Chongqing University

Chongqing University is a public research university in the Shapingba District of Chongqing, China, directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and listed in the Double First-Class Construction as a Class A university, having previously been a Project 985 and Project 211 institution.重庆大学是位于中国重庆市沙坪坝区的一所公立研究型大学，直属于中华人民共和国教育部，入选「双一流」A 类建设高校，曾为「985 工程」与「211 工程」重点建设高校。

Founded in 1929 by the Sichuan general Liu Xiang, who became its first president, it had grown into a comprehensive university with faculties of arts, science, engineering, business, law and medicine by the 1940s and today comprises seven faculties and 35 schools.该校于 1929 年由四川军事将领刘湘创办，刘湘出任首任校长；至 20 世纪 40 年代已发展为文、理、工、商、法、医各科齐全的综合性大学，现设 7 个学部与 35 个学院。

History

• In 1926 the Sichuan Rehabilitation Conference resolved to build two new universities, in Chengdu and in Chongqing, and the Chengdu institution was established first.1926 年，「全川善后大会」通过决议，确定在成都与重庆两地各兴建一所大学，成都的大学率先成立。

• In 1928 teachers of eastern Sichuan origin returned from Chengdu and formed a Chongqing University Promotion Association, winning the support of the Sichuan warlord Liu Xiang.1928 年，一批川东籍教师由成都返回重庆，成立重庆大学促进会，并获得主政四川的军阀刘湘的支持。

• On 12 October 1929 the first two preparatory classes of Chongqing University opened at Yangjia Garden in Caiyuanba, marking the university's establishment, and Liu Xiang was elected its first president.1929 年 10 月 12 日，重庆大学首期两个预科班在菜园坝杨佳花园开学，宣告学校成立，刘湘当选首任校长。

• The founding declaration of 1929 argued that a university in Chongqing was needed so that local industry and commerce could draw on trained talent rather than seeking it from afar.1929 年的《重庆大学成立宣言》主张，重庆设立大学才能让本地工商业依靠自身人才，而不必远求于外。

• Shapingba was selected as the permanent site in 1929, and in 1933 the college of science building was completed and the university moved there for good.1929 年选定沙坪坝为永久校址，1933 年理学院楼落成，学校正式迁入沙坪坝并沿用至今。
