Scope
- Publishes original research papers in all branches of mathematics
- The journal does not restrict itself to particular branches and covers areas such as algebra, number theory, geometry and topology
- It also covers partial differential equations, probability, mathematical physics, combinatorics and logic

History
- The first issue appeared in March 1935, published by Duke University Press
- It was founded because American mathematical output surged in the 1920s and the leading journals faced a heavy backlog, creating a need for a new first-rate journal创办动机是二十世纪二十年代美国数学研究产出激增,主要数学刊积压严重,需要一本新的一流期刊分流稿件。
- The university hired J. M. Thomas in 1930 and Leonard Carlitz in 1932 to strengthen the mathematics department in support of the journal为配合办刊,校方于 1930 年聘入 J. M. Thomas、1932 年聘入 Leonard Carlitz 以充实数学系。
- The first managing editor was J. M. Thomas, and the founding editors included Arthur Coble and David V. Widder首任执行主编为 J. M. Thomas,创刊编辑包括 Arthur Coble 与 David V. Widder。
- The name Southern Mathematical Journal was nearly adopted before Duke Mathematical Journal was settled in January
- The first paper was Solomon Lefschetz's Chain-deformations in topology, and the journal began as a quarterly before moving to twelve issues a year in 1992 and eighteen issues a year at present创刊首篇论文为 Solomon Lefschetz 的《拓扑中的链变形》(Chain-deformations in topology),该刊起初为季刊,1992 年起改为每年十二期,现为每年十八期。[1]
Editors
- The managing editors are Hubert L. Bray and Alexander Kiselev, both professors of mathematics at Duke University现任执行主编为 Hubert L. Bray 与 Alexander Kiselev,均为杜克大学数学教授。
- Hubert L. Bray works on differential geometry, geometric analysis and general relativityHubert L. Bray
- Alexander Kiselev works on mathematical fluid dynamics and mathematical biologyAlexander Kiselev
- The editorial board has 24 editors from the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, Germany, Switzerland and France
- The editorial office returned to Duke University in 2018 after more than twenty years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
- No pre-submission enquiry is required, manuscripts are submitted directly through EditFlow, and neither submission fees nor article processing charges are levied该刊不要求投稿前咨询,稿件直接经 EditFlow 系统投稿,不收投稿费与文章处理费。
