Augmentative and Alternative Communication
Augmentative and Alternative Communication is the official journal of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication, known as ISAAC, and Taylor & Francis has published it quarterly since 1985.《Augmentative and Alternative Communication》是国际增强与替代沟通学会(ISAAC)的机关刊,自 1985 年起由 Taylor & Francis 按季出版。
It is a research journal devoted to people who use or may need augmentative and alternative communication, covering assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and education, with the theory and technology that support them.
The 2025 impact factor is 2.3 with a five-year figure of 2.8, and CiteScore stands at 4.0 in the first quartile. About a third of submissions are accepted.2025 年影响因子 2.3,五年值 2.8,CiteScore 4.0,落在第一四分位。
Scope
- Developmental disability is one half of the field: children with cerebral palsy, autism, intellectual disability or a genetic syndrome that limits speech, and the systems that give them a voice.
- Acquired conditions are the other half, which is where amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, aphasia after stroke and severe traumatic brain injury enter the literature.
- Assessment is treated as a subject in its own right. Matching a person to a symbol set, a vocabulary size and an access method is a decision with a literature behind it.
- Intervention studies ask whether a device change alters what a person can do in daily life, and they are read against single-case designs as often as against group trials.
- Aided and unaided communication are both covered, so a manual sign vocabulary and a speech-generating application belong to the same conversation.
- Technology has its own share: speech-generating devices, eye-gaze access, switch scanning, symbol libraries and the vocabulary organisation that decides how fast a sentence gets built.
- Education runs through the file, from literacy instruction for students who do not speak to the classroom support that keeps an inclusive placement working.
- Communication partners get attention too. A well-chosen system fails if the adults around it answer for the user, and the journal publishes work on that failure.
- Systems development is named in the aims, which admits engineering and design work on the interface between a person's intent and a machine's output.
- Research articles and review articles are allowed 35 pages. Research notes get 25, tutorials, forum notes and case reports 20 each.
- Page limits are the formal constraint on length, so the difference between a research article and a research note is scope rather than ambition.
- International comparison has a place, since symbol sets, service models and funding rules differ by country and the choice of system is often decided by them.
- The journal sits in two subject lists at once, audiology and speech-language pathology, and rehabilitation, which is a fair description of who reads it.
History
- The first volume is dated 1985, the year ISAAC put its name to a journal of its own, and volume numbering has run without a break since.
- Williams and Wilkins printed the early volumes in Baltimore. By 2015 the imprint had moved to Abingdon, Oxford, under Taylor & Francis, where it remains.
- Volume numbering is a subtraction: take the year and remove 1984. Volume 41 covers 2025, and the third issue of 2026 falls in volume 42.
- Four issues make a volume, and the society's own page describes a quarterly schedule, so a volume takes exactly one calendar year to complete.
- MEDLINE and PubMed reach back only to volume 22, number 1, in March 2006, which leaves twenty-one founding years searchable in print alone.MEDLINE
- Five impact factors read 2.214, 3.87, 2.1, 1.6 and 2.3. The 2022 peak was nearly double the year before, and the 2024 trough was the low point of the run.
- The 2025 file credits it with 1,865 citations, 43 articles in the year and a cited half-life of 10.3 years, a long tail for a field this small.2025 年的表记下 1,865 次被引,当年 43 篇文章,被引半衰期 10.3 年,对一个这么小的领域来说,尾巴很长。
- Its percentile of 74 comes from a rehabilitation list of 175 titles rather than from a narrow specialty list.
- Gold open access covers 15.13 percent of the file, and the rest sits behind the subscription that ISAAC membership includes.
- Editorial speed is measured and published. A first decision takes 89 days on average, a first post-review decision 93, and acceptance to online publication 58.
- The abstracting services say what kind of journal it is. Linguistics Abstracts, Ergonomics Abstracts, PsycINFO, CINAHL, BIOSIS and Scopus all index it, a list no single discipline would produce.
Editors
- Rose Sevcik and MaryAnn Romski are co-editors-in-chief, both at Georgia State University, and they have run the journal as a pair rather than as a single desk.
- Stijn Deckers of Radboud University in Nijmegen serves as co-editor, which places a European hand on a title whose editors sit in Atlanta.
- Anastazia Csegeny is editorial assistant and Byron Robinson, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, serves as statistical and design consultant.
- Twenty-seven associate editors carry the subject load, from Malta and Manchester to Pretoria, São Paulo and Wellington, so the map is wider than the masthead's first two names.
- Named units on that list include Florida State, Vanderbilt, Penn State, the University of Minnesota, San Francisco State and the Bridge School in California.
- Others sit at Nationwide Children's Hospital, Cardiff Metropolitan, Massey, the University of South Florida, Oregon Health and Science University and Jönköping in Sweden.
- Review is masked, and the journal says most papers are seen by three reviewers, which for a field of 43 articles a year is a heavy load per accepted paper.
- An editor screens first and assigns the paper to an associate editor, who gathers the reports, synthesises them and makes a recommendation rather than a decision.
- The editor then decides, and the journal gives authors two to three months for a first decision, 30 days to revise and about a week of proofs.
- Proof corrections are due within 48 hours of receipt, and manuscripts run through ScholarOne with proofs handled on the CATS system.
- Membership of ISAAC includes the subscription, a model that keeps a quarterly with 43 papers a year in the hands of practitioners as well as researchers.ISAAC
