Banaras Hindu University

Banaras Hindu University, abbreviated BHU and recorded in British documents until the mid twentieth century as Benares Hindu University, is a collegiate, central and research university in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, India, whose foundation stone was laid on the Hindu spring festival of Vasant Panchami, 4 February 1916, by the Viceroy Lord Hardinge, and which grew out of the Central Hindu College that the theosophist and Indian Home Rule leader Annie Besant had founded in 1898.

The university was the brainchild of Madan Mohan Malaviya, who announced the project at the twenty-first session of the Indian National Congress held in Benares in December 1905, published his plan in 1911 and opened the institution five years later with the backing of the maharaja of Darbhanga, Rameshwar Singh, the maharaja of Benares, Prabhu Narayan Singh, and the lawyer Sunder Lal, who became its first vice-chancellor.

Spread over a main campus of 1,370 acres on the southern edge of Varanasi near the Ganges and a south campus of more than 2,700 acres at Barkachha in Mirzapur district, and organised into six institutes, fourteen faculties and about 140 departments, BHU enrols more than 30,000 students, about 18,000 of them resident, which makes it the largest residential university in Asia and places it in the 951-1000 band of the 2027 QS World University Rankings.
