BJPsych International
BJPsych International is the Royal College of Psychiatrists' quarterly on global mental health, published by Cambridge University Press and carrying its present title since 2015. It reports on services and policy in low- and middle-income countries, and its 2025 Journal Impact Factor is 1.9, JCR Psychiatry Q3 (187/293) within the Emerging Sources Citation Index.《英国精神病学国际版》是英国皇家精神科医学院主办的国际精神卫生季刊,由剑桥大学出版社出版,2015 年起使用现名。
Scope
- Mental health is treated as a global question, and services, law and training receive as much room in its pages as the clinical description of illness does.
- Low- and middle-income countries supply most of its material, since that is where the burden of untreated disorder is heaviest and the specialist workforce thinnest, and where a short report helps most.
- Service models get close attention, and a paper may describe how a district team is staffed, what it costs and what it manages to reach in practice.
- Task-sharing runs through much of the work, with community workers and primary care staff carrying tasks that a psychiatrist would hold elsewhere, and it asks what such arrangements cost.
- Cross-cultural psychopathology is a standing interest, so idioms of distress, local categories of illness and the reach of diagnostic manuals all come up for discussion, often with case material from several countries.
- Comparisons across countries appear often, and a study may set the treated prevalence of one disorder against figures from a neighbouring system with a similar income level.
- Policy and legislation are within scope, and mental health law, rights-based reform and the financing of care are all treated as fit subjects rather than as background.
- Workforce questions get steady coverage, from the training of psychiatrists and nurses to the migration of clinicians out of the countries that trained them, which leaves gaps behind.
- Stigma and suicide prevention belong to the public health side, and the journal carries accounts of campaigns, registers and national strategies that have been tried, together with what they measured.
- Humanitarian settings are covered as well, and papers follow mental health work in conflict, displacement and the aftermath of disaster, where ordinary services have collapsed and outside agencies step in.
- Child and adolescent mental health has its own place, and a paper may weigh a school programme against the resources a poor district can spare for it.
- Substance use and physical comorbidity are handled together with psychiatric disorder, since in most settings the three present in the same consultation, often to a clinician with no specialist training.
- Digital and remote care now appears regularly, and telepsychiatry, mobile tools and online training are examined for what they add in places short of specialists, and for what they miss.
- Brevity is a house rule, and the journal prefers a short paper that reports one finding clearly to a long one that buries it under needless detail, so authors are asked to cut.
- Readers are clinicians and planners rather than specialists in one technique, and the writing is kept plain enough for a ministry office as well as a ward.
History
- The title descends from International Psychiatry, the quarterly bulletin that the Royal College of Psychiatrists ran for members working outside the United Kingdom, and for those who asked about services abroad.
- Volumes of that bulletin ran from 2004, four issues a year, and it carried short accounts of services in countries where College members worked, usually written by the people running them.
- The last volume under the old name was the eleventh, in 2014, and the change of title came with a new pair of ISSNs registered for print and online.
- The relaunch in 2015 kept the volume count running, so the first issue under the new title was volume 12, number 1, dated February, the point at which the National Library of Medicine begins its holdings.2015 年的改版延续卷号,新名之下第一期是第 12 卷第 1 期,标为 2 月出版,美国国家医学图书馆的馆藏记录也从这一期起算。
- The renaming marked a shift in ambition, as global mental health grew into a field with its own evidence base, funding lines and journals, and the old bulletin format no longer fitted it.
- For its first four years the new journal was published from London by the College itself, and library imprints still record that arrangement as running from 2015 to 2018.
- Cambridge University Press took over the imprint in 2019, and the journal has since appeared under the Cambridge Core platform and the College's publishing agreement, which also covers its other titles.
- From 2025 the journal is online only, reached through Cambridge Core or the BJPsych Journals app, and the printed edition has been retired, which the College announced as a change of format.2025 年起该刊只出网络版,经剑桥核心或 BJPsych Journals 应用访问,纸本已经停印,学院把这次调整称为形制变更。
- Four issues a year have been the pattern throughout, and each annual volume closes at number four, so a year and a volume still coincide, as the publisher's own records show.
- Volume 19 carried the issues of 2022 and volume 22 those of 2025, and counting backwards on that four-issues-a-year rhythm puts the first volume of the line in 2004, when the bulletin started.
- The journal is fully open access, and the Journal Citation Reports record gold open access at 100 per cent of its output, so a paper is free to read from the day it appears.
- It sits in the Emerging Sources Citation Index rather than the Science Citation Index Expanded, and its Journal Impact Factor rose from 1.4 for 2024 to 1.9 for 2025, which placed it in the third quartile.
- Output is small, around twenty research and review items a year, and the citation total stands near 650 with a cited half-life of five years, which suits a field journal.
Editors
- Editorial authority runs in two layers, since the College Editor answers for the whole publishing portfolio while an editor-in-chief answers for this journal, with a board beside each post.
- That post has been held since 2023 by Gin Malhi of the University of Sydney, who is also editor-in-chief of the British Journal of Psychiatry, the College's flagship monthly.
- Day-to-day work on BJPsych International falls to its own editor-in-chief, who is supported by an editorial board and a small journal office at the College's London headquarters.
- The College states that it grants editorial freedom and independence to the editor-in-chief, and decisions on individual papers rest with the journal, not with the publisher or the College.
- Manuscripts go through single anonymous peer review, so reviewers know who wrote the paper while authors do not learn who reviewed it, which the journal's own guidance explains.
- Reviewers are chosen for their knowledge of the subject, and their reports go to the editor, who weighs them before a decision is sent to the author in writing.
- Board membership is listed on the publisher's journal pages, and the list is refreshed as appointments change, so the current composition can be checked at any time.
- The journal states that its material does not necessarily reflect the views of the editor-in-chief or of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and the wording is standard.
- Accepted articles may be selected for press release by the author's institution or by College media, and embargo rules then apply to any coverage, as elsewhere in the group.
- Submissions are screened for plagiarism before review, and the journal's ethics guidance points authors to the College's policy on research conduct, which sets out the College's expectations of authors.
- The journal takes no advertising at present, and its pages carry editorials, research and reviews without commercial slots between them, as the College notes on its list of titles.
- Authors submit through the publisher's online system, and the journal's instructions set out word limits for each article type and the format for references, together with the declarations each paper must carry.
