Environmental Science & Technology
Environmental Science & Technology (commonly abbreviated as ES&T) is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by the American Chemical Society (ACS), now issued weekly. It publishes environmental science and technology research addressed to scientists, policy makers and the broader environmental community, and is the core title of the society's environmental publishing portfolio.《环境科学与技术》(Environmental Science & Technology',常用缩写为 ES&T'')是美国化学学会(American Chemical Society 简称 ACS)出版的同行评审学术期刊,现为周刊。
Scope
The journal states its editorial position in its author instructions: a paper is expected to be transformational and direction-setting rather than to add data to an existing issue, and the society's formulation is that for more than fifty years ES&T has been a foundational focus for thought-leading, policy-changing contributions. It addresses scientists, policy makers and the broad environmental community at once, a readership that requires papers to survive peer review and to be directly citable in policy debate.
- Water and environmental chemistry: the fate and removal of aquatic contaminants, groundwater and soil remediation, and the analysis of metals and organic pollutants.
- Atmosphere and climate change: atmospheric chemistry and aerosols, greenhouse gas fluxes, and air pollution control at the interface with climate policy.
- Environmental catalysis and reaction processes: catalytic degradation and the synthesis of pollutant treatment, reaction engineering and process intensification.
- Toxicology and health effects: the toxicology of environmental contaminants, exposure assessment, endocrine disruptors and the risks of nanomaterials.
- Environmental policy and sustainability: environmental policy analysis, life cycle assessment, circular economy and resource recovery.
- Analytical methods and characterization: methods for environmental samples, novel sensing and monitoring technology, and environmental big data and modelling.
The journal is now weekly, with volume and issue numbers advancing continuously through the year. The society publishes neither an acceptance rate nor a time to first decision for the title本刊现为周刊,年度卷期号连续推进。 article processing charges for open access are set in the society's standard price list, at US$4,500 for the Creative Commons attribution licence, with cheaper tiers under more restrictive licences. The society's transformative journal programme ended on 31 December 2024, and the society states that its transformative journals remain hybrid publications thereafter this title is among them and is therefore not fully open access.[2]
History
- Founding context (1967): the journal was founded in 1967 with James J. Morgan of the California Institute of Technology as its founding editor. In the masthead for the society's sixtieth anniversary the journal recorded that Morgan launched the title sixty years ago and that its remit has not shifted since. The publisher has been the American Chemical Society throughout, with no change. [3]
- Sixtieth anniversary (2026): 2026 marks sixty years since the journal's founding, and the society has organized a monthly themed series of special issues through the year on climate change and environmental questions, turning the anniversary into a run of related publications rather than a single retrospective article. [4]
- A substantive change in cadence: the journal was semi-monthly in its earlier years and is now weekly and close to continuous publication. Volume 59 of 2025 contained 58 issues at strict seven-day intervals, a rhythm matched to the review cycle of environmental papers and one structural reason for the journal's sustained position among its peers on impact factor. [5]
- Change of publishing model (end of 2024): the society's transformative journal programme ended on 31 December 2024, and the society states that its transformative journals remain hybrid thereafter. This title belonged to the programme while it ran and returned to hybrid publication at its end出版模式调整(2024年底): 学会的转型期刊计划已于 2024 年 12 月 31 日终止,学会明确说明终止后其转型期刊一律保持混合出版。 it did not become fully open access.[6]
- Metric standing: the journal records an impact factor of 12.2 for 2025, a five-year factor of 13.1 and a Scopus CiteScore of 18.9. The society publishes neither an acceptance rate nor a time to first decision for the title. [7]
Editors
The journal runs on a single editor-in-chief with no deputy: the society's environmental portfolio page lists a deputy editor for several titles in the same portfolio and for this title lists only the editor-in-chief, which is what allows that structure to be inferred. Correspondingly the masthead names an executive editor and a senior executive editor alongside the editor-in-chief, who are executive management rather than co-editors, so the editorship has long been held by one person with concentrated responsibility. The society publishes neither an acceptance rate nor a review duration for the title. [8]
- Julie B. Zimmerman (editor-in-chief since 2020): a professor at Yale University. In an interview in 2026 she described having been involved with the journal in four capacities in turn, as author, reviewer, associate editor and editor-in-chief. Her predecessor was David Sedlak of the University of California, Berkeley, who held the post from 2014 to 2020. [9]
- The current editorial layer: the 2026 masthead names Julie B. Zimmerman as editor-in-chief, Jordi Dachs as executive editor and Margaret S. Mills as senior executive editor, the latter two carrying executive responsibilities. [10]
- Lineage of editors-in-chief: since its founding the journal has been led by James J. Morgan, Russell F. Christman, William H. Glaze, Jerald L. Schnoor, David Sedlak and Julie B. Zimmerman, a succession of six spanning six decades and accumulating alongside the journal's standing in the discipline. [8]
- Standing in the field: long among the most heavily cited titles in environmental science and technology, its papers are cited repeatedly in governance debate precisely because they address both scientific and policy readers, which gives the journal a distinctive mediating role between the two. [3]
