East China University of Science and Technology

East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), in Chinese 华东理工大学, is a public university in Shanghai directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China.华东理工大学（East China University of Science and Technology，简称 ECUST）是位于上海、由中华人民共和国教育部直属的公立大学。

Founded in 1952 as the East China Institute of Chemical Technology, it was the first higher-education institution in the People's Republic distinguished for chemical engineering, and it belongs to Project 211 and the Double First-Class Construction.该校 1952 年以「华东化工学院」之名创办，是新中国第一所以化工特色闻名的高等学府，并列入「211 工程」与「双一流」建设。

It enrols about 17,000 full-time undergraduates and more than 15,000 postgraduate students, counts 11 academicians among its staff, and is placed 670th in the QS World University Rankings 2027.该校全日制本科生约 1.7 万人、研究生逾 1.5 万人，师资中拥有 11 位院士；在 2027 年 QS 世界大学排名中位列世界第 670 位。

History

• The university's origins reach back over a century to Nanyang Public School and Aurora University, whose chemistry departments helped to form the new institution.该校的渊源可上溯百余年，南洋公学与震旦学院的化工系参与了新校的组建。
• In October 1952 the East China Military and Political Committee decided to create the East China Institute of Chemical Technology by merging the chemical engineering departments of Jiaotong University, Aurora University, Utopia University, Soochow University and Jiangnan University.1952 年 10 月，华东军政委员会决定把交通大学、震旦大学、大同大学、东吴大学与江南大学的化工系合并，组建华东化工学院。

• In June 1996 the university entered Project 211, and the Shanghai Petrochemical College was merged into it to form the Jinshan campus.
