growth regulation, flowering and root development appear regularly, usually with an eye to what a grower can change in the field.
- Integrated management of insects, mites, nematodes and diseases is treated as part of production practice, with weight on cultivar resistance, scouting thresholds and lower chemical input.
- Fruit and nut crops, vegetables, bedding plants, cut flowers, nursery stock, turfgrass and landscape plantings each carry their own stream of papers.
- Propagation from seed, cuttings and tissue culture, transplant production and the care of young plants close the loop on the production side.
- Extension and education articles report methods already tested with growers or students, a category few horticulture journals still keep open.
- Cultivar and germplasm releases appear as short structured papers that record parentage, distinguishing traits, performance across locations and conditions of availability.
- Workshop and colloquium papers from the society's annual conference are gathered into themed groups inside normal issues rather than into separate supplements.
- Reports on experimental design, statistics and measurement technique also find a place, since experiment stations repeat trials under local conditions and publish the comparison.
- Topics that have gained space in recent years include water and nutrient efficiency, soilless culture, urban horticulture and the recycling of organic residues.
- The readership the journal names is broad: researchers at universities and experiment stations, extension specialists, teachers and the industry that supplies seed, media and equipment.
History
- HortScience began in 1966, when the American Society for Horticultural Science issued volume 1, and a straight sequence of volumes has followed, reaching volume 60 in 2025.《园艺科学》创办于 1966 年,美国园艺学会当年推出第 1 卷,此后卷号连续未断,2025 年出至第 60 卷。
- Its arrival divided the society's publishing in two, because the Proceedings of the American Society for Horticultural Science had carried members' papers since 1903.
- That older series became the Journal of the American Society for Horticultural Science in 1969, and the two titles have run side by side ever since, one for fundamental work and one for a wider readership.
- The present title has never been altered, so the journal carries no former name: HortScience has stood on the cover from the first issue onwards.
- Publishing has stayed in the society's hands as well. The journal is issued from the ASHS office in Alexandria, Virginia, and has not passed to a commercial house.
- From the start the journal aimed at horticulturists who would not read a purely research title, so short reports on methods and industry developments sat beside full papers.
- Issue numbering has run without a break, and a volume now carries twelve numbered issues, assembled around a continuous stream of articles posted online.
- Online delivery changed the reach of the journal, because accepted papers go up on the society's journals platform as soon as they are ready rather than waiting for an issue to close.
- Open access followed. Every article is free to read in full, and the 2025 Journal Citation Reports classifies the whole citable output as gold open access.
- An electronic ISSN, 2327-9834, covers the online edition and sits alongside the original 0018-5345, which remains the number quoted in most citations and indexes.
- Citation totals are high for a specialist title. The 2025 figures record more than 12,900 citations and a cited half-life of 14.5 years, which points to long use of older cultivar and culture papers.
- The impact factor has moved inside a narrow band, from 1.455 in 2021 and 1.874 in 2022 to 1.9 in 2025, while the five-year value stands at 2.1.
- Around 285 research items were published in the 2025 counting year, which keeps the journal among the larger horticulture titles by output.2025
- In the 2025 ranking it sits 23rd of 45 in horticulture, a middle position in a category now crowded with crop-specific and molecular titles.2025
- The society turned one hundred in 2003, and the journal marked the anniversary with a long review of a century of horticultural science by Jules Janick and Irwin L. Goldman.
Editors
- Editorial work is done in house. The editorial office shares the Alexandria headquarters with HortTechnology and the Journal of the ASHS, and the three titles draw on one production team.
- An editor-in-chief sets the line of the journal and answers to the society's publications governance, while subject editors take manuscripts in their own fields.
- The subject editors divide along the sections the journal runs, covering breeding and genetics, production and culture, postharvest handling, plant protection, propagation and statistics.
- Manuscripts enter through the society's online submission system, which HortScience shares with the other two ASHS journals, so a single set of author instructions governs all three.
- A handling editor picks the reviewers, usually two or more, and writes the decision. Authors deal with that editor rather than with the board as a whole.
- Cultivar and germplasm releases get a separate check on nomenclature and on the performance data behind the release, which is why they read differently from research papers.
- Extension and education papers are judged on usefulness to growers, advisers and teachers as well as on method, and single-station trials are not excluded for their scope alone.
- Statistical review carries weight because most papers rest on field trials. Authors must state the design, the replication and the analysis used, and a weak design draws comment at review.
- Members are drawn mainly from North American land-grant universities and federal research services, with a smaller number from Europe, Asia and Latin America.
- Authors declare funding and competing interests, and the society applies the usual rules on authorship, data retention and duplicate submission.
- Production stays with the society as well: copy-editing, typesetting and DOI registration are handled under the ASHS imprint rather than by an outside platform owner.
