The university takes its name from the Ca' Foscari palace, a late Venetian Gothic building raised in 1453 for Doge Francesco Foscari, which stands on the widest bend of the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro sestiere and has served as the institution's historic seat since the nineteenth century.

Ca' Foscari enrols roughly 21,000 students with about 1,500 faculty and staff, and the four mainstream tables place it at 600th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, in the 451-500 band of the Times Higher Education ranking for 2027, 932nd in the US News global ranking for 2026-2027 and outside the main list of the Shanghai ARWU for 2026.
