Scope
- The journal is positioned as an interdisciplinary platform publishing cutting-edge articles that describe original basic and applied work involving biologically inspired computational accounts of all aspects of natural and artificial cognitive systems, providing a vehicle for disseminating research, current practices and future trends in the emerging discipline of cognitive computation. *
- Its central purpose is to establish a forum bringing different scientific communities together to discuss key issues in cognitive computation and to promote interdisciplinary understanding across a range of cognitive topics. *
- The cognitive topics covered include perception, action, attention, learning and memory, decision making, language processing, communication, reasoning, problem solving and the conscious aspects of cognition. *
- Areas of particular interest include artificial intelligence, neural networks, cognitive neuromorphic engineering and other hardware implementations, cognitive robotics, autonomous cognitive systems, neuroscience nanotechnology, self-organising systems, swarm and immune systems, complex systems and control theory, and computational cognitive neuroscience. [2]
- Paper types include regular full-length papers, short papers and letters, in-depth reviews, book reviews, comments and discussions, opinion and controversy pieces, letters to the editor, and special issue proposals. Regular papers may run to 10,000 words. Reviews are normally invited by the editor, although authors may approach the editor with a proposal.
History
- March 2009: Founded as a new interdisciplinary title in the Springer neuroscience portfolio, with Amir Hussain as founding editor-in-chief and Igor Aleksander as honorary editor-in-chief. The inaugural issue carried ten invited contributions, mainly reviews of the journal's principal areas.2009 年 3 月:创刊,为施普林格神经科学系列新增的跨学科刊物,创刊主编为 Amir Hussain,荣誉主编为 Igor Aleksander,首期收录十篇受邀文章,主要为各主要研究方向的综述。*
- 2009: All articles were freely available for download throughout the founding year so that institutions could evaluate the journal before subscribing. Electronic and print editions were offered from the start, with the print edition initially published quarterly.2009 年:创刊当年全部文章可免费获取下载,供各机构在订阅决策前试用;期刊自创刊起即同时提供电子版与纸质版,纸质部分最初按季出版。*
- The 2010s: Publication frequency moved from quarterly to six issues per year, and coverage was broadened through standing sections on cognitive and social decision making, Sentic Computing and big data analytics, with the article language standardised as English.2010 年代:逐步由季刊调整为每年六期的出版节奏,并通过设立认知与社会决策、情感计算与大数据分析等常设专栏扩展覆盖面,论文语言统一为英语。*
- The 2020s: The impact factor rose from the 4-point range of the founding years to 7.4 in 2025, with a five-year impact factor of 5.4. The journal is indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded and several other databases, and the median time to first decision is 22 days.2020 年代:影响因子由创刊初期的 4 分区间上升至 2025 年的 7.4,五年期影响因子为 5.4,被科学引文索引扩展版等多个数据库收录,投稿至首次决定的中位时长为 22 天。*
Editors
- Editor-in-chief: Professor Amir Hussain is the current and founding editor-in-chief. He was at the University of Stirling (UK) for many years, holding a Personal Chair in Cognitive Computing from 2012, then served at Edinburgh Napier University (UK) as Professor of Trustworthy AI and founding director of its cognitive big data and cybersecurity laboratory from 2018 to 2026, before moving in 2026 to King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (Saudi Arabia) as Chair Professor of AI. *
- Honorary editor: Dr Igor Aleksander has held the post of honorary editor since the journal's founding, with research interests in machine consciousness and neuromorphic computing. *
