East China Jiaotong University

East China Jiaotong University (ECJTU) is a provincial public university in Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi Province, China, whose teaching and research are centred on railway and transportation engineering.华东交通大学是一所位于中国江西省省会南昌市的省属公办高校，教学与科研以铁道与交通运输工程为核心。

It was created in 1971, when the State Council merged the locomotive and rolling stock department of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the railway engineering programme of Tongji University into the Shanghai Railway Institute and renamed it East China Jiaotong University.学校创建于 1971 年，当时国务院将上海交通大学机车车辆系与同济大学铁道工程专业并入上海铁道学院，并将其更名为华东交通大学。

The university is jointly built by the Jiangxi Provincial People's Government, the Ministry of Education and China Railway, and it enrols more than 23,000 registered students.学校由江西省人民政府、教育部与中国铁路总公司共建，现有各类注册学生 23000 余人。

History

• In 1954 a school in Suzhou moved to Shanghai and was renamed the Shanghai Railway Communication and Signal School, which trained technical staff for the railway signalling system.1954 年，苏州一所学校迁往上海，并更名为上海铁路通讯讯号学校，主要培养铁路通信信号技术人员。
• In 1958 that school became a higher education institution under the name Shanghai Railway Institute.1958 年，该校升格为高等学校，定名上海铁道学院。
• The national education work conference held from 15 April to 31 July 1971 proposed transferring the locomotive and rolling stock department of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, with its three specialties of diesel locomotives, electric locomotives and railway vehicles, and the railway engineering programme of Tongji University into the Shanghai Railway Institute.1971 年 4 月 15 日至 7 月 31 日召开的全国教育工作会议提出，将上海交通大学机车车辆系（含内燃机车、电力机车、铁道车辆三个专业）与同济大学铁道工程专业调入上海铁道学院。
• The same conference gave the enlarged institution the name East China Jiaotong University, and on 22 September 1971 the State Council and the Central Military Commission decided to move it to Jiangxi, with the site chosen at Shuanggang in Nanchang.同一次会议将这所扩充后的学校定名为华东交通大学，1971 年 9 月 22 日国务院与中央军委决定将学校迁往江西，校址选在南昌双港。
• In 1973 the admissions of the merged programmes were issued under the name East China Jiaotong University for the first time, with new students reporting to the former Shanghai Railway Institute.1973 年，合并专业的招生计划首次以「华东交通大学」名义下达，录取新生到原上海铁道学院报到。

• At a time when more than 400 Chinese universities were reduced to about 300 through closure, merger and conversion, East China Jiaotong University was one of the few institutions to be added, as a model of a new university integrating production, teaching and research.当时全国 400 多所高校经撤并改仅存 300 余所，华东交通大学却是少数几所增设的高校之一，目标是建成产、学、研一体的新型大学样板。
• Its first phase of construction was listed as a national large and medium-sized construction project.学校第一期工程被列入国家大中型建设项目。
