Gems & Gemology
Gems & Gemology is the quarterly journal of the Gemological Institute of America, a nonprofit educational organization for the gem and jewelry industry, and it has published research on gem materials, synthetics and identification methods since 1934. Its 2025 Journal Impact Factor is 2.4, a second-quartile position in mineralogy.《宝石与宝石学》是美国宝石研究院(Gemological Institute of America)出版的季刊,该院是服务宝石与珠宝行业的非营利教育机构。
Scope
- The journal welcomes submissions on all aspects of the field, and the remit reaches from laboratory bench work to the commercial and historical sides of the gem trade.
- Laboratory or field research heads the list of topics, which puts bench work and fieldwork on the same footing.
- Notable gem materials and localities come next, a slot that takes in new finds along with long-known sources.
- Synthetics, imitations and treatments form the third topic, a cluster that runs from laboratory-grown stones to treated ones.
- New instruments or identification techniques are named as a topic in their own right, giving method papers their own slot.
- Trade and business matters also belong to the scope, and the list ends with jewelry manufacturing arts and with historical jewelry and museum exhibits.
- Gem News International runs brief reports capped at four figures and one thousand words, keeping short field notices inside the journal.Gem News International
- Micro-World allows one or two figures and six hundred words, and the slot is built around photomicrography of inclusions and internal features.
- Lab Notes prints reports written by staff of the GIA laboratory, so a routine identification result can reach print without a full research article.Lab Notes
- Colored Stones Unearthed and Diamond Reflections carry their own editors and a fixed theme, the first on colored gemstones and the second on diamonds.
- From the Field and Charts are followed by In the Spotlight, and the guidelines treat all of these departments as edited but not peer reviewed. From the Field 与 Charts 之后还有 In the Spotlight,作者指南把这些栏目一律视为经编辑审读而不做同行评审的部分。
- A manuscript may therefore aim at a full research article or at one of the shorter departments, and the two routes differ in how deeply the work is read.
- The masthead describes the publisher as a nonprofit educational organization for the gem and jewelry industry, which places the journal inside a teaching body rather than a commercial press.
History
- Robert M. Shipley founded the Gemological Institute of America in 1931, and the institute has remained the publisher of the journal ever since.1931 年 Robert M. Shipley 创办美国宝石研究院,该院此后一直是本刊的出版方。

- Volume numbers do not map one volume onto every calendar year, so the volume printed on a 2026 issue cannot be used to count back to the founding date.
- The summer 2026 issue is Volume 62, Number 2, and a volume now takes in four numbers spread across a single year on a quarterly schedule.2026

- The digital backfile in Crossref opens at Volume 17, Issue 4, dated 1981, which marks the start of the scanned archive and not the start of the journal.
- The journal is abstracted in Current Contents: Physical, Chemical & Earth Sciences and in Science Citation Index Expanded, and Chemical Abstracts, GeoRef and Mineralogical Abstracts appear on the same list.
- The 2025 Journal Impact Factor is 2.4 and the five-year figure matches it, both taken from the Journal Citation Reports released in June 2026.2025
- Journal Citation Reports ranks the title 12th of 30 in mineralogy, a Q2 place in the Science Citation Index Expanded edition.
- Four earlier readings run 2.045 for 2022, 1.6 for 2023, 2.6 for 2024 and 2.4 for 2025, a line that rises and falls rather than climbing steadily.
- Annual output comes to about twelve articles, total citations stand near 962 and a cited half-life of 11.4 years points to a literature that turns over slowly.
- Crossref records for 2026 list Volume 61, Issue 4 beside Volume 62, Issues 1 and 2, which shows the quarterly run continuing without gaps.
- The copyright line names the institute itself rather than an outside press, and the serial is registered under ISSN 0016-626X for print with 2376-4473 for the electronic edition.
