Environmental Health Perspectives
Environmental Health Perspectives (Environ. Health Perspect.) was founded in April 1972 and was long supported by the United States National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, being formally transferred to the American Chemical Society at the close of 2025. It concentrates on environmental toxicology, exposure science and environmental epidemiology, is fully open access with no article processing charge, and had a 2025 impact factor of 10.9.《环境健康展望》(Environmental Health Perspectives'''',缩写 Environ. Health Perspect.'')
Scope
The journal's editorial stance is that a paper must link environmental exposure to health outcome: however complete the toxicology, it has to bear on human exposure or health risk and be usable in risk assessment and policy.
- Environmental toxicology: mechanisms of toxicity of xenobiotics, mixture and combined exposure toxicity, toxicogenomics and high-throughput screening, and alternative toxicological methods.
- Exposure science and measurement: exposure assessment methods, biomonitoring and internal dose, sensors and personal exposure measurement, and exposomics.
- Risk assessment: dose-response and extrapolation, risk characterisation, uncertainty analysis, and cumulative risk assessment methodology.
- Environmental epidemiology: cohort and case-control studies, associations between environmental exposure and health outcome, time-series and spatial analysis, and susceptible populations and health disparities.
- Policy and evaluation: evaluation of environmental and public health policy, analysis of regulatory impact, assessment of intervention effects, and use of evidence in decision-making.
- Priority topics: climate change and health, structural racism and environmental justice, chemical mixtures, and children's environmental health.
The journal is fully open access with no article processing charge, a diamond open access model. The American Chemical Society has announced that it will waive article processing charges until the end of 2026. Under the institute the journal was monthly本刊为完全开放获取且不收取文章处理费,属钻石开放获取模式;美国化学会宣布 2026 年底前免收文章处理费;本刊在移交前的刊期为月刊,美国化学会复刊后的年度期数官方未公示。 the number of issues a year after the society relaunches it has not been stated officially.[1]
History
- Founding (1972): the journal was founded in April 1972 and, according to the official editorial, began under the leadership of David Rall, initially as a record of conferences and symposia. After seven trial issues in 1974 it became a formal journal and moved to monthly peer-reviewed publication.
- Turn to original research (1993): in 1993 the journal turned to original research, the then co-editors announcing the change under the title A new beginning. From then on it moved from conference material to being a research journal.
- Open access and scale: full text has been free since 2004 and the journal subsequently became a diamond open access title with no article processing charge. Submissions rose from 384 in the first quarter of 2020 to 636 in the same quarter of 2025.
- Transfer (2025): funding was interrupted by a shift in the priorities of the National Institutes of Health, and the final issue from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences was volume 133, issue 6, of June 2025, carrying a farewell editorial from the editor-in-chief. At the close of 2025 the journal was formally transferred to the American Chemical Society under the Federal Surplus Personal Property Donation Program, with the society planning to reopen submissions and fold the title into its publishing in early 2026. [1]
- Metrics and indexing: the American Chemical Society gives a two-year impact factor of 10.9 and a CiteScore of 17.7. The society has not formally published the indexing list指标与收录: 美国化学会公布两年影响因子 10.9、引用分数 17.7;本刊的收录清单一事该会未正式公布,可由引用分数佐证 Scopus、由 PMID 佐证 MEDLINE,科学引文索引扩展版未有官方宣布。 Scopus is evidenced by the CiteScore and MEDLINE by PubMed identifiers, while coverage by the Science Citation Index Expanded has not been officially announced.
Editors
Most editors have come from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences本刊历任主编多来自国家环境健康科学研究所,2020 年起首次由非该所人员出任;现任主编来自华盛顿大学,在移交后继续担任主编。 from 2020 the post was held for the first time by someone outside the institute. The present editor comes from the University of Washington and continues in the role after the transfer.[2]
- Present editor-in-chief: Joel D. Kaufman holds appointments in environmental and occupational health sciences, medicine and epidemiology at the University of Washington and took up the post in 2020, the first editor from outside the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
- Founding and past editors: the first editors were George W. Lucier and Gary E.R. Hook as joint editors in 1974. They were followed by Hugh Tilson from 2008 to 2014, Jane Schroeder in an acting role from 2014 to 2015 and Sally Perreault Darney from 2015 to 2020. (Gary E.R. - Role in the field: the journal is the longest-running and wholly free authoritative title in environmental health, and its evidence is routinely cited in risk assessments by regulatory bodies such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
