Communications Biology
Communications Biology is a fully open access, online only journal from Nature Portfolio that published its first papers in January 2018 and covers research across all of biology, with a 2025 Journal Impact Factor of 5.8.《通讯生物学》(Communications Biology)是(Nature Portfolio)旗下完全开放获取的纯在线期刊,2018 年 1 月发表首批论文,覆盖生物学各个分支,2025 年期刊影响因子为 5.8。
Scope
- The journal accepts research that advances a specialised area of biology, without requiring the broad appeal demanded by Nature and Nature Communications.
- Coverage runs from molecular and cellular biology, genetics and biochemistry through neuroscience and immunology to ecology, evolution and plant science.
- Methods and tools papers are considered on their usefulness even when they do not report a new biological discovery.
- Reviews, Perspectives and Comments give the journal a commentary function that pure research outlets lack.
- Reporting standards are enforced through the Nature Research Reporting Summary, required for all accepted papers.
- Replication, reproducibility and statistical rigour are stated editorial priorities, and papers are assessed by professional editors rather than by academic editors alone.
- Collections group papers by theme, often curated by editorial board members, and provide a route for early career researchers to shape scope.
History
- The journal launched in January 2018 as part of a Nature Research family of broad scope open access titles alongside Communications Chemistry and Communications Physics.
- Its founding rationale was that specialist work of high quality had few homes that were both broad in readership and selective in standards. [1]
- Within one year the journal had published more than 240 research articles and eight review or commentary pieces. [2]
- Transparent peer review became an author option from January 2019, and the names of handling editors have been published since June 2021.
- By its fifth anniversary the journal had published over 4,000 research articles, and its board had grown from eight members to 133 across 29 countries. [3]
- The 2025 impact factor is 5.8, against 5.1 in 2024 and 6.548 in 2022, ranking ninth of 106 titles in biology.2025
Editors
- Christina Karlsson Rosenthal is chief editor and leads a full-time in-house team of PhD level editors, which numbered eleven including two deputies by 2023.Christina Karlsson Rosenthal
- Academic editorial board members handle manuscripts jointly with the in-house editors, combining subject expertise with editorial consistency.
- Section Lead editorial board members, introduced in 2022, take on additional responsibility for groups of subject areas.2022
- Board members are active researchers at different career stages, and the journal states diversity of gender, geography and subfield as an explicit recruitment criterion.
- Authors may opt into transparent review, and about 69 percent did so in the first half of 2022.
- There is no pre-submission enquiry requirement, and the journal also maintains a standing call for reviewers to widen its referee pool.
