Cell Metabolism
Cell Metabolism (Cell Metab.) is a metabolism research journal published by Cell Press. Founded in January 2005, it is among the highest-impact primary research titles in metabolism, concentrates on the molecular mechanisms of metabolic regulation and their role in disease, appears monthly, and had a 2025 impact factor of 37.0.《细胞代谢》(Cell Metabolism'''',缩写 Cell Metab.'')
Scope
The journal's editorial stance is that metabolism has to be explained mechanistically: however complete the phenotype, a paper must give the molecular or cellular mechanism of metabolic regulation and show what it means for physiological homeostasis or disease.
- Cellular metabolism and homeostasis: nutrient sensing and metabolic pathways, organellar metabolism and mitochondrial function, transcriptional and epigenetic control of metabolism, and circadian rhythms and feeding behaviour.
- Diabetes, obesity and the islet: beta-cell function and failure, mechanisms of insulin resistance, neuroendocrine control of obesity, and diabetic complications.

The journal is hybrid, with content moving to delayed open access twelve months after publication, and the gold open access article processing charge is 10,400 US dollars. The publisher reports seven days to first editorial decision, 187 days to acceptance and 28 days from acceptance to online publication, the first-decision figure including editorial screening本刊为混合出版,未发表后十二个月转为延迟开放,金色开放获取的文章处理费为一万零四百美元;出版方公布投稿至首次编辑决定七天、投稿至接收一百八十七天、接收至线上二十八天,其中首次决定包含编辑部初筛,录用比例未公布。 no acceptance rate is published.[1]
History
- Founding (2005): volume 1, issue 1 appeared in January 2005. According to the journal's twentieth-anniversary editorial, the rationale was that the metabolism community needed a home of its own, a top-tier primary research journal devoted specifically to metabolic research. [2]
- Twenty years and scale (2025): 2025 marked the journal's twentieth year, marked by commemorative content reviewing two decades of change in metabolism research. The journal now publishes one volume of twelve issues a year and has reached volume 37.
- Publishing model: the journal is not a gold open access title but uses a hybrid model with delayed open access after twelve months, with paid immediate open access available to authors. The arrangement divides labour with the fully open access titles launched by Cell Press in the same period.
- Metrics and indexing: the impact factor is 37.0 and the CiteScore 54.1, on the 2025 Journal Citation Reports released by Clarivate in 2026. The journal is indexed in Scopus and MEDLINE, and holding a Journal Citation Reports impact factor means it is covered by the Science Citation Index Expanded. [1]
Editors
The journal follows the Cell Press in-house professional editor model, in which the editor-in-chief is a professional editor appointed within the publisher rather than a researcher holding an academic post. The present editor is based in the Madrid office and her two predecessors were based in house in the United States. [3]
- Present editor: Salvatore Fabbiano is an in-house professional editor at Cell Press based in the Madrid office and took up the post in 2025, having previously served as a senior editor on the journal.
- Past editors: Nikla Emambokus served from 2010 to 2019 and Allyson Evans from 2019 to 2025. The publisher has not made public the identity of the founding editor for the years from 2005 to 2010, and this is recorded as not published. [4]
- Role in the field: the journal raised metabolism from a branch of physiology to a distinct top-tier journal field. Its work on nutrient sensing and metabolic reprogramming is often treated as defining for the area, and it led Cell Press to launch further metabolism-oriented sister titles.
