Hohai University

Hohai University (HHU) is a public research university in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China, whose name means river and sea in Chinese, and it is best known for hydrology, water resources, hydraulic engineering, coastal engineering and marine engineering.河海大学是中国江苏省南京市的一所公立研究型大学，校名取「河海」二字，以水文、水资源、水利工程、海岸工程与海洋工程见长。

It is affiliated with the Ministry of Education, co-sponsored by the Ministry of Water Resources and the Jiangsu provincial government, and is part of the Double First-Class initiative and Project 211.学校由教育部主管，与水利部及江苏省人民政府共建，是国家「双一流」建设高校与「211 工程」高校。

Founded in 1915 as the first Chinese institution for training water conservancy talent, it enrolled 57,215 degree students by February 2026, including 18,370 postgraduates and 22,506 undergraduates.该校创办于 1915 年，是中国第一所培养水利人才的高等学府；截至 2026 年 2 月，各类学历教育学生达 57,215 名，其中研究生 18,370 名、本科生 22,506 名。

History

• Hohai University traces its origin to the Hohai Civil Engineering School, founded in Nanjing in 1915 by the industrialist and educator Zhang Jian, the first Chinese institution for training water conservancy talent.河海大学的前身是 1915 年由爱国实业家、教育家张謇在南京创办的河海工程专门学校，是中国第一所培养水利人才的高等学府。
• Huang Yanpei served as the head of the school's preparatory committee, Xu Zhaonan was its first principal, and the hydraulic engineer Li Yizhi was its academic director.黄炎培任河海专门学校筹备主任，许肇南任第一任校长，近代水利专家李仪祉出任学校教务主任。
• The Communist revolutionaries Zhang Wentian and Shen Zemin studied at the school, setting out from it on their revolutionary careers.无产阶级革命家张闻天、沈泽民曾在河海求学，并从这里走上革命道路。
