Energy & Environmental Science
Energy & Environmental Science (commonly abbreviated as EES) is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), issued monthly. It publishes agenda-setting research for the energy transition and the environment, addressed to chemical scientists, chemical and process engineers, energy researchers, bio-scientists and environmental scientists across academia, industry and government.《能源与环境科学》(Energy & Environmental Science',常用缩写为 EES'')是英国皇家化学学会(Royal Society of Chemistry 简称 RSC)出版的同行评审学术期刊,月刊发行。
Scope
The journal describes itself as dedicated to publishing exceptionally important and high quality, agenda-setting research tackling the key global and societal challenges of ensuring the provision of energy and protecting the environment, with a subtitle promising exceptional research to accelerate the global energy transition. The implication is that the criterion is not research quality as such but whether a study would change the field's judgement about which paths matter, so a rigorous but incremental improvement falls outside scope. The readership spans chemistry, process engineering, energy, biology and the environment, which explains the title's agenda influence beyond the chemical journals proper.
- Photovoltaics and solar conversion: perovskite and organic photovoltaics, solar cell materials and devices, interfaces and passivation.

The journal appears monthly, is published in hybrid mode, and the society publishes no acceptance rate. The traceable figures are eight days to first decision on all manuscripts and forty days to decision after peer review, which must be read as two different things, the first including editorial screening and the second being the post-review decision. The chair of the editorial board has spoken in a public interview of a rejection rate above ninety per cent, which is a personal interview statement rather than an official society metric and should not be mixed with one本刊为月刊,属混合出版模式,学会未公布录用比例。 lower acceptance figures in direct conflict with that statement are not adopted.[1]
History
- Founding year (2008): the journal was founded in 2008, with volume 1 published in that year, a fact verifiable across the full record of articles under its ISSN: every 2008 paper carries volume 1, across issues one to six. The title has been Energy & Environmental Science since its founding and never bore another name. The journal often confused with it, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, is an entirely separate Elsevier title with no continuity to this one. [2]
- Publisher unchanged: the journal has been published by the Royal Society of Chemistry since its founding, with no change of publisher, the society having carried full publishing responsibility throughout. [1]
- Change of board chair (2023): Jenny Nelson became chair of the editorial board in February 2023. In a public interview she described herself as the chair of the board, responsible for the journal's development and for leading the board's work, and gave the qualitative statement about rejection rates noted above. [3]
- Metric standing: the society's journal page reports an impact factor of 30.5 for 2025, with eight days to first decision and forty days after peer review. No official CiteScore could be traced to a society page, and the journal page does not list a specific article processing charge for this title. [1]
Editors
The journal has no editor-in-chief. It runs a two-layer structure of an editorial board chair and an executive editor: the chair is appointed by the society and responsible for the academic direction and for leading the board, while the executive editor is a society employee responsible for manuscript flow and publishing execution, with two deputy editors alongside. This follows the society's own publishing convention and means that the editorial direction of the journal rests on the chair's academic judgement while its daily process is carried by staff. [4]
- Jenny Nelson (chair of the editorial board since February 2023): a Royal Society Research Professor at Imperial College London. She took the chair of a journal already carrying an impact factor in the thirties, which raises correspondingly the bar for the agenda-setting value expected of manuscripts, and helps explain her description of the journal's screening intensity as a rejection rate above ninety per cent. [4]
- Executive and deputy editors: the executive editor is Emma Eley, a society employee, and the two deputy editors are Edward Gardner and Sarah Holmes. Day-to-day handling of manuscripts falls to the executive editor post. [4]
- Founding editorship: the editor-in-chief at founding is not established by an authoritative source. One claim in circulation points to Nathan Lewis at the California Institute of Technology, but the sources for it contradict themselves, giving two widely divergent impact factor figures for the same journal on the same site, and it is therefore not adopted. [4]
- Standing in the field: the journal occupies an agenda-setting position in the publication of energy transition research, and its papers are cited directly in policy documents and industrial roadmaps. The society's own subtitle, promising exceptional research to accelerate the global energy transition, matches the position its metrics hold. [1]
