Evolution & Development
Evolution & Development is a Wiley journal, founded in 1999, that publishes research where evolutionary biology meets embryology, developmental genetics and paleontology. Organismal biologists, molecular biologists, paleontologists and historians of science all appear in its pages, and that brief has been kept for more than a quarter of a century.《进化与发育》由 Wiley 出版,1999 年创刊,刊载进化生物学与胚胎学,发育遗传学及古生物学交汇处的研究。
Scope
- The journal presents itself as a voice for the research community working at the interface of evolutionary and developmental biology.
- Two fields that stood apart for nearly a century are treated as one subject, and their reunion is offered as the focus of a broader synthesis of biological thought.
- Paleontologists are invited to send work on the fossil record, especially where anatomy and the timing of development can be read from bone and shell, and fossil material is weighed as evidence about development.
- Population biologists supply the quantitative side, from selection gradients to the standing variation on which developmental systems draw.
- Developmental biologists and molecular biologists bring gene expression, fate maps and experimental embryology into the same conversation.
- Work from mathematics, from the history of science and from the philosophy of science is welcomed, not merely tolerated.
- Plant evo-devo holds a steady place, with papers on KNOX gene expression in flowers and on the developmental genetics of floral form.
- Insect work runs from wing primordia and color patterns in silk moths to the terminal filaments that set ovariole number in fruit flies.
- Vertebrate skeletons supply much of the material, among them cichlid jaws, vertebral counts in fish and limb proportions in birds.
- Neural crest cells and the wiring of the nervous system recur, from epithelial mimicry in the embryo to the ventral nerve cords of nematodes.
- Body plans and their inertia form another thread, and authors ask why some architectures persist for hundreds of millions of years.
- Plasticity, niche construction and the timing of life cycles are folded into the same frame, often under the banner of eco-evo-devo.
- Comparative genomics adds gene families and paralogues, and recent issues compare homeodomain classes across kingdoms.
- Methods papers sit beside the rest, such as antibody labeling that enriches neural crest cells for flow cytometry.
- Reviews and short perspectives carry the synthesizing load, and the journal has printed collective statements on where the field should go.
