European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery
European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery treats the injured patient as a problem that emergency medicine, orthopaedic and trauma surgery, critical care and rehabilitation have to solve together, and it arranges its sections along that division of labour.《European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery》把创伤病人当作急诊医学与骨科创伤外科、重症医学和康复共同面对的问题,栏目也按这套分工来设。
Registry analyses and cadaveric biomechanics share space with bench work on biomarkers and materials, which is what a trauma journal looks like when experimental research is given equal billing.
Reviews come by invitation and case reports do not come at all, so most of the annual file is primary work from European and overseas centres, with the society's congress abstracts arriving as supplements.
Scope
- Trauma produces individual injury patterns instead of one disease, and the aims page names the parts it is made of, with shock and fractures first and soft tissue damage and organ injury behind them.
- The purpose set out there is an interdisciplinary forum where basic and clinical science meet over pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment, described on the journal page as an exchange between research and hospital.
- Clinical management and operative treatment anchor the remit, and related research is added without being narrowed to a list of procedures, so imaging, resuscitation and outcome measurement all belong here as well.
- Sixteen sections carry the labels printed on each paper. Biomaterials and Experimental Research head the official list, which is where the journal puts its claim that laboratory work matters to trauma care.
- Anatomy does part of the dividing. Foot and ankle, hand, pelvic and spine trauma each hold a label of their own, and Skeletal Trauma stays as the general heading above them.
- Those regional sections have produced focus issues in recent volumes on pelvic fractures, acetabular fractures and thoracolumbar spine injuries, each of them a collection of papers rather than a single article.
- Critical care and emergency surgery sit in separate sections, and the second stretches well past injury, with appendicitis and acute mesenteric ischaemia each having had a focus issue of its own.
- Disaster and military surgery is a section in its own right, and the journal's description says it incorporates the International Journal of Disaster Medicine. The section's own file includes a 2023 focus issue on terror preparedness.
- Neurotrauma has carried more than one focus issue, the first in 2023 and a second in 2024 on the treatment of traumatic brain injury, which makes head injury the theme the section returns to.
- Pediatric trauma is treated as a field of its own rather than as adult trauma in small bodies. The section has run two focus issues on pediatric skeletal trauma and a third on nonunion of fractures in children.
- Geriatric trauma has a section and a readership, and fragility fractures of the pelvis and of the proximal femur have each carried a focus issue, which is a fair signal of where the case mix is heading.
- Polytrauma has a section and a standing call for papers, and in 2024 the journal gathered a focus issue on refining the care of polytraumatized patients.
- Reconstructive surgery, sports injuries and visceral trauma finish the list, the last of these covering injury to solid organs and to the bowel as well as the abdominal wall.
- What arrives is mostly primary work. Original research and clinical or experimental studies are the stated fare, reviews and meta-analyses are commissioned, case reports and questionnaire surveys are not accepted, and the call goes to European and international authors alike.
- Tissue engineering and new materials are named as neighbouring territory on the journal page, beside critical care medicine and neurotraumatology, so a materials paper carrying a clinical question sits inside the remit rather than at its edge.
History
- The first volume is dated 1975 and carries the German title Unfallchirurgie. It came out of Munich under Urban and Vogel, and its opening paper was a German-language study of osteosynthesis for displaced acetabular fractures.
- Numbering never restarted. Volume 1 is 1975, volume 26 is 2000, volume 33 is 2007 and volume 51 is 2025, which makes the volume number simply the year minus 1974.
- A first renaming came in 2000, when the German title gave way to European Journal of Trauma at volume 26. Publisher and city stayed put, and the remit widened from accident surgery to trauma as a whole.
- Seven years later a second renaming produced the present title, European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery, at volume 33 in 2007, and emergency surgery has been in the name ever since.
- The imprint moved in 2011, when Springer took over publication in Heidelberg after more than three decades of Urban and Vogel in Munich. The society's name has sat on the cover through all of it.
- Rhythm changed more than once. Early volumes ran to four issues a year, six became the standard from 1981 with the odd merged issue, and volume 50 in 2024 still closed with a sixth issue in December.
- Volume 51 in 2025 dropped the six-issue grid. One volume now holds a single numbered issue, papers appear online as they are accepted, and Crossref files all 365 records of that volume under 51/1.2025 年的第 51 卷撤掉了六期制。
- The paper date on that issue reads December 2025, and the print ISSN is marked as ceased on the journal page. The volume has turned into a yearly wrapper around a stream of articles.
- Volume 52 in 2026 follows the same pattern, its issue 1 dated December 2026. Beside it sits a supplement carrying the ECTES abstracts, and the 2025 supplement came out in July.2026 年的第 52 卷照此办理,第 1 期标 2026 年 12 月。
- In the bimonthly years the editors gathered themed issues instead, among them pediatric skeletal trauma, traumatic brain injury, 3D printing in orthopaedic trauma and proximal femur fractures, each a small monograph inside the volume.
- MEDLINE coverage is younger than the journal. The library record starts full indexing at volume 41 issue 1 in February 2015, and notes that only selected citations were taken before that date.MEDLINE
- Annual output tells its own story. Crossref counts 226 papers for 2019, 349 for 2022, a dip to 208 in 2023 and 365 for 2025, which leaves the most recent complete year on top of the run.
- Five impact factors read 3.693, 2.374, 1.9, 2.2 and 2.3. The 2025 figure comes with a five-year value of 2.5, a JCI of 1.03 and a second-quartile place at 21 among 55 emergency medicine titles.
- Access changes at the end of the decade. The title is hybrid for now, with 57.64 percent of its output gold, and from 1 January 2027 it becomes fully open access, while submissions from 8 September 2026 carry a charge if accepted.
Editors
- Ingo Marzi holds the editorship from the department of trauma, hand and reconstructive surgery at the Goethe University hospital in Frankfurt, and the editorial office sits in that same department.
- Three editors share the load. Zsolt Balogh works from Newcastle in Australia, Demetrios Demetriades from the Keck School at the University of Southern California, and Frank Hildebrand from the university hospital in Aachen.
- Hannah Eisenhauer is managing editor, with an address at the Frankfurt medical faculty. In a journal of this size the post is the actual desk, since correspondence, scheduling and the queue all pass through it.Hannah Eisenhauer
- Eleven associate editors cover the map, with one each in Japan and Israel, three in Germany, two in Switzerland, two in the Netherlands, one in Sweden and one in Canada.
- Below them the sections have editors of their own, eighteen headings in all, each carrying between one and five names. That list reaches past the sixteen paper labels to thoracic, vascular, upper and lower extremity, abdominal and geriatric trauma, with biostatistics a heading that holds four names.
- An advisory board of nearly eighty names backs the section editors, and its addresses run from San Diego and Toronto through Utrecht and Zurich to Osaka, Shenzhen, Durban and Buenos Aires.
- Review follows the international standard the aims page describes. Every manuscript goes to two or more expert reviewers, a biostatistical consultant joins where the analysis calls for one, and significant findings can be accelerated.
- The society connection shapes the job. As the official publication of the European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery, the journal prints the congress abstracts each year and draws most of its editors from the society's own centres. European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery
- Commissioning is part of the desk. Reviews are invited, case reports and questionnaire studies are turned away, so the queue is shaped before submission rather than sorted out afterwards.
- Speed is measured and published. The journal page gives a median of 11 days from submission to first decision, and sets 1.3 million downloads for 2025 beside 1,208 open access articles.
- The editorial geography still tilts German and Swiss, which is what a journal that began as Unfallchirurgie in Munich would look like half a century on. Its English-language file now reaches well past that base.
