Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) is a private liberal arts university on Braemar Hill in North Point, on Hong Kong Island, and it is the first private university recognised by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.香港树仁大学是一所位于香港岛北角宝马山的私立文科大学，是香港特别行政区政府承认的第一所私立大学。

Founded in 1971 as Hong Kong Shue Yan College by the barrister Henry Hu Hung-lick and the educationist Chung Chi-yung, it was renamed a university on 19 December 2006 and admitted more than 1,800 new students in 2025-2026.该校由大律师胡鸿烈与教育家钟期荣于 1971 年创办，初名香港树仁书院，2006 年 12 月 19 日正名为大学，2025-2026 学年录取新生超过 1,800 名。

It offers more than 20 undergraduate programmes and a range of master's and doctoral degrees across four faculties, and its motto, "Dun ren bo wu", calls for benevolence and broad learning.学校设 4 个学院，开设 20 多个本科课程以及多个硕士与博士课程，校训「敦仁博物」意在培养仁德与广博的学识。

History

• Hong Kong Shue Yan College was founded on 20 September 1971 by Henry Hu Hung-lick, then a Legislative Councillor and barrister, and Chung Chi-yung, a prominent educationist.香港树仁书院于 1971 年 9 月 20 日由时任立法局议员、大律师胡鸿烈与著名教育家钟期荣创办。
• Chung resigned from her post as head of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of the Hong Kong Baptist College and at first planned to open a kindergarten.钟期荣辞去香港浸会学院文学及社会科学院院长一职，起初计划创办一所幼稚园。
• Her husband Hu suggested founding a university instead, and invested his earnings as a barrister, buying a three-storey house at 81 Sing Woo Road in Happy Valley for HK$700,000 as classrooms.她的丈夫胡鸿烈主张改办大学，并把做大律师所得投入办学，以 70 万港元买下跑马地成和道 81 号一栋三层小楼作为课室。
• The founders worried that tertiary education in Hong Kong was available to less than 2 percent of the relevant age group and that the Cultural Revolution might undermine traditional Chinese values.创办人担忧当时香港的高等教育仅覆盖相关年龄组不足 2% 的人口，也担心文化大革命会冲击传统中国文化价值。
• In January 1976, after review by the education authorities, the college was registered under the Post Secondary Colleges Ordinance and renamed Hong Kong Shue Yan College.1976 年 1 月，经教育部门评审后，书院按《专上学院条例》注册并更名为香港树仁学院。
• In 1978 the Hong Kong government granted a piece of land on Braemar Hill for a permanent campus, and because of the steep slope 176 piles were driven to support the building.1978 年，香港政府拨出宝马山部分土地作为永久校址，因地势陡斜，需打下 176 条地桩才能建成校舍。
• The founders invested nearly HK$100 million, and the twelve-storey campus building was completed, with classes beginning on 23 September 1985.创办人投入近一亿港元，建成楼高十二层的校舍，并于 1985 年 9 月 23 日起正式上课。
• The government proposed in 1978 that Shue Yan, Baptist College and Lingnan College adopt a two-two-one system with public funding, but Chung refused in order to keep the four-year degree.1978 年政府建议树仁、浸会与岭南三所专上学院改行「二、二、一」制并由政府资助，但钟期荣婉拒，以维持四年制学位。
• In 1988 an education report recommended a unified three-year British-style university system, and colleges that refused it would lose government funding and degree approval.1988 年的一份教育报告建议各专上院校统一采用英式三年制大学模式，否则将不获政府资助及批准开办学位课程。

• A ceremony marking the university title was held on 14 February 2007, and in January 2007 the government offered a one-time grant of HK$200 million for a development fund.2007 年 2 月 14 日举行正名典礼；2007 年 1 月，政府一次性拨款 2 亿港元，为大学设立发展基金。

• The founding supervisor Henry Hu died on 27 July 2025 at the age of 105, and his son Hu Fai-chung was appointed acting president on 1 August 2025 and president on 9 February 2026.创校校监胡鸿烈于 2025 年 7 月 27 日辞世，享寿 105 岁；其子胡怀中于 2025 年 8 月 1 日获委任为署任校长，并于 2026 年 2 月 9 日出任校长。

• Academic departments at HKSYU are grouped into four faculties, covering arts, commerce, social sciences and the newer faculty of communication, information and creative industries.树仁大学的学系分属 4 个学院，涵盖文学院、商学院、社会科学院以及新设的传理与资讯及创意产业学院。

• The land was granted by the Hong Kong government in 1978, and the Education and Administration Complex, the first building, was completed in 1985.校地由香港政府于 1978 年拨出，首座建筑教学行政大楼于 1985 年建成。
• The Education and Administration Complex is about eleven storeys high and houses classrooms, computer rooms, lecture halls, a ceremony hall, sports facilities and staff offices.教学行政大楼楼高约十一层，内设课室、电脑室、演讲厅、礼堂、运动设施与教员办公室。
