Biological Invasions
Biological Invasions is a peer-reviewed ecology journal carrying research on the patterns and processes of biological invasions, published by Springer in the Netherlands, founded in 1999 and now issued monthly as a hybrid open access title with no mandatory page chargesBiological Invasions(生物入侵)是一本文载外来物种入侵模式与过程的同行评议生态学期刊,由 Springer(荷兰)出版,创刊于 1999 年,现为每月一期的混合开放获取期刊,不强制收取版面费;它是入侵生物学领域最主要的学术平台之一,开放获取比例已相当可观,自创刊以来从未更名。 it is one of the principal scholarly venues in invasion biology, its open access share is already substantial, and it has never been renamed.[1]
Scope
The journal focuses on the patterns and processes of biological invasions in terrestrial, freshwater and marine including brackish ecosystems, addressing the phenomenon rather than restricting itself to a single taxon or a single environment.
- The regular article types are original research papers and synthesis review papers, which together form the bulk of the journal.
- A number of special article types are also welcome, among them Alien Floras and Faunas for systematic treatments of the alien flora and fauna of a region, and Elton Reviews which carries on the review tradition of Charles Elton, a founder of invasion biology.
- Flashpoints and Invasion Notes exist for short but information-dense field records and data reports such as new distribution records and early-warning observations.
- Scholarly papers on management and policy issues connected with conservation programmes and the control of invasions are equally within scope, and the journal will consider proposals for special issues arising from conferences or workshops on invasions.
In disciplinary terms the journal is distinctive in admitting both the fundamental mechanistic work of invasion ecology and governance-oriented applied research under one roof, while elevating detailed taxonomic work to a regular article type rather than an appendix从学科定位看,这本期刊的独特之处在于它同时容纳入侵生态学的基础机制研究与面向治理的应用研究,并把分类学层面的细致工作提升为常规内容而非附属材料。 this is also why the number of source countries has grown steadily since launch while the geographic representativeness of the editorial board has lagged behind the author distribution, a gap the journal has been examining through a self-study of board and reviewer diversity begun in 2018.
History
- From the 1980s into the 1990s: scientific and political consensus on the severity of invasions built up, with the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment examining the causes, impacts and management of invasions, and Article 8 of the Convention on Biological Diversity then obliging parties to prevent and control harmful alien species, creating the demand that led to the journal.1980 至 1990 年代: 学界与政治层面对入侵严重性的共识逐步形成,环境问题科学委员会曾专门讨论入侵的成因、影响与管理,生物多样性公约第八条随后要求缔约方防范和清除潜在有害外来物种,为该领域的建刊创造了需求。
- 1996: the first international conference on invasive species was held in Trondheim in Norway, and the following year it spawned international cooperative mechanisms such as the Global Invasive Species Programme.1996 年: 首届国际外来入侵物种会议在挪威特隆赫姆举行,翌年催生出全球外来入侵物种计划等国际合作机制。
- 1999: the inaugural issue appeared with an editorial by James T. Carlton setting out the journal as a platform for scholarly communication on invasion phenomena1999 年: 创刊号出版,James T. Carlton 撰写了创刊社论,宣告本刊作为入侵现象学术交流平台的定位;首批二十位创刊编委来自十个国家。 the twenty founding editors came from ten countries.[2]
- 2021: on the twenty-second anniversary of the journal the editors published an editorial reviewing structural change in the board and reported the results of the self-study of editorial and reviewer diversity.2021 年: 期刊出版二十二周年之际,主编团队发表社论回顾编辑队伍结构的变化,并公布关于编辑与审稿多样性的自我调查结果。
- At present the publisher labels the journal as hybrid open access with optional author-paid open access, and the journal additionally runs standing calls for papers as dedicated collections on invasions in Arctic regions, management innovation and first records.
Editors
The journal is run by three co-editors-in-chief drawn respectively from plant invasion, marine invasion and invasion management, an arrangement that is unusual among ecology journals and reflects the breadth of its subject coverage.
- Laura A. Meyerson, based at the University of Rhode Island in the United States, studies how biological invasions vary spatially and contextually using the reed as a model organism, and has been one of the main drivers of the journal's self-study of board diversity.
- Mariano Rodriguez-Cabal, based at the University of Vermont in the United States, studies how biodiversity responds to the direct and cascading effects of biological invasions and species loss.
- Evangelina Schwindt, based at the marine biology institute IBIOMAR-CONICET in Argentina, works on the patterns, processes and consequences of marine invasions in coastal ecosystems and leads the coastal ecology group there.
- Beneath the three editors-in-chief sit a number of associate editors covering marine and continental waters, bioeconomy, the mechanisms of invasion and biosecurity, with the complete list maintained on the official Springer editorial board page.
