Forest and Society
Forest and Society is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal published by the Faculty of Forestry at Hasanuddin University in Makassar, Indonesia, and devoted to the social study of forests and land across Southeast Asia.《森林与社会》是印度尼西亚望加锡哈桑丁大学(Hasanuddin University)林学院主办的开放获取同行评审期刊,关注东南亚森林与土地的社会研究。
It was launched in 2017 and has become one of the few English-language venues devoted specifically to Indonesian forest politics and to the communities that live with those forests.
Articles address governance, livelihoods and land use, and the readership spans university departments, non-governmental organisations and government agencies working on Indonesian forests.
Scope
- Work published here starts from the premise that forests are ecological objects and social products at once, shaped by law, custom, capital and administrative practice.
- Political ecology supplies much of the analytical vocabulary, and contributors are encouraged to connect empirical cases to wider debates about state power and resource control.
- Land and forest tenure sits at the centre of the programme, including statutory allocation and customary claims, as well as the everyday negotiation of access rights.
- Indonesia's social forestry programme, which reallocates state forest land to villages and community groups, receives sustained attention from both empirical and comparative angles.
- Customary institutions (adat) and village-level authority form a second cluster of interests, and the recognition of local rights runs through nearly every issue.
- Livelihoods research examines how households draw on timber, rattan and honey, on swidden plots and on wage work, often across several landscapes at the same time.
- Commodity frontiers attract close scrutiny, from oil palm expansion and pulpwood plantations to artisanal mining on forest margins and the labour regimes that accompany each of them.
- Conservation practice and protected-area governance are treated as social questions, with attention to displacement, co-management arrangements and the politics of wildlife encounters.
- Climate policy enters through studies of REDD+, of carbon accounting and of benefit sharing, and through work on how international finance reshapes village institutions.
- Peatland drainage, fire and haze recur as themes because they tie together plantation concessions, smallholder clearance and transboundary environmental governance.
- Administrative reorganisation after decentralisation, including village law and district licensing practice, is analysed with an eye to the gap between rule and implementation.
- Questions of gender, class and generation run through the empirical papers, as do the distributive effects of certification schemes and market-based instruments.
- Methodologically the journal favours long fieldwork, ethnography and participatory approaches, while remaining open to quantitative and mixed designs that address the same questions.
- Comparative work that sets Southeast Asian cases beside cases from Africa or Latin America is welcomed, provided the comparison carries substantive argument.
- Besides full research articles, the journal carries review essays, policy forums, short communications and book reviews that comment on current Indonesian and regional debates.
