Fottea
Fottea is an international peer-reviewed journal devoted to algae and cyanobacteria, published by Palacký University Olomouc on behalf of the Czech Phycological Society. Its present series opened with volume 7 in 2007, and two issues appear each year. The 2025 Journal Impact Factor is 1.9, which places the title in the third quartile of the JCR PLANT SCIENCES category at rank 145 of 285.《Fottea》是面向藻类与蓝细菌的国际同行评审刊物,由 Palacký University Olomouc 代表捷克藻类学会(Czech Phycological Society)出版。
Scope
- The journal sets out to cover all aspects of the ecology, physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, systematics and uses of algae, with cyanobacteria explicitly included in that remit.
- Nothing in the stated scope confines submissions to a single algal class, so green algae, diatoms, euglenoids, red algae and cyanobacteria are all admissible, provided the work is sound.
- No geographical limit is imposed either, and material from European waters sits beside studies of tropical, polar and freshwater habitats on other continents, often from the same issue.
- Systematic work forms a large part of the contents, including revisions of genera, descriptions of new species and the formal nomenclatural acts that accompany such papers in the journal.
- Molecular papers use ribosomal and plastid sequence data to test species boundaries, reconstruct phylogenies and align genetic divergence with the morphological characters that traditional taxonomy relies on.
- Cell biology and ultrastructure are represented through light and electron microscopy, with attention to organelles, cell walls, silica frustules and other features that separate closely related taxa.
- Ecological contributions examine the dynamics of populations and communities, the physical and chemical conditions that shape them, and the seasonal cycles governing algal abundance in lakes, streams and reservoirs.
- Physiological studies address growth, photosynthesis, nutrient uptake and the responses of cells to light, temperature and desiccation stress, in laboratory culture as well as in field populations.
- Biochemical work covers pigments, lipids and secondary metabolites, often with an eye to the chemotaxonomic value of compounds that differ between closely related species and between populations of one species.
- Applied phycology appears in papers on algal biotechnology, wastewater treatment, bioindication and the management of blooms that affect drinking water and recreation, a recurring concern for water managers in the region.
- Floristic reports record a species for the first time in a country or region and are published when they extend the known distribution of a taxon rather than repeat earlier finds.
- Many papers combine field material with culture work, so that observations on living cells can be checked against the morphology seen in preserved samples and in published descriptions.
- All contributions appear in English, and authors who introduce new names for algae are expected to follow the current International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants.
- The editors read the scope broadly, and a submission is judged on whether it advances knowledge of algae rather than on the current fashion of the topic.
History
- The journal grew out of the bulletin Czech Phycology, whose numbering was carried over, so the first issue under the present title carries volume 7 and the date 2007.
- The founding body was the Czech Phycological Society, a professional association of researchers who study algae and cyanobacteria in the Czech Republic and in the neighbouring countries of Central Europe.
- Palacký University Olomouc appears as the publisher in the journal's registration records, while the society keeps its editorial office in Prague and names the people who handle submissions.
- The title commemorates Bohuslav Fott, a Czech phycologist whose monographs on flagellates and on the taxonomy of green algae shaped the study of freshwater algae in this country.
- One volume has appeared every year since 2007, each volume carrying two issues, the first in spring and the second in autumn, and the 2025 volume is the twenty-fifth.
- The change of title was tied to the society's aim of publishing an international journal in English rather than continuing a national bulletin issued for its own members.
- The journal is indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded, and its Journal Impact Factor has moved between 1.4 and 2.4 across the past four annual releases, with no clear direction.《Fottea》被 Science Citation Index Expanded 收录,过去 4 个年度版本的影响因子在 1.4 至 2.4 之间变动,未见明确走向。
- Successive annual figures were 2.429, then 1.5, then 1.4 and 1.9, a swing that follows the small number of papers published each year and the citation patterns of a specialised field.
- Output is small, roughly sixteen research papers a year in the most recent count, and the journal's total citations stand close to six hundred, so each paper carries a relatively heavy citation load.
- Every article is free to read, and the share of gold open access content reported for the title stands at one hundred per cent of the items published in the latest release.
- Each paper carries a DOI deposited with Crossref, and its metadata record gives the volume and issue in which the article appeared, so citations can be resolved through any standard linking service.
- The journal is the society's principal publishing activity, and it sits alongside the annual conference, determination courses and the Chantransia student meeting, which brings early-career phycologists together each year.
- The society belongs to the Federation of European Phycological Societies, which places the journal within a wider network of European algal research and gives its authors access to a broader readership.
- In bibliometric terms the title sits in the third quartile of the PLANT SCIENCES category of the Journal Citation Reports, at position 145 among the 285 journals listed in the 2025 release.
Editors
- Editorial authority rests with a board appointed by the Czech Phycological Society, and the society's officers answer for the journal to its members at the annual general meeting.
- Correspondence is directed to the society's address in Benátská Street, Prague 2, which the journal gives as its editorial contact in indexing records and in the printed issues.
- Manuscripts are handled through an online submission and tracking system rather than by post, and authors follow the system's file and format requirements before the editor assigns referees.
- Every research paper is sent to external referees before a decision is taken, and the editor weighs their reports against the journal's scope and the space available.
- Referees are chosen for familiarity with the group under study, so a paper on diatoms goes to diatom specialists and one on cyanobacteria to colleagues who work on them.
- Authors who propose new taxa must supply the descriptions, type designations and registration details that the nomenclature code requires, and the editors check them before the paper is accepted.
- Language is the author's responsibility, and a manuscript whose English obscures the science may be returned to the authors for revision before it is sent to referees at all.
- Novelty is weighed against the small annual output, so the board prefers papers that report genuinely new data to those that restate published findings with only cosmetic changes.
- Illustrations carry much of the argument in taxonomic papers, and the journal expects photographs and line drawings of a standard suitable for reproduction at the sizes used in print.
- The editorial board draws its members from Czech research institutions and from universities and museums abroad, in Europe and beyond, reflecting the international readership that the journal now addresses.
- Typesetting, production and printing are handled by Palacký University Olomouc, which also maintains the journal's registration and deposit records and supplies the digital files for long-term archiving.
- Authors are asked to correspond with the editorial office through the submission system, so that queries and decisions stay attached to the manuscript file and can be reviewed later by either side.
