Foot & Ankle International
Foot & Ankle International is the flagship journal of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society, published by SAGE, and its volume numbering runs back to 1980.《Foot & Ankle International》是美国骨科足踝学会(American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society)的旗舰刊,由 SAGE 出版,卷号可以一直追到 1980 年。
It prints clinical and biomedical research on the foot and ankle, from reconstructive surgery and trauma care to the sports injuries that occupy a large share of the specialty.
The 2025 impact factor is 2.3, the five-year figure 2.6, and the title holds 10,271 citations with a cited half-life of 12.2 years.2025 年影响因子 2.3,五年值 2.6,名下累计被引 10,271 次,被引半衰期 12.2 年。
Scope
- Reconstructive surgery is the largest block. Hallux valgus, adult flatfoot, ankle arthroplasty and the salvage of a failed fusion all fall inside it, with the radiographic measurement that goes with each.
- Trauma is treated as its own field, covering ankle and pilon fractures, Lisfranc injuries, talar neck fractures and the soft-tissue envelope that decides whether the bone heals.
- Sports injury takes up a good share of the file: Achilles tendon rupture, peroneal tendinopathy, osteochondral lesions of the talus and the return-to-play question that follows each.
- Clinical outcomes form the spine of the journal rather than a sideline, so registry data, patient-reported scores and complication rates are read as the substance of a paper.
- Basic science is accepted, on condition that the clinical relevance is stated in the paper, which keeps a biomechanics study from drifting away from the operating room.
- Clinical research must carry a level of evidence, and authors are expected to say plainly what that level is rather than leave readers to infer it.
- Clinical and biomedical manuscripts run to 3,000 words with a 300-word abstract, eight figures, four tables and no cap on references.
- Short scientific reports take 1,200 words, a 225-word abstract, three figures or tables in total and ten references, the format for one finding that does not need a long build-up.
- Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are capped at 3,000 words with a 250-word abstract, four figures and four tables, and they are read as evidence rather than as commentary.
- Contemporary reviews run to 4,000 words with no abstract and up to ten figures, which makes them the longest format the journal offers and the one closest to a teaching text.
- Letters to the editor are held to 400 words, one figure or table and five references, a form kept short so that replies to published work stay pointed.
- Several categories are refused outright. Case reports and technique tips are not taken, and neither are bibliography studies or papers that only translate an outcome instrument into another language.
- Qualitative and mixed-methods work is excluded as well, along with learning-curve papers, evaluations of language models and studies built on publicly obtained sports data.
- Statistics are held to a written standard, with authors referred to the JAMA Network guidance and to the CONSORT, STROBE, MOOSE and PRISMA checklists for the design they used.
- Peer review is double anonymized, so the reviewers do not see author names and the authors do not see who judged them, a policy that suits a small specialty where most people know each other.
History
- The journal began in 1980 under a shorter name, Foot & Ankle, and the society that founded it has owned the title ever since.
- Volume 1 is dated 1980 and volume 15 is dated 1994, which is the year the title changed to Foot & Ankle International. The volume count did not restart.
- Volume numbering is a subtraction: take the year and remove 1979. Volume 46 covers 2025 and volume 47 covers 2026, and the tenth issue of volume 47 is dated October 2026.
- The early name change is legible in the indexing record. MEDLINE and PubMed start at volume 15, number 1, in January 1994, and Index Medicus covered it on the same footing.
- Williams & Wilkins published it from Baltimore in the 1994 era. By 2013 the imprint had moved to Thousand Oaks, California, under SAGE, which has held it since.1994 年前后,刊物由 Williams & Wilkins 在巴尔的摩出版。
- Twelve issues a year is the arrangement, and it has been for a long stretch, so a monthly cadence carries roughly 155 articles annually.
- Five impact factors read 2.827, 3.569, 2.4, 2.2 and 2.3. The 2022 peak is now more than a point away, and the last two filings have been flat.
- The 2025 file places it 62nd of 147 titles in orthopaedics, at the 58.2nd percentile, with a JCI of 0.94 and 10,271 citations behind it.2025 年的表把它放在骨科类 147 种刊的第 62 位,百分位 58.2,JCI 0.94,身后累计被引 10,271 次。
- A cited half-life of 12.2 years is long for a surgical title, and it says something about the archive: implantation series and gait analyses stay cited well after publication.12.2 年的被引半衰期在外科刊里算长,说明过刊仍有人用,假体系列与步态分析在发表多年之后仍被引用。
- Gold open access covers 11.76 percent of the file. Most papers still arrive through subscription, with open access taken as an option at acceptance.
- In July 2022 the journal published notice of a new editorial board, the filing that accompanies a change at the top of a masthead.2022
- Federally funded work is handled for the author: papers supported by the NIH or the Wellcome Trust are deposited into PubMed Central on acceptance, without the author arranging it.
Editors
- Charles L. Saltzman holds the editor-in-chief post. He is a professor and chair of orthopaedics at the University of Utah, and he came to the journal in 2022.
- The same appointment put him in charge of Foot & Ankle Orthopaedics as well, so the society's two titles have answered to one editor since then.
- The masthead is built in layers: an executive editor and associate editors sit under the chief, with specialty content editors attached to subject areas.
- International editors are a separate line, which is how a journal owned by an American society keeps a reading bench outside the United States.
- Contemporary Review holds its own line on the masthead, which is how a section becomes a standing product rather than a slot for leftovers.
- Manuscripts go through ScholarOne at mc.manuscriptcentral.com/fai, and preprints are accepted, so a posted draft does not disqualify the paper.稿件走 ScholarOne(mc.manuscriptcentral.com/fai),刊物接受预印本,先把草稿挂出去不影响投稿。
- There is no fee to submit and no fee to publish. Color is free online, while the first color image in print costs 800 dollars and each further one 200.
- Open access is optional through Sage Choice, an arrangement that leaves the subscription route intact for authors who cannot pay.
- The journal belongs to COPE and asks authors to work to the ICMJE recommendations, which is the standard pairing for a surgical society title.
- Podcasts and surgical videos are produced beside the printed article, an editorial choice that treats a procedure as something to be shown as well as described.
- The refusal list is editorial policy, not taste. Declining case reports and technique tips keeps the pages for work that carries a denominator and a follow-up interval.
