Explore
Explore is a bimonthly peer-reviewed journal published by Elsevier in New York since January 2005, subtitled The Journal of Science and Healing and given to evidence-based healing practice drawn from conventional, alternative and cross-cultural medicine, with a 2025 Journal Impact Factor of 2.4.《探索》是 Elsevier 在纽约出版的双月刊,同行评审,2005 年 1 月创刊,副题为“The Journal of Science and Healing”,内容面向来自常规医学、替代医学与跨文化医学的循证疗愈实践,2025 年期刊影响因子为 2.4。
Scope
- The aims statement starts from the scientific principles behind healing practice and then follows them into application across conventional, alternative and cross-cultural medicine.
- Five territories are claimed as the journal's own, namely the healing arts, consciousness, spirituality, eco-environmental issues and basic science, each read through its relation to health.
- Mind and body practice forms the largest single cluster, running from meditation, yoga and tai chi to biofeedback, clinical hypnosis and guided imagery.
- Manual and needling traditions are treated as clinical methods in their own right, so osteopathic manipulation, chiropractic, massage, acupuncture and acupressure all appear in research reports.
- Natural products and food traditions get steady room, with botanical studies and supplement trials sitting beside papers on whole-diet counselling and the medicinal history of everyday foods.
- Consciousness research is pushed further than most medical titles would allow, taking in meditation states, prayer, placebo and nocebo response, and occasionally psi claims argued on evidential grounds.
- Spirituality in clinical care is handled as a subject with methods of its own, covering chaplaincy, meaning-making, suffering and care at the end of life.
- Eco-environmental health ties the clinic to climate, environmental contaminants and contact with nature, a thread that has thickened in recent volumes.
- The healing arts bring in music-thanatology, poetry, visual art and narrative writing, with the humanities read as a particular kind of clinical evidence.
- Basic science papers ask how healing works physiologically, touching psychoneuroimmunology, placebo mechanisms, circadian regulation and the recovery of homeostasis.
- Health services research covers integrative care models, hospital-based complementary clinics, cost-effectiveness, workforce training and whole-health delivery systems.
- The format list is wide for a medical journal, since original research, brief reports, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, hypotheses, reflections, case reports and research letters all run in its pages.
- Shorter humanistic pieces are standing features rather than filler, with personal essays, columns, interviews and book reviews scattered through every issue.
- Topical collections show where the editors think the field is heading, among them Indigenous healing, acupressure from bench to bedside, and the long-running SchwartzReport series.
History

- Six numbers made up the first volume, and the bimonthly rhythm has held ever since, with Crossref recording six issues in every volume from 1 in 2005 to 22 in 2026.

- The National Library of Medicine catalogues the title as “Explore: the journal of science and healing”, with the abbreviation Explore (NY) and New York as place of publication.美国国家医学图书馆把刊名著录为“Explore: the journal of science and healing”,缩写为 Explore (NY),出版地记为纽约。
- MEDLINE and PubMed coverage begins with that first issue at full treatment rather than selected citations, and the NLM abbreviation has stayed Explore (NY) for two decades.MEDLINE
- The first volume already mixed registers, carrying a trial of a complex homeopathic remedy against paracetamol, a paper on the biodynamic model of cranial osteopathy, and an audit of a hospital alternative medicine clinic.
- Subtitle wording has drifted, since NLM keeps the plain conjunction while the publisher's site now prints The Journal of Science & Healing with an ampersand.
- Impact factors moved from 2.358 in 2022 to 1.9 in 2023, recovered to 2.2 in 2024 and reached 2.4 in 2025, with a five-year figure of 2.4.

- The business model has stayed subscription-led with an open-access option, and the 2025 reports put the gold open-access share at 20.1 percent of papers.
- Scopus assigns a CiteScore of 3.6 on a four-year citation window, which sits above the two-year Journal Impact Factor of 2.4.Scopus
- Recent collections mark anniversaries rather than relaunches, among them Indigenous Healing in 2024 and the acupressure and SchwartzReport collections opened in February 2026.

- Case reports must follow the CARE checklist, randomised trials must arrive with a CONSORT checklist, and editors stand aside from papers by themselves, family or close colleagues.
