Economic Botany
Economic Botany was a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal about the uses people make of plants, issued by Springer for the New York Botanical Garden and the society now called the Society for Ethnobotany, which went by the name Society for Economic Botany until 2023.《经济植物学》是由 Springer 为纽约植物园与如今的民族植物学会出版的季刊,实行同行评议,讨论人对植物的各种利用,该学会在 2023 年以前名为经济植物学会。
Its run began in 1947 and closed with volume 79 at the end of 2025, when a Journal Impact Factor of 1.9 placed it 145th among 285 plant science journals.
Scope
- The editors present the journal as interdisciplinary, bridging pure and applied botany by concentrating on the uses of plants by people in every region of the world.
- Five kinds of contribution are accepted, namely original research articles, review articles, brief reports on culturally important plants, book reviews and guest editorials.
- Food plants hold a central place, with work on wild gathered species, home gardens and the part plant use plays in food security and food sovereignty.
- Medicinal plants and local healing systems form the largest body of published work, from ethnopharmacological field surveys to studies of how remedies move between village and clinic.
- Fibres, resins, oils, dyes and timber carry the material side of the remit, and a paper on craft production is expected to reach the plant behind the object.
- Fungi appear alongside plants in the society's statement of purpose, which covers the past, present and potential uses of plants and fungi by humankind.
- Historical depth is welcome, so archaeobotanical assemblages, herbarium sheets and colonial-era trade records are read as evidence of how plant use changed.
- Local knowledge gets attention on its own terms, including naming systems, transmission between generations and the erosion of plant vocabulary in shifting economies.
- Harvest and trade are followed from the gathering site to the market, whether the species is a wild mushroom, a medicinal bark or an ornamental succulent.
- Domestication and landrace diversity interest the editors when the question is how people selected, named and kept a crop rather than how much it yielded.
- Papers that are mainly agronomic, anatomical or horticultural fall outside the remit, and so do analyses concerned chiefly with the chemical constituents of plants.
- A bare list of useful plants is refused unless it reports a first record for a culture or region and carries an analysis of why those species are used.
- Systematic and phylogenetic work is admitted only when it tests hypotheses tied to useful traits, and the loss of botanical knowledge on its own is not a sufficient justification.
History
- Edmund H. Fulling founded the journal at the New York Botanical Garden in 1947, and the first volume carried papers on the chicle industry, tung oil, seaweed and California cork oak.
- The title itself came from Ralph Cheney, who remarked at a Torrey Botanical Club meeting that economic entomology and economic geography had journals while economic botany did not.
- William J. Robbins, then director of the garden, set the aim in the opening volume as a meeting place for botanists concerned with principles and with the industrial use of plants.
- The journal was turned over to the garden in 1957, and a conference held there the following year led to the founding of the Society for Economic Botany.1957
- By the late 1950s it had become the society's flagship, and its pages have since carried the field's book reviews, bibliographies and short notes on useful plants.
- Four issues have made a volume from the start, the first being dated January to March 1947, and the quarterly rhythm held across all seventy-nine volumes.
- The imprint has stayed at the Bronx garden, first as publisher of record and later as the body for which Springer issues the journal.
- Print ISSN 0013-0001 was joined by an electronic ISSN 1874-9364, and the digital file in Crossref now holds 4,339 records reaching back to volume one.
- Science Citation Index Expanded has carried the title throughout, while MEDLINE and PubMed list it for selected citations only, an arrangement set by the indexing agreement.
- In the 2025 release the journal sits in the third quartile of plant sciences at 145 of 285, with a five-year impact factor of 2.1 and a Journal Citation Indicator of 0.4.2025 年榜单把该刊放在植物科学第三区,285 种刊物中列第 145 位,五年影响因子为 2.1,期刊引证指标为 0.4。
- Citation totals have reached 2,911 against an annual output near 28 articles, and a cited half-life of 23.3 years points to a literature read long after publication.
- The impact factor has moved between 1.3 and 2.4 across five years, at 1.731 in 2021, 2.351 in 2022, 1.7 in 2023, 1.3 in 2024 and 1.9 in 2025.
- Gold open access accounts for 33.75 per cent of recent output under a hybrid model, so most papers still sit behind a subscription while about a third are free.
- In June 2023 the sponsoring society renamed itself the Society for Ethnobotany, and its council approved a new journal title on 8 August 2023 after a member survey.2023 年 6 月,主办学会更名为民族植物学会,同年 8 月 8 日的理事会依会员调查结果通过了新的刊名。
- Ethnobotany alone was already taken by another journal, so the dual title Ethnobotany and Economic Botany was chosen, effective 1 January 2026, with volume 80 continuing the sequence.
- An editorial in the final volume set out the reasoning, citing a 2022 survey in which 54 per cent of respondents named ethnobotany as a main discipline and 6 per cent economic botany. [1]
Editors
- Ina Vandebroek, based at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, serves as editor-in-chief, and her own research sits within medical ethnobotany.
- Lawrence M. Kelly of the New York Botanical Garden is managing editor, and Wendy Applequist of the Missouri Botanical Garden handles the book review section.
- Twenty-one associate editors are listed, working in the United States, Brazil, Spain, Nepal, Italy, China, Mexico, South Africa and several other countries.
- Michael J. Balick, attached to the garden's Institute of Economic Botany, appears among them, a standing link to the institution that founded the journal.
- Median time from submission to first decision is three days, a figure the publisher reports alongside 228,200 article downloads in 2025.
- Manuscripts enter through Springer Nature's online submission system, and scope screening comes first, since the exclusion list is applied before referees are approached.
- Referees are chosen for work in the submitted field, and the handling editor weighs their reports against the scope printed on the journal's site.
- The journal asks authors to read an editorial on ethical accountability in ethnobotany and ethnobiology research, which sets expectations for consent and for returning results to communities.
- The journal is hybrid, so an author chooses between the subscription route and an open access charge once a paper is accepted, and both choices leave the final version in the record.
- Special issues and guest-edited collections are announced on the journal's updates page, and brief reports pass through the office that handles full articles.
- Corrections and retractions follow the publisher's ethics guidelines, and a withdrawn paper stays in the record with a notice attached rather than disappearing from the archive.
