Climate of the Past
Climate of the Past (commonly abbreviated as Clim. Past) is a not-for-profit international scientific journal sponsored by the European Geosciences Union and published by Copernicus Publications. Launched in 2005, it is devoted to the climate history of the Earth, with a 2025 impact factor of 3.8.Climate of the Past(常用缩写 Clim. [1]
Scope
- Scope: the journal publishes and discusses research articles, short communications and review papers on the climate history of the Earth, covering all temporal scales from geological time to multidecadal studies of the last century, while studies focusing mainly on present and future climate fall outside its scope.
- Subject coverage: it covers reconstructions of past climate from instrumental, historical and proxy data of marine, terrestrial and ice archives, the development and validation of new proxies, theoretical and empirical studies of processes and feedbacks among climate system components, and simulation of past climate together with model-based interpretation of palaeoclimate data.
- Publishing model: fully open access, the journal runs an innovative two-stage process in which preprints undergo open scientific discussion before the final paper appears, fostering debate, making quality assurance transparent and enabling rapid publication.
- Not-for-profit character: the journal is not-for-profit, and its editors serve on a purely voluntary basis in line with the EGU philosophy. [2]
- Indexing and metrics: the journal is indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded, holds a second-quartile position in the JCR, and its 2025 impact factor is 3.8.
History
- Founded in 2005: the journal was launched in 2005 and is published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences Union as part of its journal family.2005年创刊: 期刊于 2005 年创刊,由 Copernicus Publications 代表欧洲地球科学联合会出版,属联合会期刊家族成员。
- Background to the founding: palaeoclimate research had long lacked a dedicated international venue for the climate history of the Earth, and the journal was created to fill that gap with an interactive public review process from the outset.
- Process history: the two-stage workflow has been in place since the launch, with preprints in the first stage undergoing open interactive discussion and revised final papers formally published in the second.
- Recent metrics: the impact factor stood at 3.174 in 2017, 4.498 in 2021 and 3.8 in 2025, with a long-standing second-quartile position in the geosciences and meteorological categories. [3]
- Editorial orientation: the journal emphasises open science and data availability, requiring manuscripts to carry sufficient data and model documentation for reproducibility.
Editors
- Co-editorship: three co-editors-in-chief lead the journal, namely Erin McClymont of Durham University in the United Kingdom, Irina Rogozhina of the Center for Advanced Research in Arid Zones in Chile and Denis-Didier Rousseau of the CNRS and the University of Montpellier in France.
- Senior and honorary editors: Luke Skinner of the University of Cambridge is listed as senior editor, with Hugues Goosse of UCLouvain in Belgium and Gerald Ganssen of Germany as honorary editors.
- Editorial board: the editor team of about thirty members is spread across Australia, Italy, France, the United States, Switzerland, Brazil, Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, Chile, Japan, Poland, Spain and Norway, covering atmospheric dynamics, the carbon cycle, climate modelling, ice dynamics and proxy development. [4]
- Submission and peer review: manuscripts enter public discussion as preprints before revised versions are formally published, the whole review remaining interactive and transparent.
