East China Normal University

East China Normal University (ECNU, Chinese: 华东师范大学) is a public research university in Shanghai, China, administered by the Ministry of Education and co-funded by the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal Government.华东师范大学（简称 ECNU）是位于中国上海的一所公立研究型大学，直属于教育部，由教育部与上海市人民政府共建。

Formed in 1951 by merging Great China University and Kwang Hua University, whose roots reach back to the Saint John's College of 1879, it was the first teachers' university established after the founding of the People's Republic of China.该校于 1951 年由大夏大学与光华大学合并而成，其渊源可追溯至 1879 年的圣约翰书院，是中华人民共和国成立后创办的第一所师范大学。

History

• The oldest root of the university is Saint John's College, founded in 1879 by William Jones Boone, the first American Episcopal missionary bishop in China, and the missionary Joseph Schereschewsky.该校最古老的源头是圣约翰书院，由美国圣公会首位在华传教主教文惠廉与传教士施约瑟于 1879 年创办。

• Great China University was founded in Xiamen on 1 June 1924 after a protest movement at Xiamen University, and it later moved to Shanghai, where it took the site on Zhongshan North Road.大夏大学于 1924 年 6 月 1 日在厦门因厦门大学的学潮而创办，后迁至上海并落址于中山北路一带。

• Kwang Hua University was founded on 3 June 1925 as a breakaway from Saint John's University after the May Thirtieth Movement, taking its name from the phrase restoring the glory of China.光华大学于 1925 年 6 月 3 日在五卅运动后自圣约翰大学分离而创办，校名取「光复中华」之意。

• On 16 October 1951 East China Normal University was formally established by merging Great China University and Kwang Hua University with faculty from Fudan University, Tongji University and the University of Shanghai.1951 年 10 月 16 日，华东师范大学由大夏大学与光华大学合并，并汇入复旦大学、同济大学与沪江大学的部分师资而正式成立。
