Coral Reefs
Coral Reefs (which carries no widely used abbreviated form, and may be rendered in Chinese as 珊瑚礁) is a marine biology journal published by Springer. Founded in 1982, it publishes original research on coral reef ecology, reef geomorphology and the management and conservation of reefs, with a 2025 impact factor of 3.5.Coral Reefs(无常用缩写,中文可译为《珊瑚礁》)是 Springer 出版的海洋生物学期刊,1982 年创刊,刊载珊瑚礁生态学、礁体地质地貌学与珊瑚礁管理与保护方面的原创研究,2025 年影响因子为 3.5。[1]
Scope
- Scope: the journal publishes original research in coral reef ecology, covering the species composition, population dynamics, community structure and energy flow of reef organisms, and the functioning of reefs as whole systems.
- Reef-building research: it also carries papers in reef geomorphology and geology, addressing reef accretion rates, carbonate deposition, the morphological evolution of reef slopes and reef flats, and the value of reefs as indicators in palaeoclimate reconstruction.
- Applications and management: submissions addressing conservation biology, marine protected area management and reef restoration are welcome, and papers on restoration ecology and the response to bleaching events have increased noticeably in recent years. The journal is not confined to the tropics and covers reef systems at all latitudes and across all ocean basins, though the great majority of what it publishes concerns tropical and subtropical reefs in the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
- Open access: the journal is a hybrid title, so subscribers read the full text free of charge and authors may opt for paid immediate open access.
- Indexing and metrics: the journal is indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded and ranks in the first quartile in the Marine and Freshwater Biology category, with a 2025 impact factor of 3.5. [2]
History
- 1982: the journal was founded as a specialist title for the coral reef ecology community, published by Springer. Its editorial work was carried by a group of reef researchers based in Australia and the United Kingdom, and its launch was directly motivated by the attention that bleaching events had brought to the field.1982年: 期刊创刊,创刊时的定位是一份面向珊瑚礁生态学界的专业刊物,出版方为 Springer,编务由一群来自澳大利亚与英国的珊瑚礁研究者承担,其办刊动机与当时珊瑚礁白化事件引发学界关注直接相关。
- An important distinction: although the journal is published by Springer, it is not an official journal of the Australian Institute of Marine Science. Several institute researchers do serve on the board, but the day-to-day editorial work is handled by the publisher's Berlin editorial office.
- The 1980s to the 1990s: the journal's standing rose against the background of the bleaching events and the marine protected area movement, and it became one of the most widely cited titles in coral reef ecology.1980年代至1990年代: 期刊在白化事件与海洋保护区运动的背景下影响力上升,成为珊瑚礁生态学领域引用最广的刊物之一。
- The 2000s: as global reef monitoring networks were established and mass bleaching events occurred, the mix of submissions shifted, with a marked rise in papers on applied ecology and reef restoration.2000年代: 随全球珊瑚礁监测网络的建立与大规模白化事件的出现,期刊的稿源结构发生变化,应用生态学与礁区恢复方向的论文比例明显上升。
- Recent years: the impact factor has risen steadily from below 1 at the journal's inception to a stable range of 3 to 4 in recent years, with the first quartile in Marine and Freshwater Biology held throughout.
- Publisher history: Springer has published the journal from the outset. Along the way it passed through the 2003 merger of Elsevier with Reed Elsevier and the 2015 merger of Springer with Macmillan, finally becoming part of Springer Nature. Neither the journal's title nor its publisher has changed. [3]
Editors
- Editor-in-chief: the journal is led by Dr Emma F. Brien of the University of Queensland, Australia. Her work concentrates on coral reproductive biology and assisted propagation on reefs, and she is among the most frequently cited authors in reef restoration research.
- Associate editors: the associate editors are based in Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and France, and cover coral physiology, reef ecological modelling, marine conservation and remote sensing.
- Editorial board and the journal's particular position: the board is composed mainly of researchers from Australia and the Pacific region, while drawing on the scientific community of the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean and the island states of the Pacific. This composition closely mirrors the real geography of reef research. What distinguishes the journal from other marine ecology titles is that its object is the reef system as such, so geomorphologists and geoscientists, and resource managers with a practical orientation, all find a matching gatekeeper on the same board.
- Submission system: manuscripts are lodged through the publisher's online submission system under a public peer-review process. The publisher publishes its article processing charge and a waiver route for funded authors on the journal's website. [4]
