Frontiers of Biogeography
Frontiers of Biogeography is the open-access scientific journal of the International Biogeography Society, published on the society's behalf by Pensoft since 1 July 2024 and founded in 2009. It covers the geography of life at every scale, appears continuously online, and holds a 2025 Journal Impact Factor of 2.4.《生物地理学前沿》是国际生物地理学会的开放获取科学期刊,2009 年创刊,2024 年 7 月 1 日起由 Pensoft 代表学会出版,覆盖各个尺度上生命的地理格局,以连续方式在线发布,2025 年期刊影响因子为 2.4。
Scope
- The aims define the field broadly as the study of geographical variation in life at all levels of organisation, so a paper on genes, on species or on biomes can all qualify provided that space is central to the argument.
- Temporal and evolutionary variation counts when it carries a geographical perspective, which is how phylogeography and historical reconstruction enter the journal without needing a section of their own.
- Small-scale studies are not excluded by size, only by the absence of a spatially explicit component in the design or in the analysis of the study.
- All taxa and all realms are taken in, marine, aquatic and terrestrial alike, and the journal's own taxonomy sorts published work by region as well as by theme.
- The named branches run from ecological and evolutionary biogeography through phylogeography, conservation, applied, island and functional biogeography to the historical strand.
- Schools of thought and methodology are left open, so classical range mapping and model-based inference are expected to meet inside one volume rather than in separate journals.
- Article formats are deliberately flexible, since research articles, perspectives, reviews and syntheses, correspondence, book reviews and editorials all have a place in the pages.
- Teaching of biogeography at university level is admissible subject matter, though the journal advises a pre-submission enquiry before a manuscript on pedagogy is prepared.
- The society frames the journal as an independent forum for the discipline, run to academic rather than commercial standards and open to submissions from any branch.
- Book reviews appear often enough to form a recognisable slice of the contents, and they are indexed alongside the research papers rather than kept in a separate file.
- Notices from the society, meeting announcements and conference reports run beside the scholarship, which keeps the journal tied to the community that owns it.
- Software contributions have appeared in the form of package papers, among them an R package for reconstructing biogeographic shifts and one for exploring phylogenetic eigenvectors across metacommunities.
- Thesis abstracts were printed in the early volumes, giving doctoral graduates a short citable record, a feature that has since given way to the standard article formats.
- Every article is published under a Creative Commons Attribution licence, so the whole archive can be reused with attribution and without any subscription or registration.
History
- The International Biogeography Society launched the journal in 2009, with volume 1 appearing in the same year, and the National Library of Medicine dates its holdings from that volume.
- The society is a not-for-profit body devoted to the promotion and public understanding of biogeography, and the journal was meant to give its scattered membership a citable record.
- For its first fifteen years the journal was hosted on eScholarship, the University of California's open publishing platform, which gave a small society title a stable address.
- Volumes 2 to 16 were divided into four issues as a rule, although a few years carried two or five, and citations still use the volume and issue numbers of that period.
- From volume 17 in 2024 the journal dropped issue numbers altogether, and articles now carry their own numbers and DOIs from the moment they are published.
- Publication moved to Pensoft on 1 July 2024, and Crossref now records the imprint as Frontiers of Biogeography - Pensoft Publishers, a name that spans both the society and the platform.
- The move brought the title onto the ARPHA platform, with fully searchable text, social media interfaces and dissemination aimed specifically at biogeographers.
- Articles are now published continuously throughout the year rather than held back for an issue, a change that the publisher states plainly on the journal's about page.
- One ISSN, 1948-6596, serves the title, and the publisher lists it as the online identifier, there being no separate print edition of the journal.
- The title is indexed in the Emerging Sources Citation Index and in Scopus, and also in the Web of Science's BIOSIS, Biological Abstracts and Zoological Record databases.
- The 2025 Journal Citation Reports place it in the third quartile of both ecology, at 106 of 205, and physical geography, at 36 of 71.2025 年期刊引证报告把刊物列在生态学 205 种中的第 106 位、自然地理学 71 种中的第 36 位,两个类目均属第三四分位。
- The impact factor stood at 2.5 in 2024 and 2.4 in 2025, against a Journal Citation Indicator of 0.55 and a cited half-life of 5.3 years.
- Output runs to about 29 articles a year, total citations have reached 806, and 94.38 percent of the 2025 content was recorded as gold open access.
- Scopus gives a CiteScore of 5.7 for 2025 and a tracker figure of 8.1 for 2026, while the journal's h5-index stands at 18 and its SNIP at 0.981.Scopus
- Coverage in PubMed has stayed partial, since the National Library of Medicine takes only selected citations, and the title has never changed its name since launch.
Editors
- Robert Whittaker of the University of Oxford is Editor-in-Chief, having previously edited Global Ecology and Biogeography and, for eleven years, the Journal of Biogeography.主编为牛津大学的(Robert Whittaker),他此前主编过 Global Ecology and Biogeography,并在 Journal of Biogeography 任主编十一年。
